7 – The More I Remembered the Charity Dinner, the Harder It Became to Believe Martin Had Simply Made One Terrible Mistake

I had spent years telling myself that Martin's behavior came from fear.

It was a generous explanation.

It allowed me to believe that the man I loved had made one bad decision and then become trapped by it.

But the charity dinner had made that explanation harder to accept.

Martin hadn't simply failed to correct a misunderstanding.

He had stood in front of our colleagues and presented Clara's children as his own.

He had spoken proudly.

He had accepted congratulations.

He had allowed people to celebrate a family that I had been told could never exist because of me.

I kept returning to that image.

Martin beneath the lights.

Clara beside him.

The baby resting against his chest.

My hands folded beneath the table.

There were moments when I wished I could forget the scene.

Then I reminded myself that forgetting would only make it easier to return to the life I had been living.

I needed to remember what I had seen.

Not because I wanted to suffer.

Because I didn't want to keep explaining away my own pain.

One afternoon, I was putting clean dishes away when Martin came into the kitchen.

He asked whether I wanted to go out for dinner that weekend.

It was the kind of invitation he used to make when we had been busy and needed time together.

I looked at him.

"Why?"

He seemed surprised.

"Because we haven't gone out in a while."

I dried a plate with the dish towel.

"Is that the only reason?"

He sighed.

"I thought it might be good for us."

I placed the plate in the cupboard.

"Then let's talk about what's happening between us."

He leaned against the counter.

"We've already talked."

"We've talked about the appointment."

"And about the dinner."

"Not enough."

His expression tightened.

I could see the conversation becoming difficult for him before he said a word.

He told me he couldn't keep discussing the same things.

He said he knew he had made mistakes.

He said he wanted to move forward.

I asked him what moving forward meant.

He didn't have an answer.

That was the problem.

He wanted the discomfort to end without having to decide what honesty would require from him.

I told him I couldn't return to normal simply because he was tired of talking about what had happened.

He looked away.

"I don't know what you want me to say."

I believed him.

He had spent so long avoiding the truth that he no longer knew how to speak about it without trying to escape the consequences.

"I want you to stop telling me what you think will make me feel better," I said. "I want you to tell me what is true."

He stood silently for a moment.

Then he left the kitchen.

I remained by the counter, holding the dish towel.

My hands were trembling.

I set the towel down and waited until they steadied.

I had always thought that being direct would make me feel stronger.

Instead, it made me feel exposed.

There was no comfortable explanation left for me to hide behind.

That evening, Martin ate dinner in his study.

I ate at the kitchen table.

The house was quiet except for the refrigerator and the occasional sound of a car passing outside.

I thought about the years before the fertility appointment.

Martin and I had been happy in many ways.

We had traveled together.

We had celebrated promotions.

We had made plans for the future.

We had laughed at small things that nobody else would have understood.

I didn't want to erase those memories.

I didn't want to pretend that every good moment had been false.

But I was beginning to understand that love and dishonesty could exist in the same marriage.

The good memories didn't cancel out what he had done.

And what he had done didn't mean I had imagined every good thing.

That was harder to accept than a simple story in which one person was entirely good and the other entirely bad.

Martin was not a stranger.

He was the man whose habits I knew better than my own.

I knew how he liked his coffee.

I knew he read the last page of a report before the first when he was short on time.

I knew he became quiet when he was worried about work.

I had once considered those details evidence that I understood him.

Now I wondered how much of him I had never been allowed to see.

The following week, we attended a small gathering with people from his company.

I considered staying home.

Then I decided I didn't want to spend the rest of my life avoiding rooms where people might ask questions.

Martin drove us there.

During the evening, someone mentioned the charity dinner.

They praised Martin for sharing such a happy moment with everyone.

He thanked them.

I watched his face.

He didn't look at me.

The conversation moved on, but the words stayed with me.

Happy moment.

I wondered what Clara had thought while he stood beside her.

I wondered what the people who knew about their relationship understood that I didn't.

I didn't have answers.

I wasn't going to invent them simply because I was hurt.

When we returned home, I removed my coat and hung it in the closet.

Martin asked whether I was upset.

I told him I was thinking.

"About the dinner?"

"About a lot of things."

He nodded.

For once, he didn't insist that I explain myself.

I went upstairs and sat at the dresser.

The little dish holding my earrings was where I had left it.

I took off my wedding ring and placed it beside them.

I hadn't planned to remove it.

I simply needed to look at my hand without it for a moment.

The pale line beneath the band seemed more noticeable than it had before.

I turned the ring over in the dish.

I wasn't ready to decide what it meant.

I put it back on.

Then I looked at myself in the mirror.

I looked tired.

Not broken.

Not helpless.

Just tired of living inside a story I had never chosen.

The next morning, I woke before Martin.

I went downstairs and made coffee.

The kitchen window was dark, and the reflection of the room appeared in the glass.

I placed two cups on the counter out of habit.

Then I put one back in the cupboard.

It was such a small decision that I almost smiled at myself.

I didn't need to prepare for a conversation that hadn't happened.

I didn't need to anticipate what Martin might want.

I could simply make my own coffee.

When he came downstairs, he noticed the empty place on the counter.

He didn't comment.

He poured himself a cup and sat at the table.

For several minutes, we drank in silence.

Then he said he had been thinking about the future.

I looked at him.

He said he knew things couldn't continue as they were.

He said we needed to be honest about what we wanted from the marriage.

I waited for him to continue.

He looked at his coffee.

"I don't know if I can give you the life you wanted."

I felt the words land between us.

For years, he had told me that I couldn't give him a child.

Now, for the first time, he had acknowledged that the problem might not be mine to carry.

I wanted to ask whether he meant the medical issue or everything else.

I wanted to know whether he understood how much more had been lost than the possibility of having children.

But he was looking at me, waiting for an answer.

I took a slow breath.

"I don't know what life I want anymore," I said.

And that was the first honest thing I had been able to tell him in a long time.
