13 – I Had Finally Learned to Read the Records for Myself, but I Still Had to Decide What to Do When Landon Wanted My Trust Back

The first message from Landon that morning was about the remaining arrangements.

I read it while standing beside the kitchen counter, waiting for the coffee machine to finish.

He wanted to know when I expected to have everything settled.

There was no explanation attached.

Just the question.

I looked at the folder in the drawer.

A few weeks earlier, I would have felt pressured to give him a date, even if I did not have enough information to make a promise.

I would have wanted him to know I was cooperating.

I would have worried that a delay might make me look difficult.

Instead, I finished making my coffee before I answered.

I told him I was working through the remaining records and would provide an update when I could give him an accurate one.

Then I put the phone down.

I did not feel triumphant.

I felt normal.

That was new.

I had begun to understand that I did not have to treat every request from my former husband as an emergency.

Some matters needed prompt attention.

Others required careful review.

The difference depended on the facts, not on how quickly Landon wanted an answer.

I opened the folder and checked the list.

Several items were complete.

A few still needed clarification.

I reviewed the notes from my most recent calls and made sure I had not overlooked anything.

Then I opened the latest documents on my laptop.

I had learned to take my time with them.

I read each section, compared the details, and wrote down anything I could not explain confidently.

I did not assume that a complicated entry was suspicious.

I also did not assume that a familiar name meant I understood the arrangement.

That balance had taken me longer to learn than I wanted to admit.

Around noon, I received a response to one of the outstanding requests.

It clarified a detail I had been waiting to confirm.

I read the response twice and compared it with the earlier records.

The information was consistent.

I marked the question as answered.

Then I saved the document in the folder on my computer and placed the printed copy with the others.

It was a small piece of work.

But it was work I had completed myself.

I called my father to tell him.

He listened while I explained what the document established.

When I finished, he asked whether I had recorded the date and saved the response.

“Yes.”

“Then you're doing what you need to do.”

I smiled.

“I was hoping you'd say something more exciting.”

“Would you prefer that I find something wrong?”

“No.”

“Then I'll stick with the good news.”

I laughed.

For once, the conversation ended without another warning or another task.

I appreciated that.

My father had been patient with me, but I knew he was not going to manage every detail forever.

He had helped me get started.

The rest was my responsibility.

That afternoon, I reviewed the remaining arrangements without calling him for assistance.

I was not trying to prove anything.

I simply wanted to see how much I could handle independently.

When I reached a question I could not answer, I wrote it down.

I did not pretend to know.

I did not feel ashamed.

I would request the information when I needed it.

By evening, I had made progress on two more items.

I put the documents away and prepared dinner.

The house was quiet, but the quiet no longer seemed to demand that I fill it with worries.

I ate at the kitchen table.

Afterward, I washed my plate and wiped the counter.

Then I sat down with a book.

I read several pages before checking my phone.

There was another message from Landon.

He asked whether I could confirm that the remaining arrangements were being handled.

I read the question carefully.

He was asking for confirmation, but I had not finished reviewing everything.

I could not honestly say that all the matters were settled.

So I told him what had been completed and explained that I was still waiting for clarification on the remaining points.

I kept the response factual.

I did not accuse him of rushing me.

I did not apologize for taking the time to check.

He replied that he understood.

I put the phone away.

For years, I had believed that being a good wife meant making things easier for my husband whenever I could.

There was nothing wrong with helping someone.

The problem was that I had sometimes treated my own questions as an inconvenience I should remove before he noticed them.

I could see the cost of that habit now.

It had left me feeling unprepared at exactly the moment when I needed to make independent decisions.

I did not want to repeat it.

The next morning, I found myself thinking about the courthouse again.

I remembered the cold bench.

The papers in my hand.

The pale circle on my finger.

I remembered how angry I had been when my father insisted that I change the PINs.

I had wanted comfort.

He had given me a task.

At the time, I thought he had misunderstood what I needed.

Now I could see that he had recognized something I could not.

I was so overwhelmed by the loss of my marriage that I might have allowed the practical parts of my life to remain in someone else's hands.

He had given me something concrete to do before the grief could make every decision feel impossible.

I was grateful.

I was also sad that it had taken a crisis for me to understand his point.

I made coffee and opened the folder again.

The old black card was still in its envelope.

I took it out and examined the account information associated with it.

I had no new evidence that the card had been misused.

I had no reason to invent a story about it.

I simply needed to make sure I understood the account and handled the remaining access questions correctly.

I put the card away.

Then I updated my list.

There were still things to finish.

But I no longer felt that I had to solve everything before I could move forward with my life.

I could do the work one step at a time.

And I could let the answers determine what happened next.

Click here to continue reading: PART 14: When I Stopped Trying to Make Every Conversation Comfortable, I Discovered That
