About making sure Noah knows he doesn't have to pretend."

I leaned against the doorway.

"All right."

"I don't want him to feel that way."

"Then keep talking to him."

"I will."

I had heard those words before.

This time, I didn't challenge them.

There was no point arguing about a promise that had not yet been tested.

Instead, I asked Ethan whether he had thought about how he and Noah would stay in touch.

He said they could arrange regular calls and make plans to spend time together.

"That would help," I said.

"I know I've been distracted lately."

I looked toward the kitchen.

The invitation had arrived six months after our divorce, but the weeks surrounding it had made everything feel as though it were happening at once.

Ethan had been planning a wedding.

Noah had been trying to understand his place in it.

I had been trying to keep the two of them from hurting each other while dealing with my own feelings.

Perhaps Ethan had been distracted.

Perhaps I had, too.

"I think Noah needs consistency more than anything," I told him.

"I agree."

We talked briefly about the next few weeks.

Nothing dramatic was decided.

There were no grand declarations.

Just a conversation about making plans and keeping them.

When we finished, I handed the phone back to Noah.

He returned to the couch and continued talking to his father for a few more minutes.

Afterward, he looked calmer.

"What did Dad say?" I asked.

"He wants to take me somewhere next weekend."

"Where?"

"He hasn't decided."

I smiled.

"Then you'll have something to look forward to."

Noah nodded.

He went upstairs to put his phone away.

I remained in the living room.

The photograph was on his desk, visible through the open bedroom door.

I could see the edge of it from where I stood.

For a moment, I thought about how much effort we had all spent trying to make the wedding go well.

We had worried about the invitation.

We had discussed the seating.

We had taken the photographs.

We had tried to ensure that nobody felt uncomfortable.

But the most important part was happening now, after the formal event had ended.

Ethan was talking to his son because his son wanted to talk to him.

No guests were watching.

Nobody was taking pictures.

There was nothing to display.

Only a father and his child, trying to find a way forward.

I wanted to believe that this was where things would begin to change.

But I knew better than to confuse a good conversation with a lasting change.

I had made that mistake in my marriage.

Whenever Ethan and I had a difficult conversation that ended peacefully, I would tell myself we had finally understood each other.

For a few days, things would feel better.

Then the old habits would return.

We would avoid a problem until it became impossible to ignore.

We would make promises in the middle of an argument and forget them when the argument was over.

Eventually, the distance between us became larger than our willingness to cross it.

I didn't want to repeat that pattern with our son.

So I decided to pay attention to what happened next.

Not to search for mistakes.

Not to collect evidence against Ethan.

Just to see whether the words were followed by actions.

The following morning, Noah asked whether he could call his father before school.

I told him he could.

Ethan answered.

They spoke for a few minutes about Noah's plans for the day.

It was an ordinary conversation.

Noah asked whether his father had decided where they would go the following weekend.

Ethan said he was still thinking about it.

Noah sounded disappointed, but he didn't become upset.

They agreed to talk again later.

When the call ended, Noah put his phone into his schoolbag.

"He's busy," he said.

I looked at him.

"Yes, he might be."

"But he answered."

I nodded.

"He did."

Noah seemed satisfied with that.

He picked up his bag and went to the door.

I watched him leave.

I didn't know whether Ethan would keep every promise he made.

I didn't know whether our son would continue feeling comfortable at his father's house or whether the new marriage would bring difficulties we hadn't yet anticipated.

But I knew one thing.

Noah was learning that he could ask for what he needed.

That mattered.

I had spent too many years making my own needs smaller because I didn't want to cause an argument.

I didn't want him to learn the same habit.

That evening, I took the invitation out of the drawer.

I looked at it for a moment, then placed it back.

The card was no longer a question I needed to answer.

It was simply the announcement of something that had happened.

The real questions belonged to the days that followed.

Would Ethan continue showing up?

Would Noah feel free to tell him the truth?

Would I allow their relationship to grow without making every change feel like a loss?

I couldn't answer any of those questions yet.

But I could keep the space open for the answers to arrive.

Click here to continue reading: PART 15: When Noah Asked Whether His Father Had Changed, I Had to Admit That I Was Still Learning How to Tell Hope From a Promise

Ethan answered Noah's call that evening.
