17 – I Had Run Out of Honest Reasons to Wait, but I Was Still Afraid of What Would Happen When I Finally Stopped Hiding

I used to think there would be a moment when doing the right thing became easier than doing the wrong thing.

I waited for that moment.

It never came.

The truth remained difficult to say, no matter how many times I rehearsed it in my head.

I could imagine telling Emma about Caroline.

I could imagine explaining the money.

I could imagine admitting that I had wanted her to end the marriage because I was too afraid to do it myself.

In my imagination, the words came out cleanly.

In real life, they would have consequences.

That was what I had been trying to avoid all along.

I wanted to tell the truth without having to watch it change the way people saw me.

I wanted to confess without losing anything.

I wanted to apologize without hearing how much damage I had caused.

I wanted to be forgiven before I had even finished explaining myself.

Those wishes were understandable.

They were also selfish.

I had spent the anniversary acting as though I could keep the consequences at a distance simply by choosing the right words.

The message about work was the clearest example.

I had made my absence sound ordinary.

I had given Emma a reason to wait.

I had protected myself from the immediate discomfort of telling her I wasn't coming.

But the message had not changed what I was doing.

It had only changed what she believed I was doing.

I had confused those two things because the difference was useful to me.

The same was true of Caroline.

I had described the marriage as effectively finished because I wanted our relationship to continue without difficult questions.

My words had created a version of my life in which I was available to her.

My silence had created a different version in which Emma could continue believing she had a husband who intended to meet her for their anniversary.

I was the only person who knew both versions were false in important ways.

I could no longer pretend that I had simply found myself in a situation I didn't understand.

I understood enough.

I knew I had to stop adding to the deception.

I knew the money needed to be discussed.

I knew Caroline deserved to hear the truth about my marriage.

I knew Emma deserved to know why I had not come to the restaurant.

I also knew that none of those conversations guaranteed the outcome I wanted.

That last part was what kept me afraid.

I had built my entire approach around the hope that I could control how things ended.

I wanted Emma to make the decision.

I wanted Caroline to continue believing me.

I wanted the money problem to remain quiet until I had an explanation that would protect me.

I had been trying to manage the reactions of people who did not know what they were reacting to.

It was impossible to keep doing that forever.

Even so, I kept looking for another way to postpone the truth.

I told myself that one more day would not matter.

I told myself that I could choose a better time to speak.

I told myself that I should not make a difficult situation worse by having a conversation while I was upset.

But I had been using those reasons for so long that they no longer meant anything.

They were not a plan.

They were a hiding place.

I had made the hiding place comfortable by repeating the same excuses until they sounded like good judgment.

The problem was that nothing inside it could change.

The marriage remained troubled.

The money remained unexplained.

Caroline remained unaware of the full situation.

Emma remained unaware of the truth about the anniversary.

And I remained the person responsible for keeping those things that way.

I could spend another week thinking about what I should say.

I could spend another month preparing for the conversation.

I could spend the rest of my life wishing I had handled the anniversary differently.

None of that would change the past.

It would only determine how much longer I continued to hide from it.

I had wanted to believe that recognizing my behavior was the beginning of making things right.

But recognition was only the point at which I could no longer honestly claim I didn't understand the problem.

The next step was still mine.

And for the first time, I was beginning to understand that I could not make that step depend on whether I felt ready.

I had already been ready enough to lie.

I needed to become willing to tell the truth.

<a
