17 – I Had Learned to Protect My Accounts, but I Still Needed to Understand What the End of My Marriage Had Left Unfinished

The rain had stopped by the time I woke up.

I made coffee and went straight to the kitchen table.

The folder was still in the drawer.

I took it out, set it beside my laptop, and checked the outstanding list.

One item remained unresolved.

I had been waiting for clarification, and I had already followed up once.

I checked the date of that request.

Then I decided to follow up again.

There was no reason to be dramatic about it.

I needed information.

I was entitled to ask for it.

I sent a brief message, saved the confirmation, and returned to the rest of my morning.

I no longer needed to spend the next hour wondering what the delay meant.

It might have a simple explanation.

It might take another request to resolve.

Until I knew, I had no reason to decide anything else.

I had learned that lesson slowly.

My father had tried to teach it to me long before the divorce.

I had simply been too comfortable with the way Landon handled things to understand why it mattered.

That afternoon, I reviewed the account records again.

The personal accounts were familiar now.

I understood the cards I used, the access changes I had made, and the questions I had already answered.

The business account still required attention to certain details, but I knew where the information came from and how to request clarification.

I had stopped treating the whole collection of accounts as one enormous problem.

Each arrangement had its own facts.

Each question had its own answer.

That made the work manageable.

My phone rang while I was checking the dates on the latest documents.

It was my father.

“How are things going?”

“I'm waiting on one last clarification.”

“Have you followed up?”

“This morning.”

“Then give them time to respond.”

I smiled.

“I knew you were going to say that.”

“Because it's still good advice.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“I think I'm getting better at waiting.”

“You sound better.”

I looked toward the window.

I did feel better.

Not because everything had been resolved, but because I no longer felt that uncertainty made me helpless.

I knew what I had done.

I knew what remained.

And I knew what I would do if the answer did not arrive.

We talked for a few minutes about ordinary things.

Then we ended the call.

I returned to my notes and corrected a date I had written down incorrectly.

It was a small mistake.

I fixed it and moved on.

A few hours later, Landon sent a message asking whether I had finished reviewing the remaining arrangements.

I told him I was waiting for the last clarification and would update him when I had it.

He asked how long that might take.

I could not give him an exact date.

I said so.

There was a time when I would have invented a reasonable estimate simply because I disliked leaving a question unanswered.

I would have wanted him to believe I had everything under control.

Now I understood that an honest answer was better than a convenient promise.

He replied that he would wait.

I put the phone down.

The exchange was brief.

No argument followed.

I had spent weeks imagining that every boundary would create conflict.

Some conversations were uncomfortable.

Others were simply conversations.

That evening, I took the old black card out of the envelope.

I had not used it since the divorce.

I checked the information I had gathered about the account and reviewed the access changes I had made.

I still needed the final clarification before deciding how to handle the remaining arrangement.

I did not assume that the card itself meant anything beyond what the records showed.

I returned it to the envelope and placed it beside the folder.

Then I made dinner.

I ate at the kitchen table and watched the light fade outside the window.

For a moment, I thought about Landon sitting across from me during the early years of our marriage.

We used to eat there after work.

Sometimes we talked about money.

Sometimes we talked about nothing important.

I remembered him explaining a purchase and me nodding while I finished my meal.

I had trusted him because I loved him.

I had also trusted him because I did not want every practical decision to become another thing I had to manage.

There was nothing wrong with wanting a partner to share the burden.

The mistake was allowing myself to become unfamiliar with the things that affected my own future.

I could admit that without turning every memory into evidence against him.

After dinner, I washed the dishes and put the folder away.

The following morning, I checked my messages.

There was still no response to the outstanding request.

I did not panic.

I made a note to follow up if the delay continued and went about my day.

I paid the bills that were due.

I answered an ordinary email.

I bought groceries.

I called my father to ask about a recipe my mother used to make.

For a few hours, the divorce was not the center of my attention.

That felt like progress.

I was beginning to understand that protecting myself did not mean remaining on guard every minute.

It meant making sensible arrangements and returning to the rest of my life.

By evening, I had not received the missing information.

I checked the list once more and left the item marked as outstanding.

Then I closed the folder.

I was not going to invent an ending because I was tired of waiting.

I would finish what I could.

I would ask for what I still needed.

And when the answer arrived, I would decide what it meant.
