14 – The Money Was Still Waiting for an Explanation, and I Had Turned a Difficult Conversation Into Another Reason to Hide

The money had become one of the things I least wanted to think about.

Not because the facts were impossible to understand.

Because explaining them meant sitting across from Emma and allowing her to ask whatever she needed to ask.

I had been avoiding that moment.

I kept telling myself I would talk to her when I could present the situation clearly.

I wanted to have the details organized.

I wanted to know what I could say if she questioned me.

I wanted to be ready for the conversation before I began it.

That sounded sensible.

But I had been using preparation as a way to delay the truth.

I had never set a clear point at which I would stop waiting.

There was always something else I could do first.

I could think through the explanation again.

I could wait until work was less demanding.

I could wait until things between Emma and me felt calmer.

I could wait until I had a better idea of what I wanted from the marriage.

I kept moving the conversation into a future that never arrived.

Meanwhile, Emma still believed we were sharing a life in which important things would eventually be discussed honestly.

I had allowed her to believe that because it was easier than telling her I was withholding information.

The money was not a separate problem.

It was part of the same habit that had led me to lie about the anniversary.

I wanted to control when Emma learned something that could change how she saw me.

I wanted to choose the moment, the words, and the explanation.

I wanted to make sure I had a chance to defend myself before she had time to decide what the information meant.

I had confused being prepared with being honest.

I had also convinced myself that a difficult truth became less harmful if I waited until I could explain it properly.

That wasn't necessarily true.

Sometimes waiting only made the other person wonder why the truth had been kept from them for so long.

I knew Emma deserved an explanation.

I knew the subject wasn't something I could put aside indefinitely.

And I knew that the longer I delayed, the more difficult the conversation would become.

Still, I kept putting it off.

The same thought always returned.

Not yet.

I would deal with it when I was ready.

I would talk about it when I knew what to say.

I would explain everything once I could make the situation sound less troubling.

I never asked whether Emma had a right to know before I felt ready.

I treated my readiness as the deciding factor.

That was selfish.

It was also convenient.

If I could make the conversation depend on how prepared I felt, then I could postpone it whenever I was afraid.

I had been doing that for a long time.

The anniversary showed how far the habit had spread.

I had taken a plan that should have been simple and turned it into something I needed to manage.

I had told Emma I would meet her.

I had sent a message about work.

I had stayed with Caroline.

I had kept the money conversation waiting in the background.

Each part of my life had become something I wanted to control rather than something I was willing to face.

I wanted the marriage to remain available while I decided whether to continue it.

I wanted Caroline to remain available while I decided what to tell her.

I wanted the financial problem to remain quiet while I decided how to explain it.

I wanted all the difficult conversations to wait until I could approach them without fear.

But fear was the reason I kept delaying them.

I had been waiting for fear to disappear before doing something that required courage.

That was another way of making sure I never had to act.

I could have started with one honest sentence.

I could have told Emma there was something important I had not explained.

I could have admitted that I had been avoiding the conversation because I was afraid of her reaction.

I could have acknowledged that my silence had become part of the problem.

I didn't have to solve everything in one sitting.

I only had to stop pretending there was nothing to discuss.

Instead, I kept telling myself that I needed a complete solution before I could begin.

That belief protected me from the first step.

And the first step was the one I was most afraid of.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: I Had Been Trying to Choose the Least Painful Ending, Without
