18 – I Had Spent the Night Hoping Emma Would Make the Choice for Me, Until I Finally Understood What I Was Asking Her to Carry

The more I thought about the anniversary, the less I could defend the plan I had made.

I had wanted Emma to become angry.

I had wanted her to decide that the marriage was no longer worth the effort.

I had wanted her to say the words I was afraid to say myself.

Then I could tell myself that the ending had been her decision.

I could leave without having to explain why I had already started building another life.

That was the outcome I had been hoping for.

It was also the outcome that required Emma to remain unaware of the truth.

She could not make a fair decision about our marriage if I kept hiding the things that mattered.

I had wanted her to decide what to do with a version of the marriage that I had carefully edited.

I had left Caroline out of it.

I had left out the way I had described our relationship to her.

I had left out my intention to use the anniversary as an opportunity to make Emma give up.

I had left out the money conversation I kept postponing.

I had left out the fact that I knew she was expecting me and had chosen not to come.

I had taken away the information she needed and then imagined her decision would free me from responsibility.

That was the part I found hardest to face.

I had not merely been afraid to end the marriage.

I had been trying to make Emma do the emotional work of ending it while I kept the truth from her.

I wanted her to become tired enough to leave.

I wanted her frustration to become the explanation.

I wanted her decision to protect me from the shame of admitting what I had done.

I had turned her patience into something I could exploit.

I had turned her willingness to keep trying into a reason to delay the truth.

I had treated her love as though it were a resource I could draw on until I no longer needed it.

I didn't like the man that made me.

I also couldn't pretend I had been unaware of the choices I was making.

I had known enough to stop.

I had known enough to call Emma.

I had known enough to tell Caroline that the marriage was not as settled as I had led her to believe.

I had known enough to stop promising that I would explain the money later.

I had chosen not to do those things.

I could not blame uncertainty for decisions that had been made with such clear intentions.

I was uncertain about the future.

I was not uncertain about the lie.

I had sent the message because I wanted Emma to believe I was delayed.

I had stayed with Caroline because I wanted to remain with her.

I had avoided the money conversation because I did not want to face the questions.

I had hoped Emma would end the marriage because I did not want to take responsibility for ending it.

Those were the facts.

I could explain the feelings around them.

I could not make them disappear.

I had spent so long trying to find a way out that I had forgotten something basic.

I did not need to know how Emma would respond before I could tell her the truth.

I did not need to know whether Caroline would forgive me before I could admit what I had concealed.

I did not need to know how the marriage would end before I could stop pretending everything was still under control.

I had made honesty conditional on getting the outcome I wanted.

That was why I kept delaying it.

If I could be certain that Emma would understand, perhaps I would speak.

If I could be certain that Caroline would stay, perhaps I would confess.

If I could be certain that the money conversation would not become a fight, perhaps I would finally have it.

But those guarantees did not exist.

I had to accept that the truth might cost me the relationships I wanted to preserve.

I had to accept that Emma might decide she could no longer trust me.

I had to accept that Caroline might see my behavior differently once she knew the full story.

I had to accept that neither woman owed me the chance to explain myself until I felt comfortable.

They were entitled to their own reactions.

I had spent the anniversary trying to control those reactions before they had even happened.

I could not continue doing that.

I had to let other people know what was happening and allow them to decide what they wanted to do with the information.

That was not a guarantee of a better ending.

It was simply the first honest choice I had been avoiding.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Could No
