But I wouldn't leave you somewhere you felt unsafe or uncomfortable."

He seemed to accept that.

Then he asked whether he could call Ethan.

"Of course."

Noah picked up his phone.

He stared at the screen for a moment before pressing the contact.

I returned to the kitchen, giving him as much privacy as I could while remaining close enough to help if he needed me.

I heard Ethan answer.

Noah spoke quietly.

"Hey, Dad."

There was a pause.

Then Noah asked whether he would have to sit with Lila's family at the wedding.

I stopped moving.

Ethan answered, but I couldn't make out the words.

Noah listened.

"Okay."

Another pause.

"Will you sit with me?"

I felt the question in my chest.

It was such a small thing to ask.

Not whether he could attend.

Not whether he would be included in photographs.

Not whether his father would introduce him proudly to the guests.

He wanted to know whether Ethan would sit beside him.

I heard Ethan speaking again.

Noah's shoulders relaxed a little.

"All right."

They talked for another minute.

Then Noah ended the call and set the phone down.

I returned to the table.

"What did he say?"

"He said we'll figure out the seats."

"That sounds reasonable."

Noah nodded.

"He said he wants me there."

I sat beside him.

"How do you feel about that?"

He thought for a while.

"I want to see him."

There it was.

Not a complicated answer.

Not an attempt to make me happy.

Just a boy who missed his father.

I put my arm around him.

"Then that's important."

"But I don't want him to think I'm happy that he's getting married."

"You can be happy to see your dad without feeling happy about everything that's happening."

Noah looked at me.

"Can I do that?"

"Yes."

He seemed relieved.

I wished I had understood that sooner.

I had been so concerned about protecting him from pressure that I had nearly overlooked the simple truth that he wanted a relationship with his father.

He didn't need me to tell him what to feel.

He needed me to tell him that his feelings didn't have to agree with one another.

That evening, I called Ethan.

I told him Noah was considering attending the wedding and had asked whether his father would sit with him.

Ethan said he understood.

"I want him to feel included," he told me.

"Then make sure he knows where he belongs."

"I will."

I waited.

I thought he might ask how Noah was doing.

Instead, he asked whether I could bring our son to the venue.

I said I could.

We discussed the time and the practical details.

The conversation was polite.

It was also strangely familiar.

Ethan had a way of turning emotional matters into arrangements. Once the time and place were settled, he seemed to believe the difficult part had been handled.

I used to let that happen.

This time, I asked one more question.

"What do you want Noah to understand about the wedding?"

Ethan went quiet.

"What do you mean?"

"I mean, what do you want him to know? He's ten. He's trying to understand what this means for him."

"I want him to know that I love him."

"Then tell him that."

"I did."

"Tell him again."

He exhaled.

"I don't know why you're making this sound so difficult."

I looked at the invitation lying on the table.

"I'm not trying to make it difficult, Ethan. I'm trying to make sure he doesn't think he has to pretend to be happy for your sake."

There was a long silence.

Finally, Ethan said, "I don't want him to pretend."

I believed that he meant it.

I also knew that wanting something and understanding how to achieve it were different things.

"Good," I said.

We ended the call shortly afterward.

Noah was in the living room when I joined him.

He had put the invitation back into its envelope and tucked it inside a book on the coffee table.

"Are you going to keep that there?" I asked.

He nodded.

"I don't want to lose it."

I sat beside him.

"Then keep it wherever you like."

He leaned against me.

For once, I didn't ask another question.

I let him sit there, holding on to the things he could understand while the rest of his life changed around him.

Click here to continue reading: PART 6: The Photograph Ethan Wanted Had Not Been Taken Yet, but I Was Beginning to Understand Why It Mattered So Much

On Monday morning, Noah asked whether he could keep the invitation.
