If I get stuck, I'll call you.”

“That's a good plan.”

We talked for another few minutes.

Before hanging up, he reminded me to keep the records together and avoid making decisions based on incomplete information.

I smiled.

“I know, Dad.”

“I know you know.”

Then he ended the call.

I sat quietly for a moment.

My father had been the person who stopped me outside the courthouse.

He had seen me standing there with the divorce papers in my hand, too overwhelmed to think about anything beyond the marriage that had just ended.

He had not told me that my life was ruined.

He had not told me that Landon had definitely done something wrong.

He had told me to change my PINs.

At the time, I had thought he was making a terrible day even harder.

Now I understood that he had given me something practical to do when everything else felt beyond my control.

I could not undo the divorce.

I could not change the way Landon had treated me during the final months of our marriage.

I could not rewrite the decisions I had made before I understood what I needed to know.

But I could protect my access to my accounts.

I could request the records.

I could ask questions.

I could stop signing or confirming things simply because someone expected me to.

The first steps had been small.

They had also been important.

That afternoon, I went through the remaining documents on my own.

I checked the dates.

I compared the information.

I corrected one note where I had written down a detail incorrectly.

Then I saved the updated version and put the printed pages in order.

I did not feel frightened by the work.

I felt responsible for it.

That was a different feeling.

Later, I found the old black card while looking for a receipt.

I took it from the envelope and studied it.

The card had become a reminder of the way I had allowed familiarity to replace understanding.

Landon had always treated it as something he could use whenever he wanted.

I had allowed that because it seemed easier than discussing the details.

Now I knew that the account needed to be handled according to its actual terms, not according to the habits we had developed during the marriage.

I put the card back in the envelope.

There was still information I needed before I could make a final decision about the remaining arrangements.

I would get that information when it became available.

I did not need to invent an answer before then.

That evening, I called my father again.

Not because I had a new financial question.

I wanted to thank him.

He sounded surprised when I said it.

“For what?”

“For making me do this when I didn't want to.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“I didn't want you to be frightened.”

“I know.”

“I wanted you to have choices.”

I looked around the kitchen.

The table was clear.

The folder was put away.

My laptop was closed.

For the first time in weeks, the room did not feel like a place where I was trying to solve a problem I could not understand.

It felt like my kitchen.

I thought about what my father had said.

Choices.

That was what I had lost sight of during the final months of my marriage.

I had believed that keeping the relationship intact required me to accept certain explanations and avoid certain disagreements.

I had treated asking questions as a threat to the peace between us.

But the peace had not protected me from the divorce.

And avoiding the questions had not made the financial arrangements easier to understand afterward.

I had been trying to preserve a sense of security by refusing to examine the things that supported it.

I could see that now.

“Dad,” I said, “I think I finally understand why you were so worried.”

“I'm glad.”

“I thought you were telling me not to trust him.”

“I was telling you not to stop trusting yourself.”

I closed my eyes.

That was the sentence I needed.

Not because it answered every question about Landon.

Because it helped me understand what I needed to do next.

We talked for a few more minutes.

Then I wished him goodnight.

I put the phone down and sat at the table.

I did not know whether the remaining financial questions would reveal anything more important.

I did not know how Landon would respond when I finished reviewing the arrangements.

I did know that I could face those questions without abandoning my own judgment.

I could be fair without being passive.

I could be cautious without being cruel.

And I could accept help without handing someone else the responsibility for my life.

Before bed, I opened the drawer one last time.

The folder was inside.

The envelope was beside it.

I placed the latest notes on top and closed the drawer.

Then I turned off the kitchen light.

The marriage was over.

The work of understanding what remained was not.

But for the first time since the judge had ended our marriage, I felt capable of handling what came next.

Click
