They're just your feelings."

He seemed to consider that.

"Can I tell him I'm happy for him but sad, too?"

"Yes."

"Will he understand?"

"I hope so."

Noah looked down at his shoes.

"I think he might."

I was glad to hear it.

For months, I had worried that Ethan would expect our son to accept every change without complaint.

But perhaps I had underestimated him.

Perhaps he could learn to listen differently.

Perhaps I could stop preparing for every possible disappointment long enough to see what was actually happening.

We sat outside for several minutes.

Then Noah asked whether we could go home soon.

"Of course," I said.

"Can I say goodbye to Dad first?"

"Absolutely."

We returned to the reception.

Ethan was speaking with Lila near the front of the room.

When he saw us, he excused himself and walked over.

"Everything all right?"

Noah nodded.

"I'm getting tired."

Ethan's expression softened.

"I understand. It's been a long day."

Noah looked at him.

"Can we take one more picture?"

Ethan smiled.

"Of course."

Noah reached into his jacket and checked that the old photograph was still in its envelope.

Then he took out his phone.

"I want one with you and Mom."

The room seemed to become quieter, though the music was still playing.

Ethan looked at Noah.

Then he looked at me.

I couldn't tell what he was thinking.

For a moment, I remembered the invitation arriving in the mail.

The thick paper.

The gold lettering.

The two names printed so neatly together.

I remembered how quickly I had wondered what Ethan wanted people to see.

Now our son was asking us to stand together for a photograph.

Not as husband and wife.

Not as a family pretending nothing had changed.

As the two people who would always be his parents.

I looked at Ethan.

He seemed uncertain, too.

Then he nodded.

"All right."

Noah's face brightened.

We found a quieter place near the side of the room.

A guest offered to take the picture.

Noah stood between us.

I could feel the warmth of his shoulder against my arm.

Ethan stood on his other side.

For a moment, none of us knew what to do with our hands.

Then Noah reached out and took each of us by the hand.

"Ready?"

The guest lifted the phone.

I looked at the camera.

Ethan did the same.

Noah smiled.

The picture was taken.

Then another.

In the second one, Noah was laughing because Ethan had said something under his breath.

I laughed, too.

The guest showed us the photographs.

They were ordinary pictures.

Three people standing together.

No grand statement.

No proof that the divorce had been painless.

No guarantee that the future would be easy.

But Noah looked happy.

That mattered more than anything else.

He took the phone and studied the images.

"I like this one."

He showed it to Ethan.

"I do, too," Ethan said.

Then Noah showed it to me.

I smiled.

"It's a good picture."

He carefully saved it.

After a moment, Ethan spoke.

"I'd like a copy, if that's okay."

Noah nodded.

"I'll send it to you."

Ethan looked at me.

"And you?"

"I'd like one, too."

He nodded.

For the first time that day, I didn't wonder whether he wanted the photograph to prove something.

Perhaps he did want people to see that he was still a father who included his son.

Perhaps he wanted the picture because he was proud of Noah.

Perhaps he wanted to remember a day when his old family and new life had stood close enough to share a moment.

I couldn't know.

But I had begun to understand that the image itself could never tell the whole story.

A photograph could show us standing together.

It couldn't show the conversations we still needed to have.

It couldn't show whether Ethan would call Noah next week.

It couldn't show whether I would continue learning to let go of the life I had imagined.

It couldn't show whether Lila would find her place in our son's life or how long it might take.

Those things would be decided later, in ordinary moments that no camera would record.

Noah put his phone away.

"Can we go home now?"

I nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan crouched slightly so he could look Noah in the eye.

"Thank you for coming today."

Noah gave him a small smile.

"You're welcome."

Ethan hesitated.

Then he added, "I'm glad you were here."

Noah looked at him.

"Me too."

They hugged.

This time, there was no awkwardness.

Ethan held him for a few seconds longer than he had at the entrance.

When they separated, he told Noah he loved him.

Noah said he loved him, too.

I turned away for a moment, giving them privacy.

Not because I was angry.

Because I understood that the relationship between them belonged to them.

I didn't need to stand in the middle of it.

When Noah returned to my side, he slipped his hand into mine.

We said goodbye to Ethan and Lila.

Lila thanked us for coming.

I thanked her for having us.

The exchange was brief and polite.

I didn't know what kind of relationship we would have in the future.

I didn't need to decide that afternoon.

We walked toward the exit together.

At the doorway, Noah stopped and looked back.

Ethan was standing near the front of the room, speaking with another guest.

He noticed Noah and raised his hand.

Noah waved.

Then he turned and followed me outside.

The air felt different after the noise of the reception.

Noah climbed into the car and fastened his seat belt.

I started the engine.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he looked at me.

"Mom?"

"Yes?"

"I think I'm glad I went."

I smiled.

"I'm glad, too."

He leaned back in his seat.

A few minutes later, he fell asleep.

I drove home carefully, listening to the quiet sound of the road beneath the tires.

The day had not solved everything.

It hadn't made the divorce less real or erased the questions Noah would still have.

But it had given him something he needed.

A picture with his father.

A picture with both his parents.

And the knowledge that he could feel several things at once without betraying anyone.

When we arrived home, I helped him inside.

He went straight to his room, still holding his phone.

I heard him moving around for a few minutes before the house became quiet.

Then I returned to the kitchen.

The drawer was closed.

Inside it, the invitation remained folded in its envelope.

I took it out and placed it on the counter.

For the first time, I could look at it without feeling that I had to decide what it meant.

Ethan had married Lila.

Noah had attended.

We had taken our photographs.

The rest would depend on what each of us did after the guests went home and the formal clothes were put away.

I folded the invitation carefully.

Then I returned it to the drawer.

I wasn't ready to throw it away.

But I no longer needed to keep it in front of me.

Click here to continue reading: PART 13: The Morning After the Wedding, Noah Checked His Phone Before
