18 – My Father Had Never Asked Me to Hate Landon, Only to Stop Letting Love Make Decisions That Required Clear Eyes

The response arrived the next afternoon.

I was in the kitchen when my phone vibrated.

I had been sorting through the mail and had not expected anything important.

When I saw the notification, I put the envelopes down and opened the message.

It contained the clarification I had requested.

I read it carefully.

Then I opened the records I had already gathered and compared the information.

I wanted to be sure I understood what had been answered and what still needed attention.

This time, I did not rush.

I took notes.

I checked the dates.

I made sure I was not assuming something the document did not actually say.

When I finished, I could account for the outstanding question I had been waiting to resolve.

I marked it complete.

The feeling that followed was not excitement.

It was relief.

I had spent weeks carrying that one unresolved item around in my head.

Now I could put it down.

I saved the response and placed the printed copy with the other documents.

Then I called my father.

“I got the answer.”

He asked me to explain it.

I did.

He asked whether the response supported the conclusion I had recorded.

I checked the document once more.

“Yes.”

“Then keep the record and move on.”

I laughed softly.

“You really do have one answer for everything.”

“No. I have a few answers that keep proving useful.”

I smiled.

We talked for a little longer.

Before hanging up, I thanked him for staying patient with me.

He said I had done most of the work myself.

I knew he was trying to give me credit.

But I also knew that without him, I might have continued avoiding the questions until they became harder to answer.

That evening, I reviewed the folder from the beginning.

I checked the completed items and the remaining notes.

The records were organized.

The account changes had been documented.

The outstanding questions I had identified had been answered or had a clear next step.

I could finally see the difference between the way I had approached my finances before the divorce and the way I approached them now.

Before, I had depended on Landon to tell me when a matter was settled.

Now I could review the information and decide whether I understood it.

That was not a guarantee that I would never make a mistake.

It was a better way to begin.

I took the old black card out of its envelope.

For weeks, I had treated it as a reminder of everything I did not understand.

Now it was simply a card associated with an arrangement I had needed to review.

I placed it with the relevant documents.

I still needed to handle the account according to its actual terms, but I no longer felt compelled to imagine hidden meanings.

I had records.

I had notes.

I knew what I had verified.

That was enough for the next decision.

I put everything away and sat by the window.

My father had never told me that Landon was a bad person.

He had never demanded that I stop loving him.

He had asked me to protect my accounts and understand my responsibilities.

I had heard that warning as an accusation because I was still trying to defend my marriage.

Even after the divorce, I had struggled to separate financial caution from emotional betrayal.

If I checked something, I worried that I was being unfair.

If I asked a question, I wondered whether I was being difficult.

If I waited for documentation, I felt as though I were refusing to trust someone I had once loved.

I no longer believed those things were the same.

Trust did not require me to ignore the facts.

Fairness did not require me to abandon my judgment.

And love, even the love that remained after a marriage ended, did not give another person the right to make decisions for me without my understanding.

I thought about the woman I had been outside the courtroom.

She had been exhausted.

She had been hurt.

She had wanted the day to stop asking things of her.

I wished I could tell her that the next few weeks would be difficult, but that she would learn how to handle them.

I wished I could tell her that changing a PIN would not heal her heart.

It would simply give her one practical thing she could do while the rest of her life felt uncertain.

I would tell her to let her father help.

I would tell her to keep the records.

And I would tell her that asking questions did not make her disloyal.

It made her responsible.

The following morning, I sent Landon a brief update.

I told him the outstanding clarification had arrived and that I had completed my review of that item.

I did not make claims about matters the records did not establish.

I did not use the message to revisit the marriage.

I kept it factual.

He replied with a short acknowledgment.

I put the phone away.

There was no argument.

No confession.

No dramatic revelation.

Just an exchange about unfinished business.

I had expected the end of this process to feel bigger.

Instead, it felt quiet.

I closed the laptop and put the papers in the folder.

Then I returned the folder to the drawer.

The old black card was inside its envelope.

I had begun this process believing that the card might represent something I had missed.

What mattered more was what it had forced me to examine.

I had been trusting the comfort of familiarity instead of making sure I understood the arrangements that affected me.

I could not change that history.

I could stop repeating it.
