You know that now."

He didn't argue.

I told him I had been unhappy for years, even before I understood how much of our situation he had concealed.

I had been lonely in a marriage that looked fine to everyone else.

I had been ashamed of something I didn't fully understand.

I had been trying to protect him from a truth he had never trusted me enough to face with him.

The dinner hadn't created all of that.

It had made it impossible for me to keep pretending.

Martin listened without interrupting.

When I finished, he said he was sorry.

I believed that he felt regret.

I still couldn't tell whether he understood the full cost.

Perhaps that was something only time could show.

Before leaving for work, he asked whether I wanted to have dinner together that evening.

I agreed.

Then I took my bag and went out.

At work, I found myself thinking about the question I had asked him.

What did his promises mean in practice?

I had spent years listening to explanations that sounded reasonable in isolation.

Martin was embarrassed.

Martin was frightened.

Martin needed time.

Each statement contained something I could understand.

Together, they had become a wall between us.

I no longer wanted to judge our future by how convincingly he described his feelings.

I wanted to see whether his behavior changed when honesty became uncomfortable.

That evening, we ate at the kitchen table.

Martin had prepared a simple meal.

We talked about work for a while, then about the medical appointments and the information the doctor had given us.

He didn't become defensive when I asked a question.

He didn't suggest that I was dwelling on the past.

For once, we were able to discuss the subject without my having to reassure him that I wasn't blaming him for a medical condition.

That mattered.

But the conversation eventually returned to Clara.

Martin admitted that he had allowed the situation to continue because he had not wanted to confront the consequences of his choices.

He had tried to maintain the life he had built at home while presenting another version of himself elsewhere.

He said he had convinced himself that he could keep the parts separate.

I looked at him.

"And what happens when the people in those separate parts meet?"

He lowered his eyes.

"They already have."

I thought about the charity dinner.

The people from our company had watched him present Clara's children as his own.

I had watched too.

There had been no private boundary between those lives that evening.

He had brought them into the same room and expected me to sit quietly while everyone else celebrated.

I asked him what he intended to do now.

He said he needed to stop pretending that the situation could continue without consequences.

I waited for him to explain what he meant.

He didn't offer a complete plan.

I didn't demand that he produce one before dinner ended.

Instead, I told him that whatever he chose to do, he needed to make the choice honestly.

I could not tell him what he felt.

I could not decide which relationships mattered most to him.

And I could not promise to remain his wife while he worked out how to live with the consequences of his decisions.

He nodded slowly.

For once, I didn't feel responsible for making him comfortable with what I had said.

After dinner, I washed the plates.

Martin dried them.

The ordinary task reminded me of the years we had spent together, the small habits that had made our life familiar.

I didn't want to lose those memories.

But I no longer wanted familiarity to be the only reason I stayed.

When we finished, I put the last plate away and turned off the kitchen light.

I had spent five years hoping Martin would become ready to tell me the truth.

Now the truth was out in the open between us.

The question was no longer whether he could say it.

It was whether he could live with it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: I Had Once Believed the Right Apology Could Restore Our Marriage, Until I Saw That Martin Still Had to Choose What Kind of Man He Wanted to Be

The morning after our conversation, I woke before Martin.
