I asked.

"Yes."

He stood by the front door for a moment.

Then he turned back toward me.

"Mom, what if Dad wants to talk about the wedding?"

"You can talk about it if you want to."

"What if I don't?"

"Then you can tell him you'd rather talk about something else."

Noah considered that.

"Can I really say that?"

"Yes."

He nodded.

I had spent so long trying to anticipate every difficult moment that I sometimes forgot my son was learning to handle them himself.

He didn't need me to prepare an answer for every question.

He needed to know he was allowed to have one.

When Ethan arrived, Noah went outside to meet him.

I watched through the window as they greeted each other.

Ethan said something that made Noah smile.

Then they walked toward the car together.

I waited until they drove away before returning to the kitchen.

The house felt quiet.

I put away the breakfast dishes and started a load of laundry.

For the first hour, I managed not to check my phone.

Then I checked it.

There was no message.

I put it down.

I had promised myself that I would let them have their time together without turning every silence into a problem.

I wanted to keep that promise.

So I went to the co-op and finished some work I had brought home.

By lunchtime, I was thinking about something else.

That was progress.

Not a dramatic kind.

Just the ordinary sort that happens when you stop making the same worry the center of every day.

Noah returned in the late afternoon.

He came into the kitchen carrying his bag.

"How was it?" I asked.

"Good."

He opened the refrigerator and looked inside.

"Is there anything to eat?"

I smiled.

"Hello to you, too."

He grinned.

"I'm hungry."

I made him a sandwich.

He sat at the table and began telling me about his day.

They had gone somewhere for lunch, then walked around for a while.

Ethan had asked about school.

Noah had told him about a project he was working on.

They had talked about the wedding briefly, but mostly they had talked about ordinary things.

"What did you think?" I asked.

"About what?"

"Seeing your dad."

Noah took another bite.

"It felt normal."

I let that answer sit.

Normal.

After everything we had worried about, the word seemed almost too small.

But perhaps normal was exactly what we needed.

Noah didn't need every visit to become a meaningful conversation.

He needed time with his father that wasn't organized around the divorce or the wedding.

He needed to be a child again.

"That's good," I said.

He nodded.

Then he asked whether he could invite a friend over the following weekend.

I told him we could arrange it.

He went upstairs to call his friend.

I stayed at the table, finishing my coffee.

For the first time in weeks, I realized I hadn't asked whether Ethan had mentioned Lila.

I hadn't asked whether Noah had been included in any plans.

I hadn't tried to work out what his father's tone meant.

I had simply listened to my son talk about his day.

It felt lighter.

That evening, Ethan sent a message thanking me for helping arrange the visit.

I replied that Noah had enjoyed it.

Ethan said he was glad.

Then he asked whether we could make a regular plan for their time together.

I read the message carefully.

He wasn't asking me to manage his relationship with Noah.

He was asking to establish a routine.

I told him that would be helpful and suggested that he discuss the details directly with our son, while making sure the schedule worked with school.

Ethan agreed.

The conversation ended there.

No argument.

No long explanation.

No need to revisit the wedding.

I put my phone away.

Later, I checked on Noah.

He was sitting at his desk, drawing in a notebook.

The wedding photograph was still beside his books.

He hadn't removed it.

He had simply left it behind for one afternoon.

I stood in the doorway.

"Everything okay?"

He looked up.

"Yes."

"What are you drawing?"

He showed me a picture of a house with a large front window and a tree beside the door.

It wasn't particularly detailed.

I liked it anyway.

"That's good," I said.

He smiled.

Then he returned to his drawing.

I went back downstairs.

I thought about the invitation again, but this time the memory didn't make my stomach tighten.

The card had started a difficult conversation.

It had forced Noah and me to face questions we might otherwise have avoided.

It had also forced me to look at my own fear.

I had been afraid that Ethan's new marriage would somehow erase the years we had spent together.

I had been afraid that Noah would be expected to smile for photographs while hiding his confusion.

I had been afraid that my former husband would be praised for doing the bare minimum while I carried the difficult parts at home.

Some of those fears had come from things I knew about Ethan.

Others had come from things I hadn't yet seen happen.

I couldn't keep treating possibilities as facts.

That wasn't fair to him.

It wasn't fair to Noah, either.

The only way forward was to pay attention to what actually happened.

If Ethan followed through, I would acknowledge it.

If he disappointed Noah, I would help our son deal with the disappointment without turning it into a judgment about his entire relationship with his father.

If I felt hurt, I would find a way to handle that feeling without handing it to my child.

I wouldn't always get it right.

But I could keep trying.

The next morning, Noah came downstairs and asked whether I had seen his math folder.

I helped him find it under a stack of books.

He thanked me and hurried to finish his homework before school.

I watched him move around the kitchen.

He was thinking about a school assignment, not his father's wedding.

I was grateful.

Not because the wedding no longer mattered.

Because it no longer had to matter every minute.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: When Noah Asked Whether He Could Keep Both Photographs, I Realized That Moving Forward Did Not Require Him to Choose Which Past Was Real

Noah didn't take the wedding photograph when he went to see Ethan the following weekend.
