I said.

He nodded slowly.

"I knew you were upset."

"Then you knew something was wrong."

He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees.

"I didn't know how to fix it."

I wanted to ask why he had assumed the problem was his to fix by himself.

Instead, I asked whether he had ever considered telling the truth.

He didn't answer immediately.

Then he admitted that he had thought about it.

He said he had imagined telling our families and friends that he might not be able to father children.

He pictured the questions.

He pictured the looks.

He imagined people trying to reassure him while secretly judging him.

He said he couldn't stand it.

I understood the fear.

I had experienced my own version of it.

I had imagined telling people that I was struggling with infertility, only to hear advice I hadn't requested or explanations that made me feel responsible.

The difference was that I hadn't tried to make Martin carry the blame for what I feared.

I had carried my own uncertainty.

He had handed his to me.

"I didn't ask you to tell everyone," I said.

He looked at me.

"I only asked you to be honest with me."

He lowered his head.

For a moment, I thought he might apologize.

Instead, he said he had been trying to protect our marriage.

I almost told him that he had protected its appearance.

He had protected the version of himself that he wanted other people to see.

He had protected the comfortable arrangement in which I stayed quiet and he remained beyond question.

But I didn't say those things.

He needed to understand them for himself.

I was tired of doing all the work of making his choices clear to him.

That night, I went to bed before he did.

I lay beneath the covers and listened to him move around downstairs.

A cupboard opened.

Water ran briefly.

Then the house became quiet.

I wondered whether we had ever been as close as I had believed.

I remembered our wedding day.

I remembered Martin holding my hand while we promised to remain together through difficult times.

At the time, those promises had seemed simple.

We would face problems as a couple.

We would tell each other the truth.

We would make decisions together.

I hadn't imagined that one day I would have to ask my husband to include me in a truth about our own marriage.

The next morning, I found him in the kitchen making coffee.

He asked whether I wanted some.

I said yes.

He poured it into my favorite cup and placed it beside me.

Then he stood near the counter.

"I think we should talk about what happens next."

I wrapped both hands around the cup.

"What do you think should happen?"

He said we needed time.

He said we shouldn't make decisions while emotions were high.

He said the medical situation was complicated and that we should focus on understanding it before deciding what it meant for our future.

Some of that made sense.

I wasn't asking him to produce a solution overnight.

I wasn't demanding that he promise something no doctor could guarantee.

I wanted him to stop using uncertainty as a reason to avoid honesty.

"We can take time," I said. "But I won't keep pretending."

He nodded.

I couldn't tell whether he understood.

For the first time, I didn't try to explain it again.

Later that week, I saw Clara's name on his phone.

It appeared while he was sitting at the table, reading through a message before a meeting.

He turned the screen away when he noticed me looking.

The movement was quick.

It might have meant nothing.

I told myself that I had no reason to draw conclusions from a name on a screen.

Clara worked for him.

They communicated about business.

That was all I knew.

Still, the sight of her name stayed with me.

At the charity dinner, she had stood beside Martin as though their place together required no explanation.

He had held her newborn.

He had smiled at the toddler.

He had spoken about his growing family.

I couldn't make those memories fit the explanation he had given me about protecting our marriage.

But I didn't ask him about Clara.

Not that day.

I wasn't ready to have a conversation in which every answer might lead to another question.

I needed to understand the truth I already had before I could face the things I didn't.

A few days later, I took the old appointment card from my drawer.

I unfolded it on the bed.

The notes were brief.

I had written down the doctor's concerns, the need for further evaluation, and a few questions I wanted to ask.

At the bottom, in smaller handwriting, I had written that Martin had left before the discussion was finished.

I stared at that sentence.

It was the only part of the card that wasn't medical information.

It was the beginning of my private version of the story.

I had kept it because I didn't want to forget what happened.

But I had also kept it because I had never allowed myself to decide what it meant.

I had been waiting for Martin to tell me.

Now I understood that I could acknowledge what had happened without his permission.

He had left.

I had stayed.

He had refused to talk.

I had waited.

He had allowed people to believe that I was the reason we had no children.

I had remained silent.

Those were the facts.

I folded the card and returned it to the drawer.

Then I went downstairs.

Martin was in his study, speaking on the phone.

I heard him say he would handle something the following morning.

His voice sounded ordinary.

I stood outside the door for a moment.

Once, I would have waited until he finished and asked whether he wanted tea.

Once, I would have tried to make the evening comfortable before bed.

Instead, I walked away.

I wasn't trying to punish him.

I was beginning to understand that his discomfort was not always mine to manage.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: The More I Remembered the Charity Dinner, the Harder It Became to Believe Martin Had Simply Made One Terrible Mistake

The days after the appointment were quiet.
