14 – I Began to See How Easily a Mother’s Good Intentions Could Become Another Reason for Her Daughter to Keep Quiet

There was a time when I thought I understood Lauren because I had raised her.

I knew what she liked.

I knew the expressions she made when she was tired.

I knew how she sounded when she was trying to hide a laugh.

I had watched her grow from a little girl into a woman with children of her own.

It was easy to believe that knowing those things meant I understood what she needed.

But people change.

The relationship between a mother and an adult daughter changes, too.

Lauren had a family now.

She had responsibilities I couldn't see from my own house.

She had worries that did not always fit neatly into a conversation.

And she had learned ways of managing those worries that I had not taken the time to understand.

I had been proud of how capable she was.

I still was.

But I was beginning to question how often I had praised her for needing so little.

When Lauren was younger, I liked that she could occupy herself.

She didn't demand attention every minute.

She tried to solve problems before asking someone else to solve them.

Those qualities had made life easier in many ways.

They had also made it easy for me to assume she would always be all right.

I had not intended to teach her that asking for help was a weakness.

But intentions were not the only thing that mattered.

The way a person responded to a request could teach something, even when no lesson was meant.

If I praised Lauren for being strong every time she struggled, she might have learned that strength was what I valued most.

If I told her not to worry every time she described a problem, she might have learned that worry was something she should hide.

If I accepted her first reassurance without asking another question, she might have learned that the easiest way to end a difficult conversation was to say she was fine.

I couldn't know whether those things had shaped her exactly that way.

I could only see how easily they might have.

And I had to admit that my habits had played a part.

That was not a comfortable thought.

It would have been easier to blame the demands of motherhood, the strain of caring for twins, or Cole's decision to leave.

Those things had all mattered.

But they didn't explain why I had been so ready to accept a short message instead of returning a call.

That part belonged to me.

I had wanted to believe Lauren was doing well.

I had wanted to believe that her marriage provided the support she needed.

I had wanted to believe that if something were truly wrong, she would tell me clearly.

Those beliefs were comforting.

They were also convenient.

They allowed me to avoid asking questions that might have required more of me.

I had not wanted to interfere in her marriage.

I had not wanted to become the parent who always had an opinion.

But there was a point at which restraint became neglect.

I had come too close to that point.

The thought made me uncomfortable, so I tried to turn it into something useful.

What could I do differently?

I could stop assuming that a quiet person had nothing to say.

I could stop treating a calm voice as proof that a situation was manageable.

I could stop congratulating someone for carrying a burden without asking whether the burden could be shared.

And I could remember that help did not have to be forced on someone to be offered.

Lauren could say no.

She could decide that she wanted to handle something herself.

She could choose not to discuss a private matter.

My responsibility was not to make her accept my help.

It was to make sure she knew she could ask for it.

That was a more respectful way to think about independence.

I wanted her to have control over her own life without feeling abandoned inside it.

I wanted her to know that I trusted her judgment while still caring about what she was experiencing.

Those things could exist together.

I had treated them as opposites for too long.

The next time we spoke, I tried to remember that.

She told me something ordinary about the twins.

I listened while she described their day.

I asked a question.

Then another.

Not because I wanted to investigate her life, but because I wanted to understand what she was telling me.

At one point, she paused.

"You're asking a lot of questions today."

I felt myself tense.

For a moment, I wondered whether I had gone too far.

"I hope I'm not bothering you," I said.

She laughed softly.

"No, Mom. It's just different."

Different.

I thought about that word after we finished talking.

I hadn't realized how noticeable a little attention could be.

That made me sad.

It also gave me a reason to keep going.

I didn't need to transform every conversation into something profound.

I didn't need to ask Lauren to explain her feelings every time we spoke.

I only needed to show that I was listening.

And if she told me something difficult, I needed to let it matter.

Christmas Eve had taught me that my good intentions could not substitute for that effort.

I loved my daughter.

I had always loved her.

But I wanted my love to be something she could experience when she needed it, not just something I could point to afterward.

That was the work ahead of me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: The Kitchen Counter Still Reminded Me of the Night I Missed Lauren’s Call, but I Was Learning Not to Let Regret Be the End of the Story

There was a time when I thought I understood Lauren because I had raised her.
