I just wanted to hear how you really were."

"I'm tired," she admitted.

I smiled, though she couldn't see me.

"That sounds more believable."

She laughed again, and this time I could hear some of the tension leave her voice.

We talked about the twins.

She told me about the things they had been doing lately and the way their needs seemed to change almost every week.

I listened.

I didn't rush to compare her experience with my own memories of raising a child.

I didn't tell her that she would miss these days one day, or that all parents survived them.

Those things might have been true.

They weren't what she needed from me at that moment.

When we finished talking, I felt better.

Not because I had fixed anything.

Because I had made the call I should have been more willing to make before.

I didn't expect Lauren to become an open book overnight.

She had spent a long time being careful with her words.

I couldn't demand that she suddenly trust me with every worry.

If I wanted her to believe I would listen, I had to demonstrate it more than once.

That meant being patient.

It meant accepting that she might still say she was fine when she was tired or upset.

It meant not treating every silence as a problem, while also refusing to assume that silence always meant peace.

I was learning to stay present without trying to take control.

I was learning to offer help without making her feel indebted.

And I was learning that sometimes the most important question a mother could ask was also the simplest.

What do you need?

I had not asked it when Lauren first called.

I couldn't change that.

But I could make room for the question now.

The next time she told me she was managing, I would try to remember that managing was not the same as being supported.

A person could keep moving and still be exhausted.

A person could care for everyone around her and still need someone to care for her.

A person could say the right reassuring words and still wish someone would notice that something was wrong.

I had missed those possibilities for too long.

I didn't want to miss them again.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Time on Lauren’s Screenshot Became More Than a Reminder of One Christmas Night; It Became a Measure of What I Had Failed to Notice

There were no grand conversations that changed everything.
