She had mentioned it often enough that I couldn't pretend I had forgotten.

And still, I was there with another woman.

Caroline's hand rested against my chest.

She looked up at me as if the rest of the world had stopped mattering.

I kissed her again.

My phone vibrated once more.

I let it.

I wish I could say I was confused, that I had been caught between two people I loved, that I didn't know what to do.

That would have been easier to admit.

The truth was that I had already made my choices.

I had simply arranged them so I wouldn't have to look at them all at once.

Caroline believed I was separated from Emma.

Emma believed I was working late.

And I had convinced myself that the money I was hiding could be explained when the time was right.

There was always another time.

Another evening.

Another reason to put off the conversation I knew I needed to have.

That was how I lived then.

Not by making one enormous mistake and watching everything collapse.

By making smaller decisions that allowed me to avoid the consequences of the last one.

I told Caroline I was unhappy at home.

I told Emma I was tired from work.

I told myself I was under pressure.

Each explanation contained enough truth to sound convincing, which made the lies easier to maintain.

I had become good at that.

Good at leaving out the part that mattered.

Good at saying something technically accurate while allowing the other person to believe what suited me.

Looking back, I understand how deliberate it was.

At the time, I called it managing a difficult situation.

That evening, I had a plan.

I wanted Emma to become the person who ended our marriage.

I wanted her to get angry, to say something final, to make a decision I could point to afterward.

If she walked away first, I could tell myself I hadn't abandoned her.

I could tell other people the marriage had been over for a long time.

I could describe myself as a man who had tried.

I could leave out the fact that I had been preparing my escape while she was still making plans for our anniversary.

I wanted the ending without the responsibility of causing it.

That was the man I had become.

I didn't see him clearly until much later.

At the time, I thought I was being clever.

A few days before the anniversary, Emma had asked me about the restaurant while we were standing in the kitchen.

She had her phone in one hand and a mug in the other.

The coffee had gone cold.

She was looking at the reservation details, checking the time and the address.

"Does seven-thirty work for you?"

I was reading something on my own phone.

"Yes."

"You'll be finished at work by then?"

"Of course."

She looked at me for a moment.

I remember that because I almost looked up.

Instead, I kept my eyes on the screen.

"All right," she said.

Then she went back to checking the reservation.

It was an ordinary exchange.

Nothing dramatic happened.

She didn't accuse me of anything. She didn't ask where I had been the night before or why I had started taking calls in another room.

She simply trusted the answer I gave her.

That should have made me feel worse.

Instead, it made everything easier.

Emma had chosen the restaurant on the Upper East Side.

She had booked it a week earlier and mentioned the reservation twice since then.

The first time, she told me how difficult it had been to get a table.

The second time, she asked if I still owned the blue shirt she liked.

I knew which one she meant.

It was hanging in the closet, pushed between two jackets I rarely wore.

She liked it because she said the color suited me.

I remembered that detail.

I remembered the restaurant.

I remembered the date.

I remembered every small thing that proved I knew exactly what I was supposed to be doing.

And I went ahead with my other plans anyway.

The blue shirt stayed in the closet that night.

I had already decided I would not arrive at the restaurant on time.

I had already decided I would send Emma a message about work.

I had already decided that if she became upset, I would let her anger do the work I was unwilling to do myself.

There was no sudden change of heart.

No unexpected event forced me into the situation.

I knew what I was doing.

I just didn't want to call it what it was.

Caroline and I had been seeing each other, and I had given her a version of my marriage that made our relationship seem acceptable.

I told her Emma and I were finished.

I told her we were living separate lives.

I made it sound as if the paperwork and the practical arrangements were the only things left to settle.

I never explained what Emma believed.

I never told Caroline about the anniversary dinner.

I left those details out because I knew they would change the way she looked at me.

I wanted Caroline to see a man who was almost free.

I wanted Emma to keep believing she still had a husband who intended to come home.

I wanted both women to remain where I had placed them.

That was the part I couldn't admit to myself.

I wasn't waiting for a decision.

I was trying to make sure neither woman had enough information to make one without me.

The money made everything worse.

I had been avoiding a conversation about it for longer than I cared to admit.

I knew Emma deserved an explanation, but I kept postponing it.

I would tell her after work slowed down.

I would tell her once I had the details organized.

I would tell her when I could explain everything without making it sound as bad as it was.

Every time I considered bringing it up, I imagined the questions that would follow.

I imagined her sitting across from me, waiting for answers.

I imagined myself having to say something I couldn't soften with a convenient excuse.

So I did what I had learned to do.

I put it off.

The money could wait.

The marriage could wait.

The truth could wait.

That evening, I convinced myself that everything could be dealt with later, after I had arranged the situation to my advantage.

I didn't understand that the arrangement itself was becoming the problem.

By the time Caroline and I were together, the anniversary dinner was already part of the lie.

I knew Emma would get ready.

I knew she would leave the house expecting to meet me.

I knew she would probably arrive a little early because she had made the reservation herself and wanted everything to go smoothly.

I knew all of that because I knew my wife.

I knew the small things she did when something mattered to her.

And I used that knowledge to predict how long I could keep her waiting.

There is no kind way to explain that.

I had stopped treating Emma's trust as something I needed to protect.

I had started treating it as something I could use.

When my phone vibrated again, I finally took it out.

Her name was on the screen.

I stared at it.

I could have answered.

I could have told Caroline I needed to leave.

I could have called Emma and admitted that I wasn't coming.

I could have said the marriage was in trouble because I had helped put it there.

Instead, I opened the message window.

My thumb hovered above the keyboard.

I wanted to sound believable.

Not frightened.

Not guilty.

Just busy.

I typed a short explanation about work keeping me late.

Then I sent it.

The message went through.

I put the phone away.

Caroline asked if something was wrong.

"No," I told her.

She watched me for a second, then moved closer.

I kissed her again.

I knew Emma was waiting for me.

That fact remained in my mind, clear and steady, while I chose to stay where I was.

I didn't forget our anniversary.

I didn't lose track of the time.

I didn't misunderstand the plans.

I knew exactly what I was missing.

And I stayed.

Click here to continue reading: PART 2: The Blue Shirt Stayed in the Closet While Emma Prepared
