Dad. Maybe Lila."

He paused.

"I just want them to know that we were happy once."

I felt my eyes sting.

I turned toward the photograph.

We looked happy in it.

That was not a lie.

We had been happy on many days.

We had laughed together, raised our son, celebrated birthdays, and made plans for the future.

We had also hurt one another.

The photograph couldn't show that, but it didn't need to.

A memory didn't become false because it was incomplete.

I touched the corner of the page.

"You don't have to bring it to prove anything," I said.

"I know."

He closed the album.

"But I'd like to."

I thought about the wedding invitation.

Ethan's name beside Lila's.

The gold letters.

The formal announcement of a new beginning.

Maybe Noah wanted his photograph to sit beside that announcement, not as a challenge, but as a reminder that his life had not begun with the wedding.

He had a history.

He had a mother and a father.

He had memories that would remain his, regardless of what happened next.

"You can bring it," I said.

Noah smiled.

He carefully removed the photograph from the plastic sleeve, then slid it into a small envelope to protect it.

I watched him place it inside his schoolbag.

For the rest of the evening, I tried not to think too much about the wedding.

I prepared dinner.

I checked Noah's homework.

I washed the dishes and wiped the kitchen counter.

The ordinary tasks gave me something to do with my hands.

But when the house was quiet, I returned to the thought I had been avoiding.

I was afraid of seeing Ethan move on.

Not because I wanted him back.

Not because I believed we could repair the marriage if only he changed his mind.

I was afraid because his wedding would make the ending visible.

Until then, our divorce had been a collection of private moments.

An empty place at the table.

A phone call that never came.

A conversation about school that I handled alone.

A family photograph that stayed in an album instead of being replaced by a new one.

The wedding would bring all of those changes into one room.

People would see Ethan begin another marriage.

They would see Lila standing beside him.

They would see Noah there, dressed neatly, trying to understand where he fit.

And I would have to accept that the world could celebrate a new beginning without pausing to acknowledge what had ended.

That was the part I feared.

Not losing Ethan.

Losing the last excuse to pretend that the old life might return in some recognizable form.

I sat at the kitchen table and looked at the invitation.

For months, I had focused on what Ethan might want other people to see.

A devoted father.

A man who included his son.

A family that had adjusted gracefully to change.

Perhaps I had been unfair.

Perhaps he simply wanted Noah beside him because he loved him and wanted to share an important day.

Perhaps the photograph was not proof of anything.

It could just be a photograph.

I needed to leave room for that possibility.

The next morning, I spoke to Noah while he ate breakfast.

"Are you still sure you want to go?"

He nodded.

"I want to see Dad."

"All right."

"And I want to take the picture."

"You can."

He ate another spoonful of cereal.

"Are you going to be okay?"

I looked at him.

There it was again.

My ten-year-old son worrying about his mother's feelings while preparing to attend his father's wedding.

I put my spoon down.

"You don't need to take care of me, Noah."

"But I don't want you to be sad."

"I might feel sad sometimes. That's okay. Grown-ups can handle their feelings."

He watched me carefully.

"Promise?"

"I promise I'll take care of myself."

He seemed satisfied, though not completely convinced.

I reached across the table and squeezed his hand.

"You just worry about being ten."

He smiled.

"That's a lot of work."

"It certainly is."

We laughed.

It was a small moment, but it felt important.

For once, we weren't discussing Ethan's wedding as though it were a problem we had to solve.

We were simply sharing breakfast.

After Noah left for school, I returned the invitation to its envelope.

I placed it in the drawer, beside the other things I had decided not to throw away.

Then I stood in the kitchen for a moment.

The house was quiet.

The wedding was approaching.

Nothing about it had become easier simply because I had learned to name my fear.

But I no longer needed to pretend that I was angry when I was actually grieving.

I could wish Ethan well without wanting his life.

I could help Noah attend the wedding without pretending that it didn't hurt.

And I could let my son love his father without asking that love to prove anything about me.

That was the choice I could make.

The rest belonged to the people who would be standing in the room when the ceremony began.

Click here to continue reading: PART 9: The Morning of Ethan’s Wedding, Noah Packed an Old Photograph, and I Finally Understood What He Was Afraid of Losing

The week before the wedding, I took the invitation out of its envelope and placed it on the kitchen table.
