The dishes were put away, and the invitation was no longer sitting on the table.

I had put it in the drawer the night before.

For some reason, I didn't want to leave it out where I would see it when we returned.

I locked the front door and followed Noah to the car.

During the drive, he watched the passing houses.

He asked whether the wedding would have flowers.

I said I assumed it would.

He asked whether there would be music.

I said probably.

Then he asked whether I thought Lila would be nervous.

"I imagine she might be."

He considered that.

"She's getting married, too."

"Yes."

"Maybe she's worried about things."

"Maybe."

Noah looked out the window again.

I wondered what he imagined about Lila.

She wasn't a stranger to him, exactly, but she wasn't someone he had grown up with. She was part of his father's new life, and that made her difficult to place in the family he already understood.

I didn't want to tell him how he should feel about her.

I didn't want to make her into an enemy simply because she was marrying Ethan.

Whatever had happened between the adults, Noah deserved the chance to form his own opinion.

When we arrived, there were already cars in the parking area.

Noah sat still for a moment after I turned off the engine.

"Are we here?"

"Yes."

He looked toward the entrance.

People were arriving in small groups, dressed carefully for the occasion. Some were laughing as they greeted one another. Others were checking their phones or carrying small gifts.

Everything looked ordinary.

That was what surprised me.

I had spent so much time imagining the wedding as a defining moment that I had forgotten it would also be a gathering of people trying to get through a day without spilling anything on their clothes.

Noah opened his door.

I got out and walked around to meet him.

"Ready?"

He nodded.

We approached the entrance together.

I had expected Ethan to meet us outside, but he wasn't there yet.

A woman near the doorway checked a list and welcomed us.

She asked whether we were guests of the bride or groom.

I told her we were with Ethan.

Her expression brightened.

"Oh, you must be Noah."

My son looked at me.

I felt him become more cautious.

"Yes," I said. "This is Noah."

She smiled at him and told us where to go.

Noah thanked her.

We followed the directions into the building.

The room was larger than I expected.

There were rows of chairs, flowers near the front, and a table holding small cards with guests' names.

People spoke in low voices as they settled into their places.

Noah stayed close to me.

I could feel him trying to understand where he belonged.

Then I saw Ethan.

He stood near the front, speaking with someone I didn't recognize.

He looked different in a suit.

Not unfamiliar, exactly.

Just like a version of himself I hadn't seen in a long time.

For a second, I remembered our own wedding.

The nervousness in his smile.

The way he had held my hand before we walked into the room.

The way I had believed that standing beside someone meant you would always know how to reach them.

I pushed the memory aside.

That day belonged to the past.

Ethan noticed us.

He excused himself from the conversation and walked toward Noah.

"Hey, buddy."

Noah's face changed.

He looked relieved.

"Hi, Dad."

Ethan hugged him.

It was a little awkward at first, perhaps because they hadn't seen each other in person for a while.

Then Ethan held him by the shoulders and looked at his shirt.

"You look great."

Noah smiled.

"Thanks."

Ethan glanced at me.

"Thank you for bringing him."

"You're welcome."

For a moment, we stood there without knowing what else to say.

Then Ethan turned back to Noah.

"I want you to meet a few people before everything starts."

Noah nodded.

Ethan introduced him to two relatives and a friend.

He told them Noah was his son.

Each person greeted Noah warmly.

One man asked about school.

A woman told him she liked his shirt.

Noah answered politely, but I could see him becoming overwhelmed by the attention.

Ethan noticed, too.

He lowered his voice.

"You doing okay?"

Noah nodded.

"Yes."

"We can take a break if you need one."

That was the first thing Ethan said that made me feel genuinely relieved.

He had noticed.

He hadn't simply assumed that bringing Noah into the room meant everything was fine.

Noah shook his head.

"I'm okay."

Ethan smiled.

"All right."

Then he looked at me.

"I'll make sure he knows where to sit."

I nodded.

I could have stayed beside Noah and managed every uncomfortable moment for him.

It would have been easy to do.

But Ethan was standing right there, offering to take responsibility for his own son.

So I stepped back.

Noah looked at me once before following his father.

I smiled at him.

He turned toward Ethan again.

I watched them walk toward the seating area.

For the first time that morning, I allowed myself to believe that the day might hold something good for Noah.

Not because the wedding would fix anything.

Not because the past had become less painful.

But because his father was finally standing beside him, paying attention.

And that, more than any invitation, was what my son had been waiting for.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: I Watched Ethan Introduce Noah to His New Life, and I Began to See the Difference Between Being Displayed and Being Loved

The morning of the wedding, Noah woke before his alarm.
