she said.

I waited.

"Not enough, really."

I could hear the difference between the two answers.

The first had been an attempt to make the situation sound manageable.

The second was closer to what she actually felt.

I didn't make a speech about it.

I asked whether there was something I could do to help.

She considered the question.

"I'm not sure yet."

"That's all right."

I meant it.

She didn't need to produce a plan before she could accept support.

We talked a little longer.

The conversation wasn't dramatic.

Nothing was suddenly solved.

But I felt that I had done something differently.

I had let her answer honestly without immediately trying to make the problem smaller.

That mattered to me.

I wondered how many times I had missed those opportunities before.

How many times had Lauren started to tell me something difficult, only to hear me reassure her before she finished?

How many times had she decided it was easier to say she was fine?

I couldn't go back and count them.

I couldn't know what she had chosen not to tell me.

I had to resist the temptation to fill those unknown spaces with guilt.

That would only turn my attention back toward myself.

The point wasn't to discover every mistake I had ever made.

The point was to stop repeating the ones I could now recognize.

I thought about Cole, too.

I still didn't know what he had thought when Lauren asked him to stay on Christmas Eve.

I didn't know whether he had understood how worried she was.

I knew he had chosen to attend his dinner.

I knew she had been left with the twins.

And I knew that she had tried to reach me.

I couldn't change his decision.

I couldn't make their marriage work the way I hoped it would.

I could only make sure that my own response to Lauren was no longer another source of uncertainty.

That was enough work for one person.

I began to understand that support was often less impressive than people imagined.

It wasn't always a dramatic rescue.

It wasn't always an argument with the person who had caused the hurt.

Sometimes it was a phone call returned.

Sometimes it was an offer to help with the babies.

Sometimes it was allowing a conversation to remain uncomfortable because the other person needed to finish speaking.

I had been looking for the right thing to say.

I should have been paying more attention to the person who needed to say something.

That was the difference I wanted to keep learning.

I couldn't promise Lauren that I would never misunderstand her.

But I could make sure she didn't have to carry the burden of correcting me alone.

I could ask.

I could listen.

And when I got something wrong, I could acknowledge it without expecting her to make me feel better.

That was what being sorry required.

Not just regret.

Change.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: I Began to See How Easily a Mother’s Good Intentions Could Become Another Reason for Her Daughter to Keep Quiet

I thought the hardest part would be admitting that I had failed Lauren.
