8 – I Could Explain Every Reason I Had Given Myself, but None of Them Changed the Fact That Emma Had Trusted Me

By then, I had become very good at explaining my behavior to myself.

I could describe the problems in my marriage.

I could talk about the pressure I felt.

I could explain why I had avoided the money conversation.

I could tell myself that my relationship with Caroline had grown out of feelings I hadn't known how to handle.

I could make every decision sound like the next step in a situation I had not entirely chosen.

What I couldn't honestly explain away was the fact that I had choices.

I had chosen to keep the truth from Emma.

I had chosen to tell Caroline that I was separated.

I had chosen to let the anniversary plans stand even though I knew I wasn't going to honor them.

I had chosen to send a message that made my absence sound like a work problem.

No one had forced me to do any of those things.

I had done them because they allowed me to avoid a conversation I didn't want to have.

I had made the same choice repeatedly, then acted as though the situation had become too complicated for me to control.

It hadn't become complicated by itself.

I had made it complicated.

The restaurant was still the simplest part of the story.

Emma had booked a table.

She had asked me to be there.

I had said yes.

Everything after that was something I had added.

The lies.

The delay.

The other relationship.

The hope that Emma would end the marriage for me.

The money I kept promising to explain.

I had taken an ordinary plan and turned it into a place where all my excuses met.

I could not pretend I didn't know what the evening meant.

I could not claim I had forgotten.

I could not say the plans had changed.

I knew exactly what I had agreed to do.

And I knew exactly what I had done instead.

That knowledge stayed with me, even when I tried to distract myself.

I would think about Emma waiting at the restaurant, then turn my attention elsewhere.

I would remember the message I had sent, then tell myself I could explain later.

I would consider the money, then decide I needed more time.

I kept moving away from the truth and calling the movement progress.

It was easier than stopping.

Stopping would have required me to admit that I had been wrong long before that evening.

It would have meant recognizing that I had been using Emma's trust to avoid responsibility.

It would have meant acknowledging that Caroline had been given a version of my life designed to make me more appealing to her.

It would have meant accepting that I was not simply a man caught between two difficult relationships.

I was a man who had made both relationships more difficult by refusing to tell the truth.

I didn't want to see myself that way.

I wanted to believe there was still a good explanation for everything.

I wanted to believe that if I could arrange the next conversation properly, I could make the damage seem smaller.

I wanted to believe that the person I had been before all this could still be used to excuse the person I had become.

But the past did not cancel the present.

Whatever good I had done in my marriage did not make the lie harmless.

Whatever I felt for Caroline did not make my account of the separation honest.

Whatever pressure I was under did not mean I could keep delaying an explanation about money that affected my wife.

I had to stop using the things that might explain my behavior as reasons not to take responsibility for it.

That was the part I kept missing.

Understanding why I had done something was not the same as making it right.

I could spend years explaining how I reached that evening.

I could describe every doubt, every uncomfortable conversation I had postponed, every reason I had given myself for staying silent.

None of it would change the fact that Emma had trusted me to be where I said I would be.

I had broken that trust before she even arrived at the restaurant.

I had broken it when I accepted the reservation while hiding the truth.

I had broken it when I let her believe work was keeping me away.

I had broken it when I chose to remain with Caroline instead of telling my wife what was happening.

The kiss was part of it.

So was the message.

So was every conversation in which I had allowed Emma to believe that the marriage was something I was still treating with care.

I had wanted to make the kiss the main event because it was easy to point to.

It was a clear act.

A moment I could describe.

But the dishonesty had started much earlier.

It had been there in the way I spoke about the marriage.

It had been there in the way I avoided the money.

It had been there in the way I waited for Emma to become angry enough to make the decision I wanted.

By the time I kissed Caroline that evening, I had already spent weeks preparing the excuses I hoped would protect me afterward.

I had made the choices before the moment arrived.

That was what I needed to understand.

I wasn't simply reacting to something that had happened.

I had arranged my life so I could keep doing what I wanted without having to explain it.

I had mistaken the absence of an immediate consequence for proof that I could continue.

And I had mistaken Emma's trust for something that would remain available no matter how I treated it.

I didn't know what she would decide when she finally understood the truth.

I didn't know what Caroline would think if she learned what I had left out.

I didn't know how the money conversation would end.

But I knew that none of those uncertainties gave me the right to keep lying.

I had wanted certainty before I acted honestly.

I had wanted to know that I wouldn't lose everything.

I had wanted a way to tell the truth without becoming the person responsible for the hurt it caused.

That was impossible.

Honesty was not a guarantee that anyone would forgive me.

It was not a promise that Emma would stay.

It was not a promise that Caroline would understand.

It was simply the minimum I owed them.

And I had not given it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: I Had Spent So Long Preparing My Excuses That I Forgot the Simplest Truth Was the
