I said.

She didn't immediately respond.

I wondered whether my words had come too late to mean anything.

Then she said, "I just needed someone there."

That sentence stayed with me.

Not someone to fix everything.

Not someone to take over her life.

Someone there.

I thought about how easily I could have helped.

I could have answered the phone.

I could have returned the call.

I could have asked her whether she wanted me to come over.

Instead, I had let the evening continue without me.

"I'm sorry I missed your call," I told her.

"I know you were busy."

She said it gently.

That made it harder.

She wasn't trying to make me feel guilty.

She was trying to make the situation easier for me, even then.

I recognized that habit because I had seen it before.

Lauren often made room for other people's reasons before she made room for her own feelings.

I had praised her for being considerate.

I had not always noticed when consideration became another way of keeping her needs quiet.

"You can call me again," I said.

"I know."

"And you don't have to tell me everything is fine if it isn't."

There was another pause.

"I wasn't trying to worry you."

"I understand."

I wanted to say more.

I wanted to promise I would never miss another call.

But I couldn't make a promise that depended on things I couldn't completely control.

What I could promise was that I would make an effort to respond, and that I would take her seriously when she asked for help.

So I told her that.

She thanked me.

We didn't solve anything that afternoon.

The twins still needed care.

Cole was still her husband.

Their marriage was still theirs to navigate.

But I felt that something small had shifted between us.

For once, I hadn't tried to explain away her experience.

I had listened.

That evening, I thought again about the rolls I had left on the counter.

They had been a small, ordinary detail in a night I had believed was ordinary.

Now they reminded me how easily a person could become absorbed in the familiar tasks of her own life.

I had been busy.

I had been tired.

I had been doing something useful.

None of those things meant my daughter hadn't needed me.

I couldn't change the first call.

But I could change how I treated the next one.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: I Had Always Believed Staying Out of a Marriage Was Respectful, Until I Realized Silence Could Leave My Own Daughter Without Support

I used to think regret was something you felt about the past.
