But I wanted to feel relieved.”

“You can be relieved about the records and still be sad about the marriage.”

I closed my eyes.

It was so obvious when he said it.

I had been expecting one kind of relief to erase every other feeling.

It did not work that way.

The financial work had helped me regain a sense of control.

It had not restored the future I had imagined with Landon.

It had not made the betrayal less painful.

And it had not answered every question I still had about why our relationship had ended the way it had.

My father did not try to solve those things.

He let me talk.

That was what I needed.

When we finished the call, I made breakfast and sat at the kitchen table.

I did not open the financial folder.

I did not need to review the records again that morning.

Instead, I looked at the ordinary things around me.

The coffee mug.

The chair across from mine.

The small scratch in the table.

I had spent so much time looking at those objects and remembering Landon that I had forgotten they were also part of my own life.

The house belonged to my present, not just to my memories.

I could make new routines.

I could decide what to keep.

I could change the things that no longer worked for me.

I did not have to do any of it immediately.

That afternoon, I sorted through the mail and put the financial documents in a safe place.

I kept the records I needed.

I set aside papers that required further attention.

I made sure I knew where everything was.

Then I closed the drawer.

I was not going to keep reopening the same questions simply because worry had become familiar.

If a new issue arose, I would deal with it.

Until then, I was allowed to live.

Later that week, Landon sent a message about the remaining practical arrangements.

I read it and answered what I could.

The conversation was brief.

We did not discuss the marriage.

We did not discuss the woman he had chosen over me.

We dealt with the matter at hand.

When the exchange ended, I felt a small sadness.

There had been a time when I would have told him about my day afterward.

I would have asked what he was doing for dinner.

I would have expected to hear his voice again before bed.

Those habits did not disappear simply because the relationship had ended.

I put the phone down and let the sadness pass without turning it into a reason to contact him again.

That evening, I went for a walk.

The air was warm.

People were sitting on their porches and talking across their yards.

I watched them as I moved along the sidewalk.

I had once thought security meant knowing that someone else would help me handle whatever went wrong.

I still believed in sharing responsibilities.

I still believed in trusting people.

But I no longer believed that love required me to become dependent on someone else's understanding.

I could share a life without giving up my ability to make decisions.

I could accept help without handing over control.

And I could trust someone while remaining willing to ask questions.

Those lessons had cost me more than I wished they had.

I was going to keep them anyway.

When I returned home, I checked the door and turned on the kitchen light.

The folder was in the drawer.

The old black card was with the records.

Everything was where I had left it.

I made tea and sat at the table.

For the first time in weeks, I did not feel the need to examine the contents of the drawer.

I knew what was there.

I knew what I had done.

I knew what remained my responsibility.

That was enough.

Click here to continue reading: PART 20: My Father Had Stopped Me Outside the Courthouse to Protect More Than My Money, and I Finally Understood What He Wanted Me to Carry Forward

I thought I would feel finished when the outstanding questions were answered.
