You pushed the rest onto your father's plate."

Noah laughed.

"Did he eat it?"

"Every bit."

For a while, we were simply looking at photographs.

Then he found one taken at a family gathering several years earlier.

Ethan stood beside me, his arm around my waist.

Noah was between us, holding a small toy car.

All three of us were smiling at the camera.

He touched the edge of the photograph.

"Could we take another one like this?"

I looked at him.

"With your dad?"

He nodded.

"Maybe at the wedding."

I felt something tighten inside me.

It wasn't jealousy exactly.

It was the uncomfortable feeling of seeing a past version of yourself preserved in a picture while knowing that the life around it had disappeared.

"That might be difficult," I said carefully.

"Because you and Dad aren't married anymore?"

"Yes."

He looked at the picture again.

"But we're still his family."

I didn't know how to answer without making the word family seem smaller than it was.

"You're his family," I said. "And I'm your family. Things don't stop mattering just because they change."

Noah considered that.

"Could we all stand together for one picture?"

I looked at his face.

He wasn't asking me to get back together with Ethan.

He wasn't trying to undo the divorce.

He wanted proof that the years before the separation still counted.

"Maybe," I said. "We can ask your dad."

He carefully returned the photograph to the album.

Then he asked if he could keep looking.

I stayed with him until we reached the last page.

There were fewer photographs from the final year of our marriage.

I noticed that before Noah did.

We had stopped taking pictures together long before we stopped living together.

At the time, I hadn't thought much about it.

We were busy.

We had work and bills and school schedules.

We had grown tired of pretending to be cheerful whenever someone brought out a camera.

The absence of photographs had seemed like a small thing.

Now it felt like a record of how gradually we had withdrawn from one another.

Noah closed the album.

"Do you think Dad still has these?"

"I don't know."

"Maybe he does."

"Maybe."

He placed the album back in the box.

That afternoon, I sent Ethan a message about Noah's request.

I kept it simple.

Noah wondered whether you could take a family photograph together at the wedding.

Ethan answered several minutes later.

He said he would like that.

I read the reply and felt a cautious sense of relief.

At least he hadn't dismissed the idea.

I told Noah.

His face brightened.

"Really?"

"That's what he said."

He returned to the album and found the old photograph again.

He studied our expressions, then held it against the new wedding invitation.

The contrast was strange.

In the picture, Ethan looked younger.

So did I.

Noah was small enough to fit between us without stretching his arms.

On the invitation, Ethan's name stood beside Lila's in polished gold letters.

Both images were real.

Neither could explain the other.

"Will Lila be in the new picture?" Noah asked.

I hadn't considered that possibility.

"If she wants to be."

He nodded.

"That would be okay."

I watched him place the photograph back inside the album.

He wasn't asking for the past to return exactly as it had been.

He was trying to find a way to carry it into the future.

I wished adults were always as honest about what they wanted.

Later that evening, Ethan called.

He asked whether Noah had been talking about the wedding.

I told him about the photographs.

Ethan was quiet for a moment.

"That's a good idea," he said.

"I think it matters to him."

"It matters to me, too."

I wanted to believe him.

"Then make sure you follow through."

"I will."

We talked briefly about the wedding arrangements.

Ethan said Lila's family would be attending, along with friends and other relatives.

He sounded busy, but not unhappy.

I asked whether he had thought about where Noah would sit.

"We're working on that."

"Please don't leave him wondering until the last minute."

"I won't."

I almost asked whether he wanted to talk about anything besides the wedding.

I almost asked whether he remembered the photographs in the album.

Instead, I said good night.

After the call, I went to Noah's room.

He was arranging his schoolbooks on the desk.

"Did Dad say anything else?" he asked.

"He said he liked the idea of a photograph."

Noah smiled.

"Good."

He returned to his books.

I stood in the doorway for a moment.

I had once believed that the most important thing I could give my son was a stable home.

I still believed that mattered.

But stability wasn't the same as keeping everything unchanged.

Noah needed room to remember his father as the man who had carried him on his shoulders and eaten the frosting-covered cake.

He also needed room to recognize the man who was getting married again.

Those were not two different people.

They were parts of the same person.

My job wasn't to erase one version to make the other easier to accept.

My job was to help Noah see the whole picture without believing he had to approve of every part of it.

That night, I put the photograph album back in the closet.

The wedding invitation remained on the coffee table.

For the first time, it didn't look like something that had arrived to replace our old life.

It looked like the beginning of a day we hadn't yet learned how to understand.

Click here to continue reading: PART 7: I Had Thought the Wedding Was About Ethan Starting Over, Until Noah Asked What His Father Would Remember About Them

The following weekend, Noah asked if he could look through our old photographs.
