he asked.

I stopped near the door.

I could have reassured him.

I could have said we were working on things and that I believed we would find a way forward.

Instead, I answered honestly.

"We're trying to understand whether we can be."

He looked down at his plate.

I left before I could soften the answer.

The drive to work felt longer than usual.

I kept thinking about his question.

He wanted to know whether we were all right.

I wanted to know whether he understood what had happened.

Those were different questions.

One asked for comfort.

The other required him to face something uncomfortable.

I had spent five years answering the first whenever I should have been asking the second.

That afternoon, my friend called to ask how I was doing.

I told her Martin and I had spoken again.

She asked whether anything had changed.

I thought about the conversation at the kitchen table.

"He says he wants to make things better."

"And do you believe him?"

I looked out the office window.

"I believe he wants things to be better."

She waited.

"I'm not sure he understands what that will take."

She said that sounded reasonable.

Then she asked what I wanted.

I had become so accustomed to discussing Martin's feelings that the question caught me off guard.

I thought about having a child.

I thought about the future I had imagined when I married him.

I thought about the years I had spent trying to be patient enough, understanding enough, and quiet enough to make our life work.

"I want a marriage where I don't have to be afraid of asking a question," I said.

My friend didn't offer advice.

She simply told me I deserved to be heard.

After we hung up, I sat at my desk for a while.

The conversation had not solved anything.

But I had said what I wanted without first considering whether Martin would find it difficult to hear.

That felt important.

When I returned home, Martin was already there.

He had prepared dinner.

The table was set for two, and he had placed the appointment papers in a neat pile near the kitchen counter.

I stopped when I saw them.

"Why are those out?"

He turned from the stove.

"I thought we should look at them together."

I approached the counter.

The newer appointment card lay on top of the other papers.

The older one was beside it.

For a moment, I felt as though I were looking at two separate versions of our marriage.

The first had been the day he left me alone with the doctor's explanation.

The second had been the day he finally sat beside me and listened.

Martin pulled out a chair.

"I want to understand what happens next."

I sat down.

We reviewed the information slowly.

We discussed the medical concerns, the further questions that could be asked, and the uncertainty that remained.

He admitted that he had avoided thinking about the subject because every reminder made him feel ashamed.

I told him I understood that shame could be difficult to live with.

Then I reminded him that his shame hadn't given him the right to make me responsible for it.

He nodded.

This time, he didn't argue.

We spent nearly an hour discussing the practical information.

There were no dramatic revelations.

No sudden solution.

Just two people looking at the same papers and trying to understand what they meant.

When we finished, Martin gathered the pages and placed them in the envelope.

He looked at me.

"I should have done this with you five years ago."

I didn't answer immediately.

"Yes," I said.

He lowered his eyes.

I wanted to tell him that it was all right.

I wanted to make the admission easier for him.

But it wasn't all right.

And pretending otherwise would have made his apology less meaningful, not more.

We ate dinner afterward.

The food had cooled while we talked, but neither of us complained.

Martin asked whether I thought we should seek help with the problems in our marriage.

I said I was willing to consider it.

He nodded.

For the first time in a long while, the suggestion didn't feel like another way to postpone the truth.

It felt like a possible step toward facing it.

Still, I didn't mistake the conversation for a solution.

Martin had finally looked at the medical information.

He had finally admitted that he had left me alone when I needed him.

But the question of Clara remained.

So did the charity dinner.

So did the years of explanations he had given other people.

I could not build a future on the parts of the story he found easiest to tell.

After dinner, I carried the plates to the sink.

Martin stood beside me and began drying them.

We worked quietly.

For a few minutes, the familiarity of the task almost comforted me.

Then I remembered how many ordinary evenings we had spent together without discussing the one thing that mattered.

I placed a plate in the cupboard.

"Martin?"

He looked at me.

"I still need you to tell me the truth about Clara."

His hands stopped moving.

The kitchen became quiet.

He folded the dish towel and placed it on the counter.

"I know."

I waited.

He didn't begin explaining.

Instead, he said he needed some time to work out how to talk about it.

I felt the old disappointment rise.

Then I let it pass without trying to make it easier for him.

"Take the time you need," I said. "But I can't keep waiting forever."

He nodded.

I finished putting away the dishes.

Later, I went upstairs and opened the drawer beside my bed.

The envelope containing the appointment cards was still there.

I placed it beside the notebook where I had written my questions.

Then I closed the drawer.

I wasn't waiting for the papers to tell me what to do.

I already knew what I needed.

Honesty.

Not the kind that arrived only after a doctor asked a question.

Not the kind that appeared when a secret became too difficult to maintain.

The kind that allowed two people to face a difficult truth before one of them had to discover it alone.

I had finally said that clearly.

Now I needed to see whether Martin could live by it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Had Waited Five Years for Martin to Admit What the Doctor Told Him, but the Question About Clara Required a Different Kind of Courage

The morning after our conversation, Martin asked whether I wanted breakfast.
