9 – I Had Spent So Long Preparing My Excuses That I Forgot the Simplest Truth Was the One I Could Never Escape

I wanted to believe that knowing I was wrong meant I had started to change.

It didn't.

I could recognize a bad decision and still make another one.

I could feel guilty and still protect the lie.

I could admit to myself that Emma deserved better and still refuse to give her the truth.

That was the difference between feeling bad about what I had done and being willing to do something about it.

I had spent too much time confusing the two.

The anniversary evening had given me plenty of reasons to stop.

Emma had planned the dinner.

I had promised to attend.

I knew she was expecting me.

And I had already sent the message about work.

There was nothing left to misunderstand.

Yet I continued to think about how I might explain myself if the night became impossible to avoid discussing.

I wanted an explanation that would make sense to Emma.

More than that, I wanted one that would make sense of me.

I wanted to remain the man who had made mistakes rather than the man who had knowingly deceived his wife.

The difference mattered to me because I believed the first man could still be forgiven.

I wasn't sure about the second.

So I kept looking for reasons to describe myself as the first.

I thought about the problems in the marriage.

I thought about how difficult the money had become to discuss.

I thought about how easy it had been to tell Caroline that Emma and I were finished.

Each thought offered a little relief.

Each thought also moved me away from the question I needed to answer.

Why had I continued to lie when I knew the truth would hurt people?

The honest answer was simple.

Because lying had allowed me to keep what I wanted.

I wanted Caroline to remain close to me.

I wanted Emma to remain unaware of what I was doing.

I wanted to postpone the financial conversation.

I wanted to avoid being the person who ended the marriage.

The lies protected those wishes for a while.

That was why I kept choosing them.

I had made dishonesty useful to myself.

And once I started treating it that way, I could find a reason for almost anything.

I could say I was waiting for a better moment.

I could say I was trying to avoid unnecessary conflict.

I could say I needed to understand my feelings.

Those statements sounded reasonable when I considered them one at a time.

Together, they described a man who had decided that his comfort mattered more than anyone else's right to know the truth.

I didn't want to admit that.

I had spent years believing that being a good husband meant showing up, paying attention, and trying to provide a stable life.

I had thought those things counted for more than they did.

They mattered, of course.

But they couldn't cancel out the deliberate choices I was making now.

I couldn't use the years behind me as a shield against the damage in front of me.

Emma had trusted me because of the life we had built.

I had used that trust to make my deception easier.

That was a terrible thing to recognize about yourself.

It was worse to realize that recognition alone changed nothing.

I still had to decide what to do.

And I still wanted to avoid deciding.

I had imagined that one day the situation would become clear enough for me to act without hesitation.

I would understand the money.

I would understand my feelings about the marriage.

I would know what to say to Caroline.

Then I could have the conversations I had been postponing.

But the clarity I wanted depended on my being honest about things I was actively hiding.

I was waiting for the consequences of my choices to become easier before I was willing to acknowledge those choices.

It was backward.

I knew it was backward.

I continued anyway.

There was something especially cowardly about the way I wanted Emma to end things.

I wasn't merely afraid of hurting her.

I was afraid of being judged for the hurt I caused.

If she chose to leave, I could tell myself that the marriage had failed on both sides.

If she said she couldn't trust me anymore, I could focus on the fact that we had reached that point rather than on what I had done to bring us there.

I could make the ending sound mutual.

I could avoid saying that I had been preparing for it while she was still trying to make time for us.

I wanted the final decision to erase the decisions that had led to it.

That was never going to happen.

Even if Emma had decided to leave without asking me a single question, I would still have known what I had done.

I would still have known about Caroline.

I would still have known about the money.

I would still have known that I had sent a false message on our anniversary.

I could change the way I described those things.

I could not change the things themselves.

I think that was what frightened me most.

I had been relying on the possibility of a different explanation.

I wanted a story in which my choices had been understandable enough to make me innocent.

But understanding a person's choices does not make those choices harmless.

And an explanation is not the same as an excuse.

I had spent the evening searching for the second while pretending I wanted the first.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I
