10 – Martin Wanted Our Marriage to Return to Normal, but He Still Had Not Explained Why Clara and Her Children Had Become Part of His Life

The first time Martin mentioned Clara after the charity dinner, he did it as though her name were an ordinary part of a workday.

We were eating dinner.

He told me that a meeting had been moved and that he needed to review some documents before the following morning.

Then he mentioned that Clara had prepared the paperwork.

I continued eating.

He looked at me.

"She's been handling a lot lately."

I put down my fork.

"Is that so?"

"Work has been busy."

I nodded.

I wasn't going to interrogate him about a secretary doing her job.

But I wasn't going to pretend I hadn't seen what happened at the dinner either.

Martin seemed to expect another question.

When I didn't ask one, he continued talking about work.

I listened politely.

The conversation ended without either of us saying anything important.

Later, I stood at the kitchen sink and washed our plates.

Martin came in and leaned against the counter.

"You haven't asked me about Clara."

I turned off the tap.

"What do you want me to ask?"

He looked uncomfortable.

"I don't know."

I dried my hands.

"Then perhaps you should tell me what you think I need to know."

He stared at the floor.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then he said he knew the dinner had hurt me.

I waited.

He said he hadn't intended to make me feel excluded.

He said the situation with Clara and the children was complicated.

That word again.

Complicated.

It had become a place where he could put anything he didn't want to explain.

I asked him what he meant.

He said he didn't want to discuss it while we were both upset.

I almost laughed.

We had spent five years avoiding a discussion because he was upset.

Now we were avoiding another because I might be.

I looked at him carefully.

"I can't keep waiting for the right time, Martin."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I know."

"Do you?"

He didn't answer.

I went upstairs.

I wasn't trying to end the conversation.

I was trying to stop it from becoming another evening in which he said just enough to make me wait and not enough to tell me anything.

That night, I slept badly.

I kept remembering the charity dinner.

The toddler's small hand tangled in Clara's hair.

The newborn resting against Martin.

The applause when he announced that his family had grown.

I had been so focused on the humiliation of sitting there that I hadn't fully considered what the scene meant.

Martin had not merely told people that I couldn't have children.

He had presented a different family in public while leaving me to occupy the role he had assigned me.

I didn't know every detail of his relationship with Clara.

I didn't know when it had begun or what promises had been made.

I couldn't fill those gaps with guesses.

But I knew that whatever was happening had become important enough for him to share it with our colleagues.

And he still hadn't explained it to his wife.

The next morning, I woke before the alarm.

Martin was still asleep.

I got dressed quietly and went downstairs.

I made coffee and sat at the kitchen table.

The house was peaceful.

I used to find comfort in those early hours.

I would plan the day, think about meals, and remember the small things Martin might need.

Now I found myself thinking about a different question.

What would I do if he never gave me a complete explanation?

I had built so much of my life around the belief that eventually he would tell me the truth.

But what if he continued to offer fragments?

What if every answer led to another delay?

What if I spent another five years waiting for him to become the man I thought I had married?

I didn't want to decide the future of our marriage before I understood what had happened.

But I also didn't want to make understanding dependent on his willingness to speak.

When Martin came downstairs, I was still at the table.

He looked surprised to see me sitting there without a book or a list of things to do.

"You're up early."

"I couldn't sleep."

He poured coffee.

Then he sat opposite me.

I looked at him.

"I need you to understand something."

He waited.

"I don't expect you to have every answer about the medical situation. I know there are things we can't control."

He nodded.

"But I need you to be honest about the things you can control."

His expression tightened slightly.

I continued.

"You can tell me what happened with Clara. You can tell me what you told people. You can tell me what you want from this marriage."

I paused.

"Those are choices."

Martin stared into his cup.

"I know."

I wanted to believe him.

But I had heard those words before.

So I told him I wasn't going to keep asking the same questions.

If he wanted to repair our marriage, he needed to stop treating honesty as something I had to earn through patience.

He sat quietly.

Then he asked whether I was threatening to leave.

I looked at him.

"No. I'm telling you that I can't live like this indefinitely."

He looked away.

For the first time, I saw that my refusal to make everything comfortable had left him without the usual way out.

I didn't feel triumphant.

I felt sad.

I had never wanted to become the person who set conditions on every conversation.

I had wanted a husband who would speak to me because he trusted me.

But trust couldn't survive on one person's effort alone.

That evening, Martin came home with flowers.

He placed them on the kitchen table.

They were pale roses, the kind he had bought for me on anniversaries.

I looked at them.

"They're beautiful," I said.

He seemed relieved.

He asked whether we could have dinner together and try to put the past few days behind us.

I touched one of the petals.

"Martin, flowers aren't an explanation."

His face fell.

"I wasn't trying to replace a conversation."

"Then don't ask me to forget the conversation we haven't had."

He stood beside the table, looking at the flowers.

I felt a familiar ache.

I wanted to make the moment easier for him.

I wanted to tell him that I appreciated the gesture and that we could discuss everything another day.

But another day had become five years.

I couldn't offer him that promise again.

He eventually took his coat upstairs.

I put the flowers in a vase.

I wasn't angry at the roses.

They were only flowers.

They couldn't repair a marriage, but they didn't need to be punished for failing.

I placed the vase near the kitchen window.

The next morning, sunlight fell across the petals.

I stood there for a moment before leaving for work.

Then I picked up my bag and went out the door.

I had begun to understand that I could accept a kind gesture without accepting it as an answer.

That distinction mattered.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Had Protected Martin From Questions for Five Years, Until I Realized That My Silence Had Also Kept Me From Asking the Questions I Deserved to Ask

The first time Martin mentioned Clara after the charity dinner, he did it as though her name were an ordinary part of a workday.
