9 – I Began to Understand That My Daughter Had Learned to Make Her Pain Sound Small, and I Had Helped Her Believe That Was Necessary

I used to think the hardest part of raising a child was knowing when to let go.

Lauren had grown up.

She had a husband, two children, and a home of her own.

I couldn't make her decisions for her, and I didn't want to.

But I was beginning to understand that letting go did not mean becoming unavailable.

There was still a place for me in her life.

I had simply been too comfortable assuming she would tell me when she needed it.

A few days after Christmas, I found myself thinking about the way she had ended our conversation.

She had thanked me for listening.

It was a small thing to say.

I had heard those words from her many times, usually after she asked for something that should not have required an apology or an expression of gratitude.

I had never paid much attention to that habit.

Now I wondered why she seemed so relieved when someone simply listened.

I didn't want to turn that question into another assumption.

So when we spoke again, I tried to give her room to answer in her own way.

The twins were doing better, she told me.

She sounded relieved when she talked about them.

I could picture her moving around the house with one baby in her arms and the other close by.

Even when she was tired, she always seemed to notice the smallest things about them.

A change in their expressions.

A new sound.

The way one child settled more easily than the other.

She knew her babies.

She had been paying attention to them all along.

That was why her concern on Christmas Eve mattered.

She hadn't asked Cole to stay because she wanted to control his evening.

She had asked because she believed the children needed extra attention.

She had already contacted their pediatrician.

She had tried to explain the situation.

And when Cole refused, she had tried to manage without him.

I kept returning to that sequence.

Not because I wanted to make Lauren feel worse about it.

Because I wanted to understand how easily a reasonable request could become something she felt she had to handle alone.

I knew that feeling from other parts of life.

Most people did.

You ask for something small.

The other person tells you why it is inconvenient.

You reconsider.

You tell yourself that perhaps it would be easier to manage without help.

Then you stop asking.

The problem remains.

Only now you carry it quietly.

I had done that myself over the years.

I had also taught Lauren, without meaning to, that being easy to deal with was a virtue worth protecting at almost any cost.

I had praised her for not making a fuss.

I had admired how she kept going.

I had sometimes felt relieved when she told me not to worry.

Those reactions seemed harmless at the time.

But I had to consider what they might have taught her.

Perhaps she had learned that the best way to protect other people was to keep her own difficulties manageable.

Perhaps she had learned to explain away disappointment before anyone else could dismiss it.

I couldn't know for certain.

I wasn't going to tell myself I understood every part of my daughter's heart simply because I had finally started paying attention.

But I could recognize the pattern in the way she spoke.

Even when she was tired, she often found a way to make the situation sound ordinary.

Even when she needed something, she was careful not to ask for too much.

And when I apologized for missing her call, she had tried to make me feel better about it.

That last part stayed with me.

I had been the one who failed to respond.

Yet Lauren had been the one offering reassurance.

I didn't want that to happen again.

Not because I expected her to become someone who complained about everything.

Because I wanted her to know that she could be honest with me without worrying about how I would feel.

I wanted her to be able to say she was exhausted.

I wanted her to tell me when something had hurt her.

I wanted her to ask for help without first explaining why she deserved it.

Those wishes sounded simple.

Living up to them required me to change.

I had to stop treating discomfort as something a conversation should quickly remove.

Sometimes a difficult truth needed to sit between two people for a while.

Sometimes the right response was not an explanation.

Sometimes it was silence, followed by a question.

So I began to practice waiting.

When Lauren talked about her day, I let her finish.

When she mentioned something that sounded difficult, I didn't immediately compare it with my own experiences.

And when she said she was managing, I tried not to mistake that for proof that she had everything she needed.

I wasn't trying to make her dependent on me.

I was trying to make it easier for her to know I was available.

There was a difference.

The babies were growing, and their needs would keep changing.

Lauren would face ordinary problems and difficult ones.

Some days would go smoothly.

Others would leave her tired before dinner.

I couldn't prevent all of that.

But I could stop assuming that because she was capable, she never needed support.

That was the lesson I wanted to keep.

Not that I had to rescue my daughter.

That I had to notice her.

And sometimes noticing began with taking a simple sentence seriously enough to ask one more question.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Had No Right to Decide What
