15 – I Had Been Trying to Choose the Least Painful Ending, Without Admitting That My Silence Was Making Every Possible Ending Worse

I wanted an ending that would let me look back and believe I had handled things as well as I could.

That was what I told myself.

I wanted to avoid unnecessary pain.

I wanted to be fair to Emma.

I wanted to be honest with Caroline.

I wanted to deal with the money responsibly.

Those were reasonable goals.

But I had been using them to justify a course of action that moved me further away from all of them.

I was not being fair to Emma by hiding the truth.

I was not being honest with Caroline by telling her the marriage was effectively over while concealing the anniversary plans.

I was not dealing with the money responsibly by refusing to discuss it.

And I was not reducing anyone's pain by allowing the situation to continue.

I was only delaying the moment when the truth would become unavoidable.

I had begun to understand that an ending could be painful without being dishonest.

I could end a marriage and still admit that I had caused harm.

I could tell Caroline the truth and accept that she might not want to continue the relationship.

I could explain the money without knowing whether Emma would forgive me.

None of those outcomes was guaranteed to be easy.

But I had been treating difficulty as a reason not to act.

I wanted to avoid the pain of a direct conversation, so I created the possibility of a much worse one later.

I wanted to avoid disappointing Emma in the moment, so I let her continue to believe I was coming to dinner.

I wanted to avoid making Caroline question our relationship, so I left out the details that would have helped her understand it.

I wanted to avoid the financial conversation, so I kept the subject unresolved.

Every time I tried to make the present easier, I made the future harder.

I knew that much.

I still hoped I could find a way around it.

I imagined that if Emma eventually decided to leave, the hardest part would be over.

I imagined that if Caroline continued to believe me, I would have more time to decide what to do.

I imagined that if I could get the money organized, the conversation would become less frightening.

I was always imagining the next stage.

I rarely considered what I needed to do in the current one.

That was the trap.

I had turned my life into a series of conditions that had to be met before I could be honest.

I would speak when I was calmer.

I would confess when I was ready.

I would make a decision when I was certain.

I would explain the money when I had a solution.

But honesty did not require certainty.

It required me to stop pretending that other people were living in the same situation I was.

They weren't.

Emma believed she had a husband who was delayed at work.

Caroline believed she was involved with a man who had already separated from his wife.

I knew those beliefs could not both represent the truth.

I had created the contradiction.

And I was the only person who could stop maintaining it.

I didn't need Emma to make a decision for me.

I didn't need Caroline to guess what I had left out.

I didn't need the money to become easier to explain.

I needed to accept that I had a responsibility to tell the truth, even if the consequences were not what I wanted.

That was the part I kept trying to avoid.

I wanted the truth to lead somewhere comfortable.

I wanted it to give me a clear path forward.

I wanted it to preserve something I cared about.

But truth did not owe me any of those things.

It was not a tool I could use to guarantee a favorable outcome.

It was something I owed the people whose lives were affected by my decisions.

I had been treating honesty as though it were a negotiation.

If I could explain myself well enough, perhaps Emma would understand.

If I could choose the right words, perhaps Caroline would forgive me.

If I could demonstrate that I had been under pressure, perhaps the money conversation would be less painful.

I kept looking for a way to make honesty safe for me.

I had not considered that Emma and Caroline were entitled to make their own choices, even if those choices left me alone.

That was what made my behavior so unfair.

I wanted to retain the power to decide what happened next while denying the other people involved the information they needed to decide for themselves.

I wanted to control the ending before I had admitted the truth about the beginning.

I could no longer pretend those were separate issues.

The ending I wanted was not something I could arrange by making Emma angry enough to leave.

It was not something I could secure by keeping Caroline unaware.

It was not something I could earn by finally explaining the money after months of silence.

Whatever happened next would have to begin with the choices I had already made.

And I would have to accept that I could not control how the people I had hurt responded to them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Had Wanted Everyone to See Me
