It's not just about how you feel."

He looked at the photograph again.

"Then how will I know?"

I considered the question.

"You'll know by what he does. Whether he listens to you. Whether he makes time for you. Whether you can tell him the truth without being afraid."

Noah nodded slowly.

"Okay."

He placed the picture on the table.

"Do you think he was a good dad before?"

The question was harder.

I could have given him a simple answer.

I could have said yes and avoided the parts that hurt.

I could have said no and made the past sound worse than it had been.

Neither would have been fair.

"Your dad has always loved you," I said. "He hasn't always known the best way to show it."

Noah looked at me.

"Did he love you?"

"Yes."

"Then why did you get divorced?"

I folded my hands together.

"Because loving someone doesn't automatically mean you know how to live well together."

He thought about that.

"Is that why people get divorced?"

"Sometimes."

He was quiet for a while.

Then he asked, "Do you think Dad will forget about us now that he's married?"

I felt the old fear return.

Not because I believed Ethan would forget his son.

Because I knew how much it would hurt Noah if he did.

"No," I said carefully. "I don't think he will forget you."

"What about you?"

I looked at him.

"Forget me?"

He nodded.

I shook my head.

"Your dad and I will always have a connection because we're your parents. But we don't have to be married to take care of you."

Noah seemed to think about that.

Then he picked up the photograph again.

"I like this picture."

"So do I."

He returned it to his room.

I sat at the table for several minutes after he left.

I had answered his questions as honestly as I could, but I knew there was no sentence that would remove his uncertainty.

He would have to learn what Ethan's promises meant by watching what happened over time.

So would I.

The next few days passed without much difficulty.

Noah went to school.

I worked at the co-op.

The ordinary rhythm of our lives returned.

Ethan sent messages now and then.

He asked about Noah's schoolwork and whether he had enjoyed the wedding.

He also asked whether we could arrange a visit.

Noah was excited.

He talked about it throughout the week.

I helped him get ready on Saturday morning.

He chose comfortable clothes and packed a small bag.

Before he left, he checked that his phone was charged.

"Do you have everything?" I asked.

He nodded.

Then he hesitated.

"What if I want to come home early?"

I looked at him.

"You can call me."

"Will you be upset?"

"No."

"Even if I don't stay the whole time?"

I knelt beside him.

"Noah, you don't have to stay somewhere just to make another person happy. If you need me, call me."

He nodded.

I hugged him.

Then I watched him leave with his father.

For the first hour, I tried to keep myself occupied.

I cleaned the kitchen.

I watered the plants.

I sorted through some paperwork I had been putting off.

Every so often, I looked at my phone.

I wasn't proud of that.

I knew Noah was safe with Ethan.

I knew I had encouraged their relationship.

But letting go of control was harder than talking about it.

I had spent so long being the parent who handled the details that I had forgotten how to trust someone else to handle them.

I needed to learn.

A little later, Noah sent me a message.

He said everything was fine.

I replied that I was glad.

Then I put my phone away.

I didn't ask what they were doing.

I didn't ask whether Ethan had remembered every detail.

I let them have their time together.

When Noah returned that evening, he was tired but cheerful.

He told me about the places they had visited and the food they had eaten.

He talked about a conversation he had with his father.

I listened.

I didn't interrupt to ask whether Ethan had said anything about the wedding.

I didn't need to turn every visit into a report.

After a while, Noah went upstairs.

I was washing dishes when he returned.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"I think Dad is trying."

I turned off the water.

"That sounds good."

He nodded.

"He's not perfect."

I smiled a little.

"No, none of us are."

"But I think he wants to do better."

I looked at my son.

He wasn't asking me to guarantee anything.

He was telling me what he had noticed.

I could respect that.

"Then give him the chance to show you," I said.

Noah smiled.

He returned to his room.

I stood at the sink for a while, listening to the water drip from the faucet.

I wanted to believe that Ethan was changing.

I also knew that I had once mistaken intention for change because I desperately wanted our marriage to work.

I wouldn't make that mistake for Noah.

I could welcome Ethan's efforts without pretending they were enough.

I could be hopeful without asking my son to trust blindly.

And I could accept that the relationship between a father and his child would have its own rhythm, separate from the marriage that had ended.

That night, I looked at the wedding photograph on Noah's desk.

I didn't need it to prove that Ethan was a good father.

I didn't need it to prove that our family had once been happy.

It was simply a record of a day when we had managed to stand together.

What happened next would matter more.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Finally Stopped Measuring Ethan by the Man I Had Married and Started Watching the Father Our Son Needed Him to Become

The following week, Noah began talking about his father more often.
