15 – The Records Were Teaching Me to Be Patient, but Patience No Longer Meant Waiting Quietly for Someone Else to Decide What I Needed to Know

By the middle of the following week, I had developed a habit of checking the outstanding list before opening my messages.

It was a small change.

I wanted to know what needed my attention before Landon's name or anyone else's request could determine the direction of my morning.

I sat at the kitchen table with a fresh cup of coffee.

The folder lay open beside my laptop.

I reviewed the remaining items and marked the ones that had been completed.

Then I checked the messages.

There was a response to one of my requests.

I opened it and read through the information carefully.

It answered part of the question.

The rest required another clarification.

I wrote down what I had learned and prepared a follow-up.

The process was becoming familiar.

I no longer felt the same rush of anxiety when a document arrived.

I could read it, compare it with the existing records, and decide what needed to happen next.

That did not mean I understood everything.

It meant I had stopped treating confusion as a reason to hand the whole problem to someone else.

I called my father after I finished the follow-up.

He asked whether I had made progress.

I explained what the new information established.

He asked whether I had kept a copy.

“Yes.”

“And the follow-up?”

“Sent.”

“Then you've done what you can for now.”

I smiled.

“You say that a lot.”

“Because you keep trying to finish things before the information is available.”

I could not deny it.

I wanted the uncertainty to end.

I wanted to close the folder, put the divorce behind me, and stop wondering whether I had missed something important.

But wanting an answer did not make one arrive sooner.

I was learning that patience could be an active choice.

I could keep the records organized.

I could follow up when appropriate.

I could continue managing the parts of my life that did not depend on anyone else's response.

I did not have to sit still while I waited.

That afternoon, I paid my ordinary bills and reviewed the balances in the accounts I used.

I made sure the changes I had made after the divorce were still in place.

I checked the access settings I could review and kept a note of anything that needed confirmation.

Then I closed the banking apps.

I did not keep opening them to see whether the numbers had changed.

I was learning to check with a purpose rather than out of fear.

The distinction mattered.

Later, I received a message from Landon.

He wanted to know whether I had heard anything new.

I told him that I had received partial information and was still waiting for clarification.

He replied that he hoped we could finish soon.

I understood the feeling.

I wanted to finish, too.

But I could not make an unfinished question disappear by pretending it had been answered.

I replied that I would update him when I had the remaining information.

Then I set the phone aside.

I did not feel guilty.

That surprised me.

For years, I had been uncomfortable whenever someone had to wait for me.

I had wanted to be the person who made things easy.

I had thought that being dependable meant responding quickly and finding a way to say yes whenever possible.

Now I understood that dependability also meant giving an accurate answer.

Sometimes that required time.

Sometimes it required admitting that I did not know.

And sometimes it meant disappointing someone who wanted a quicker response.

None of those things automatically made me unreasonable.

That evening, I found myself thinking about my father's career.

He had spent years examining financial records that other people wanted him to interpret in their favor.

He had learned to separate what the documents showed from what someone wanted them to show.

I had always respected that about him.

I had simply never imagined that I would need to apply the same discipline to my own life.

I was not investigating a crime.

I was reviewing my finances after a divorce.

The work did not need to become anything larger than that.

Still, the principle was the same.

I needed to know what the records supported.

I needed to recognize what remained uncertain.

And I needed to avoid making a conclusion just because it would be emotionally convenient.

The next morning, I received another response.

It clarified one of the details I had been waiting for.

I compared it with the existing information and updated my notes.

The answer was useful.

It did not resolve every outstanding question.

I marked the completed item and moved to the next one.

By lunchtime, I had made progress on two more tasks.

I prepared something to eat and sat beside the window.

The folder was closed.

My phone was on the counter.

I realized I had gone several hours without checking whether Landon had replied.

That had once seemed impossible.

I had spent so much of the early divorce period anticipating his next message that I had allowed it to occupy my attention even when nothing was happening.

Now I was beginning to reclaim that attention.

I could wait without worrying every minute.

I could let an unanswered message remain unanswered.

I could have an ordinary afternoon without treating silence as a problem I had to solve.

That evening, my father called.

I told him I had completed the latest checks.

He asked how I felt.

“Less frightened,” I said.

“Good.”

“Not because I know everything. Because I know what to do when I don't.”

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he said, “That's the point.”

I looked at the folder.

I had thought his warning outside the courthouse was about protecting money.

It was about that, certainly.

But it was also about protecting my ability to make decisions when I was hurt, tired, and uncertain.

He had wanted me to keep control of the things I could control.

The rest would have to be handled one question at a time.

Before bed, I reviewed the list once more.

There were still outstanding items.

I left them marked as outstanding.

I did not write an explanation I could not support.

I did not fill the empty spaces with guesses.

Then I closed the folder and put it away.

For the first time, waiting for an answer did not feel like surrender.

It felt like a decision I had made for myself.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: I Had Once Believed That Trust Meant Never Needing Proof, but the Quiet Work After My Divorce Was Teaching Me a Different Way to Live

By the middle of the following week, I had developed a habit of checking the outstanding list before opening my messages.
