Maybe he wants the wedding picture to be the important one now."

I shook my head.

"You don't have to arrange your memories according to what someone else might prefer."

He looked at me.

"Even Dad?"

"Even Dad."

Noah smiled.

Then he returned to his homework.

I left him alone.

As I walked down the hallway, I thought about how often adults expected children to adjust without making anyone uncomfortable.

We told them that families changed.

We told them that everyone still loved them.

Then we watched closely to see whether they accepted those explanations in the right way.

We wanted them to be resilient.

Sometimes what we really wanted was for them to make our decisions easier to live with.

I had done that myself.

During the divorce, I had sometimes hoped Noah would adapt quickly because I was exhausted.

I wanted him to understand that we were better apart.

I wanted him to see that I was doing my best.

I wanted him to be okay so I could stop worrying about whether he was okay.

Those were understandable wishes.

They were also selfish at times.

A child could not be expected to process a family's changes according to an adult's timetable.

Noah needed his own time.

He needed room for memories that included his father.

He needed room for sadness that didn't mean he wanted his parents to get back together.

And he needed to know that neither of us would punish him for loving the other.

That afternoon, I called my sister.

I told her that Noah had framed the two photographs.

She laughed softly.

"That sounds like him."

"It does."

"How are you feeling about everything now?"

I looked toward the hallway.

"I'm better."

"Better isn't the same as fine."

"No," I said. "It isn't."

She didn't rush to fill the silence.

I appreciated that.

I told her that the wedding had been difficult, but not in the way I had expected.

I had spent weeks preparing for the moment when I would see Ethan standing beside Lila.

I hadn't prepared for the moment when I would see Noah standing beside his father and realize how much he had needed that.

My sister listened.

When I finished, she said, "You can be glad for him without pretending you weren't hurt."

I closed my eyes.

"That's what I'm trying to learn."

After the call, I returned to work.

The seed co-op was busy, and there were orders waiting to be checked.

I spent the afternoon labeling packets and answering questions.

One customer asked me whether a particular variety of seed would grow well in a shaded garden.

I explained what I knew and suggested an alternative.

It felt good to answer a question that had a practical solution.

Not every problem required me to understand another person's feelings.

Some things simply needed attention.

When I came home, Noah was in the living room.

He was talking to Ethan on the phone.

I heard him ask whether his father could come to one of his school activities.

Then he listened.

"Okay," he said. "I'll tell you when I know the date."

He paused.

"Yes, I want you to come."

I stopped in the hallway.

Noah sounded hopeful.

He also sounded comfortable enough to ask directly.

That was different from the boy who had held the wedding invitation and wondered whether he was still part of his father's family.

When the call ended, he came into the kitchen.

"Dad said he'll try to come."

"That's good."

"He said I should tell him the date as soon as the teacher gives it to us."

I nodded.

"Then we'll make sure he knows."

Noah smiled and went back to his room.

I stood at the counter for a moment.

Ethan hadn't promised that he would definitely attend.

He had said he would try.

I could have criticized the uncertainty.

I could have reminded myself of all the times a vague answer had disappointed me during our marriage.

Instead, I let the answer remain what it was.

An intention.

Now Ethan would have to decide whether to follow through.

Noah would learn from what happened.

And I would do my best not to interfere before there was a reason.

That evening, I looked at the two photographs again.

They were straight on the desk.

The edges of the frames almost touched.

I didn't feel threatened by them.

I felt grateful that Noah had found a way to keep both memories without asking either one to erase the other.

The past was still part of his life.

So was the future.

He didn't need to choose between them.

Neither did I.

Click here to continue reading: PART 19: I Had Stopped Looking for a Hidden Meaning in the Invitation When Ethan Asked Me a Question I Never Expected Him to Ask

A few days later, Noah asked whether we could print another photograph.
