11 – The More I Thought About the Twins That Night, the More I Understood Why Lauren Had Needed Another Adult Beside Her

When Lauren talked about Noah and Lily, her voice changed.

Even when she was tired, she could find something to smile about.

A small expression.

A new sound.

The ordinary surprises that came with watching babies grow.

I liked hearing those stories.

They reminded me that there was joy in her life, too.

Christmas Eve had not erased that joy.

But it had shown me how much work could hide behind the ordinary moments people liked to celebrate.

Seven-month-old babies needed attention.

When one was upset, the other might need something at the same time.

When both were ill, even familiar routines could become difficult.

Lauren had to watch them carefully.

She had to respond when they cried.

She had to keep track of their condition while trying to manage her own worry.

She had been doing all of that before she asked Cole to stay.

And she had continued doing it after he left.

I had sometimes pictured raising children as a series of manageable tasks.

Feed them.

Change them.

Comfort them.

Get them to sleep.

Anyone who had cared for a baby knew it wasn't that simple.

The tasks themselves were ordinary.

The difficulty came from having to do them repeatedly, often without rest, and sometimes while worried about a child's health.

With twins, the demands could arrive together.

Lauren could not divide herself in half.

She could only move from one child to the other and hope she had enough energy for both.

That was why another adult mattered.

Not because Lauren was incapable.

Because no parent should have to prove their capability by doing everything alone.

I had needed that reminder.

I also had to remember that Cole was their father.

He wasn't a visitor who had been asked to help out of kindness.

He was one of the adults responsible for the children.

Lauren's request had been a request for shared responsibility.

I could understand why his refusal had hurt her.

I could understand why she had wanted him to stay even before the evening became more difficult.

And I could understand why the thought of managing alone might have felt heavier after he made it clear that he would not change his plans.

I didn't know whether he had understood how she felt.

I didn't know whether he had considered the practical consequences of leaving.

I wasn't going to make up answers.

But I could see the imbalance in what Lauren had described.

She was asking for help with a responsibility that belonged to both of them.

He was telling her to manage it herself.

I kept returning to that distinction.

There was a time when I might have said that marriage required patience.

I might have reminded Lauren that people sometimes had obligations outside the home.

I might have encouraged her not to turn one difficult evening into a larger disagreement.

Those responses would have sounded reasonable.

They also would have missed the point.

She had not called me to ask whether Cole was allowed to have a work dinner.

She had called because she needed support.

The question wasn't whether he had a right to make plans.

The question was whether her concerns mattered enough for him to reconsider them.

I could not answer for him.

I could, however, stop minimizing the burden that had fallen on her.

That was part of being honest.

I thought about the pediatrician, too.

Lauren had already contacted the doctor before asking Cole to stay.

She had taken her concern seriously enough to seek guidance.

She was not asking him to accept a problem she had refused to investigate.

She had done what she could to understand the situation and still wanted help managing the children.

That detail mattered to me.

It showed how carefully she had approached the evening.

She wasn't looking for a reason to cancel his plans.

She was trying to care for her babies.

When I imagined her moving between Noah and Lily, I found myself wishing I had been closer.

I could have held one while she tended to the other.

I could have helped her keep the house calm.

I could have sat beside her while she watched the babies and talked through what she was worried about.

I didn't need to know everything about their condition to offer practical help.

I could have been another pair of hands.

Instead, I had been at home with my rolls cooling on the counter.

The thought still made me uncomfortable.

I had been doing something ordinary and harmless.

But I had let the harmlessness of my own evening distract me from the possibility that someone else was having a hard one.

That was the part I wanted to remember without using it to punish myself.

Feeling guilty would not have helped Lauren care for the twins.

Learning from the mistake might.

I couldn't be present in every difficult moment.

No parent could.

But I could stop requiring a perfect explanation before I offered support.

I could call back.

I could ask what was happening.

I could offer to come over when that was what she needed.

And I could remember that being a good mother to an adult child did not mean standing back until she had exhausted every other option.

Sometimes it meant showing up before she had to ask a second time.

<a
