5 – I Kept Telling Myself There Was Still Time to Fix Things, Even Though Every Choice I Made Was Taking That Time Away

I had become comfortable with the idea that tomorrow could repair what I did today.

It was a useful belief.

It meant I could make a decision without thinking about its consequences for very long.

I could stay with Caroline and tell myself I would explain things to Emma later.

I could avoid the money conversation and tell myself I needed to get my thoughts together first.

I could let another evening pass without facing the marriage I claimed was already over.

Tomorrow was always waiting.

I treated it like a place where difficult things became easier simply because I had postponed them.

They didn't.

I just had more things to explain when I finally got there.

That evening, the restaurant reservation had become a fact I couldn't change.

Emma had made the arrangements.

I had agreed to them.

And I had sent her a message that made my absence sound temporary.

I kept returning to that last detail.

Temporary.

That was what I wanted her to believe.

I didn't want her to think I had deliberately chosen not to come.

I wanted her to imagine a husband who was delayed, distracted, perhaps a little careless, but still planning to arrive.

I wanted her to leave the door open for me.

I wanted the comfort of knowing she was waiting without having to do anything to deserve it.

I had never said those words to myself at the time.

I would have found them ugly.

Instead, I called it needing space.

Caroline didn't know what Emma was doing that evening.

I had made sure of that by leaving the anniversary out of our conversations.

I had told Caroline that my marriage was essentially finished.

I had talked about separation as though it were a settled fact.

I had made the situation sound more complete than it was because I wanted her to feel secure with me.

The truth would have complicated things.

So I kept it away from her.

I didn't consider how much of our relationship depended on information she didn't have.

I considered only whether she seemed happy with what I had told her.

That was another way I measured my success.

If nobody questioned me, I assumed the arrangement was working.

If nobody asked for details, I assumed I had explained enough.

If nobody challenged my version of events, I allowed myself to believe it.

Silence became evidence in my favor.

It should have been the opposite.

The fact that people trusted me didn't mean my story was true.

It meant they had given me the benefit of the doubt.

I used that benefit like a resource I could keep spending.

I had spent a great deal of it by then.

The money was another example.

I had promised myself I would explain it to Emma once I could present the situation properly.

I wanted to have answers ready.

I wanted to anticipate her questions.

I wanted to avoid the moment when she looked at me and understood that I had been keeping something important from her.

I kept waiting for a version of the conversation in which I could remain in control.

But the more I delayed, the less control I had.

Every day I said nothing became another day I would eventually need to explain.

Every excuse created another question.

I knew that much.

I just didn't know how to stop without facing the damage already done.

So I continued.

That was my answer to nearly every difficult situation.

Continue until the consequences became impossible to ignore.

Then look for a way to make them smaller.

I had convinced myself that I could do the same thing with my marriage.

I could remain married to Emma while telling Caroline that the relationship was finished.

I could let Emma believe we were still trying while quietly preparing for an ending.

I could keep the money problem separate from the relationship problem.

I could decide when each conversation happened.

I could choose the order in which everyone learned the truth.

I thought that gave me options.

It gave me more ways to hurt people.

I didn't understand that distinction because I was measuring everything by what it allowed me to avoid.

If I could get through the evening without an argument, I considered that a good result.

If I could keep Caroline from asking about Emma, I considered that a good result.

If I could put off the financial conversation for another day, I considered that a good result.

I never asked what those results meant for anyone else.

I only asked whether I had escaped the immediate discomfort.

That was how I reached the anniversary with so little honesty left.

I had not planned to become a man who could knowingly leave his wife waiting for him.

I had become him through a series of choices that made the next choice easier to justify.

The first lie had been uncomfortable.

The next one had been less so.

Eventually, I could send a false explanation to Emma while standing beside Caroline and still tell myself I was dealing with a complicated situation.

The language protected me.

It made my behavior sound like a problem I was trying to solve.

But I wasn't solving anything.

I was choosing what I wanted and asking other people to live with the consequences without knowing what they were.

That was the truth I kept avoiding.

I wanted Caroline to believe I was available.

I wanted Emma to believe I was coming.

I wanted both beliefs to remain intact until I decided what happened next.

There was no fair way to do that.

I knew it.

I simply preferred the unfair arrangement because it gave me everything I wanted for a little longer.

And that was the part I had to own.
