9 – I Stopped Asking Martin to Explain Himself, and That Was When I Began to See How Much of My Life I Had Spent Making Excuses for Him

For several days after our walk, I tried to live without expecting anything from Martin.

I didn't mean that I had stopped caring.

I meant that I stopped waiting for every ordinary moment to turn into the conversation that might save our marriage.

If he came home late, I continued with whatever I was doing.

If he seemed troubled, I didn't immediately ask what was wrong.

If he wanted to talk, I listened.

It was a small change, but it made our house feel different.

There was more silence than before.

The difference was that I no longer rushed to fill it.

One morning, I was standing at the kitchen counter when Martin came downstairs.

He was already dressed for work.

His tie hung loosely around his collar, and he carried his phone in one hand.

He looked at the coffee I had made.

"Is there any left?"

I pointed toward the pot.

He poured himself a cup and sat at the table.

I continued preparing breakfast.

For years, I would have asked about his schedule or reminded him about something he needed to take with him.

That morning, I didn't.

He noticed.

"You've been quiet lately."

I put the bread on a plate.

"I've been thinking."

"About us?"

"Yes."

He waited for me to say more.

I didn't.

Eventually, he looked at his phone again.

I felt an old urge to explain myself.

I wanted to reassure him that I wasn't trying to punish him.

I wanted to tell him that I still cared and that I didn't know what would happen to our marriage.

But those things were already true.

I didn't need to repeat them every morning.

Martin finished his coffee and left.

I watched him close the front door.

Then I sat down at the table and ate breakfast by myself.

It wasn't a dramatic moment.

Nobody cried.

Nobody slammed a door.

But I felt something I hadn't felt in years.

Space.

A little room in which my thoughts could exist without immediately becoming a problem I needed to solve.

Later that week, I met a friend for lunch.

We had known each other for years, and she had asked several times how I was doing.

I had always given her the same answer.

Fine.

Busy.

Nothing much happening.

That afternoon, she looked at me across the table and asked whether I was really all right.

I stirred my drink.

For a moment, I considered giving her the familiar answer.

Then I decided I was tired of protecting the appearance of my marriage in every conversation.

"Things have been difficult with Martin."

She put down her fork.

"What's happened?"

I told her that we had been struggling for a long time.

I didn't describe every private detail.

I didn't need to.

I explained that Martin had allowed people to believe I was the reason we hadn't had children, even though the medical concerns had involved him.

I told her that I had known for five years and had never found the courage to challenge the story.

She listened without interrupting.

When I finished, she sat quietly for a moment.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

I looked down at the table.

"I thought it was his secret."

She didn't argue with me.

She simply asked whether I had considered what keeping it had done to me.

I couldn't answer immediately.

I had spent so long thinking about Martin's embarrassment that I had never seriously considered my own.

I had worried about how people would look at him.

I had worried about whether he could bear their questions.

I had worried that telling the truth would damage his reputation.

Meanwhile, I had accepted the embarrassment of being treated as a woman who couldn't give her husband a family.

I had allowed people to pity me for something they didn't understand.

And I had done it because I thought loyalty required silence.

My friend reached across the table and touched my hand.

"You don't have to keep carrying it alone."

I nodded.

I wanted to believe her.

But years of silence had become a habit, and habits didn't disappear because someone offered kindness.

When we said goodbye, I sat in my car for several minutes before starting the engine.

I thought about the appointment card in my bedside drawer.

I thought about the doctor asking Martin to explain what he understood.

I thought about how different I had felt after finally saying that we had never properly discussed the truth.

I hadn't solved anything.

But I had stopped pretending that the truth was too dangerous to speak aloud.

That evening, Martin asked how my day had gone.

I told him I had met my friend for lunch.

He asked what we had discussed.

I looked at him.

"Life."

He gave me a searching look.

"Did you talk about us?"

"Some of it."

His expression changed.

I knew what he was thinking.

He had spent years deciding which people could know the truth and which people should hear a different version.

Now he was discovering that he couldn't control every conversation I had.

"Did you tell her about the medical situation?"

"Yes."

He put his keys on the counter.

For a moment, I thought he might become angry.

Instead, he asked why I had done it.

"Because I needed someone to talk to."

"You could have talked to me."

I looked at him.

"I tried."

He didn't answer.

I could see him searching for a response that might return us to familiar ground.

I didn't help him find one.

After a while, he picked up his keys and went upstairs.

I remained in the kitchen.

The coffee pot was still on the counter.

I rinsed it and set it beside the sink to dry.

Then I turned off the light.

For once, I didn't spend the evening wondering how to make Martin feel better about what I had said.

I wondered what it would feel like to stop being ashamed of something that had never been mine to hide.

I didn't have an answer yet.

But the question belonged to me.

Click
