Properly."

He put down the paper.

"All right."

I nodded and left him to his work.

The answer was simple.

It didn't promise anything.

Still, I appreciated that he hadn't immediately asked me to postpone the conversation.

That evening, we sat at the kitchen table.

The vase of roses was gone.

The flowers had wilted, and I had thrown them away a few days earlier.

The small dish near the door held our keys.

Everything looked ordinary.

I had learned not to trust appearances.

Martin sat opposite me.

I placed my hands on the table.

"I need to understand what you want from this marriage."

He looked at me for a long moment.

"I want us to stay together."

"Why?"

He seemed surprised by the question.

"Because I love you."

I had wanted to hear those words many times during the previous weeks.

Now I found myself asking what they meant.

"I believe you care about me," I said. "But I don't know whether you understand what being married to me requires."

He looked down.

I explained that love couldn't mean asking me to protect him from every uncomfortable truth.

It couldn't mean allowing people to misunderstand me because correcting them would embarrass him.

It couldn't mean deciding what I could handle without asking me.

Martin listened.

I wasn't sure he agreed with every word.

But he didn't interrupt.

I told him I had wanted children with him.

I had wanted us to face the medical problem together, whatever the outcome.

I had wanted to be able to tell people that we were dealing with something difficult without feeling that I was betraying him.

Instead, I had spent years trying to protect a man who had made me feel responsible for his condition.

I paused.

"I don't know how to go back to the way things were."

He rubbed his hands together.

"I don't want things to go back to the way they were either."

I looked at him.

For a moment, I felt hope.

Then I remembered how often we had mistaken the end of a difficult conversation for the beginning of a solution.

"What do you want to change?" I asked.

He took a long breath.

He said he wanted us to stop hurting each other.

He wanted to rebuild trust.

He wanted to find a way to move forward without letting the past control everything.

Those were reasonable things to want.

But they were still broad enough to avoid the choices that had brought us there.

I asked him what he was willing to do differently.

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he said he would stop pretending the fertility problem belonged to me.

He said he would correct the things he had told people when it was appropriate to do so.

He said he would answer my questions honestly.

I listened.

I wanted to believe him.

But I needed him to understand that he couldn't make promises simply to end the conversation.

"If you tell me something," I said, "I need to know you're telling me because it's true, not because you think it's what I want to hear."

He nodded.

"I understand."

I looked at him.

"Do you?"

He took a breath.

"I know I've given you reasons not to trust me."

It was the closest he had come to acknowledging the full problem without defending himself.

I felt my shoulders loosen slightly.

Not because everything had been repaired.

Because he had finally stopped asking me to pretend that nothing needed repairing.

We sat together for a while.

Neither of us spoke.

Then Martin asked whether I thought we could have a future together.

I looked at the table.

The wood had a small mark near the edge, a scratch I had noticed years earlier and never bothered to repair.

I ran my finger over it.

"I don't know yet."

He nodded slowly.

I could see the disappointment in his face.

I also saw that he understood I wasn't going to offer him certainty simply because he was afraid of losing me.

I had lived too long with uncertainty that I wasn't allowed to discuss.

I wasn't going to replace it with promises I couldn't keep.

Later that night, I took the appointment cards from my drawer.

I held them together for a moment.

The old card reminded me of the woman who had sat alone in the clinic, waiting for her husband to return.

The new one reminded me of the day he finally had to listen.

I placed them in a small envelope.

Then I put the envelope back in the drawer.

I wasn't keeping it as a weapon.

I wasn't keeping it because I wanted to punish Martin.

I was keeping it because those events had happened, and I no longer wanted to erase them from my own memory simply to make our marriage easier to live with.

Before going to bed, I stood in the bathroom and looked at my reflection.

I thought about the charity dinner.

I thought about the children in Martin's arms.

I thought about Clara standing beside him while the room applauded.

I still didn't know everything about their relationship.

I couldn't honestly claim to understand what had happened between them or what Martin believed he was building with her.

But I knew I could not repair my marriage by ignoring what I had seen.

The truth about his fertility was one truth.

The truth about his choices was another.

I had spent five years trying to make the first one easier for him to bear.

Now I needed to see whether he was willing to face the second.

I turned off the bathroom light.

Martin was already in bed.

I slipped beneath the covers and lay on my side, facing away from him.

He didn't reach for me.

I didn't reach for him.

For the first time, I didn't treat that distance as something I had to close before morning.

We had both spoken.

We had both admitted that our marriage had changed.

But understanding the damage was not the same as repairing it.

I would have to see what came next.

And this time, I would not make the decision for both of us.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: Martin Had Finally Promised to Tell Me the Truth, but I Was Beginning to Understand That Promises Meant Little Without Something Real Behind Them

I had imagined that knowing the truth would bring relief.
