10 – My Father Had Taught Me to Follow the Records, but I Was Only Now Learning How Difficult It Was to Follow Them Without Fear

The next morning, I received an update about one of the records I had requested.

It was not a dramatic discovery.

It was simply information I had been waiting for.

I opened the document at the kitchen table and read it carefully.

Then I compared it with the notes I had already made.

I could confirm part of the arrangement.

Another detail still needed clarification.

I marked the difference and added a question to the list.

That was all.

No revelation.

No sudden answer to every concern.

Just one more piece of information.

A month earlier, I might have sent the document to Landon and asked him what it meant.

I might have accepted his response without reading the rest.

This time, I tried to understand it myself before asking anyone else.

I read the relevant section again.

Then I wrote down what I understood in plain language.

When I reached a point where I could not explain the terms confidently, I stopped.

I did not guess.

I called the institution responsible for the record and asked for clarification.

The representative explained what the document covered and what additional information would be needed to answer my remaining question.

I took notes.

When the call ended, I sat quietly for a moment.

I had done something that should have been ordinary.

Yet it felt like a small victory.

Not because I had uncovered anything.

Because I had asked a question and waited for an answer instead of relying on Landon's confidence to settle it for me.

My father called later that afternoon.

I told him about the document.

He asked what I had learned.

I explained it as clearly as I could.

He listened, then asked whether the explanation matched the written record.

I checked my notes.

“Yes.”

“Then keep both.”

I saved the document and the notes from the call.

It was becoming a habit.

A useful one.

For the rest of the afternoon, I worked through the remaining items.

I was beginning to see the difference between a complicated financial arrangement and a suspicious one.

Something could be difficult to understand without being wrong.

Something could sound perfectly ordinary without being fully explained.

I needed to know which situation I was dealing with before making any judgment.

That evening, I found an old notebook in the desk drawer.

It belonged to me.

I had used it during the earlier years of my marriage to record household expenses and plans for renovations.

Several pages contained figures in my handwriting.

Other pages had short notes Landon had added when we discussed purchases together.

I sat on the floor beside the desk and flipped through it.

There were entries for furniture.

There were calculations for a holiday.

There was a list of repairs we had planned for the house.

I remembered most of those things.

What surprised me was how often I had written a question and then crossed it out after Landon told me he had handled the matter.

Sometimes he had added a brief note beside it.

Done.

Taken care of.

No need to worry.

I ran my finger over the words.

At the time, they had seemed like kindness.

Perhaps some of them had been.

I could not know what Landon had intended each time he wrote them.

But I could see what I had done in response.

I had stopped asking.

I closed the notebook and put it beside the financial folder.

I did not want to turn old memories into accusations.

I wanted to understand the habits that had left me feeling so unprepared after the divorce.

That was the work in front of me.

The following day, Landon sent another message asking whether the remaining arrangements were nearly complete.

I read it twice.

I was tempted to tell him they were.

I wanted to end the exchange.

I wanted to return to a life where his messages no longer determined how I felt about my day.

But I could not honestly say the work was finished.

So I told him that some information was still being verified and that I would respond when I had a clear answer.

He replied that he understood.

I put the phone away.

The response was ordinary.

I had no reason to treat it as a warning.

That mattered, too.

I was learning that not every message required a second meaning.

My father came over that weekend.

We reviewed the outstanding questions and the documents I had collected.

He asked me to explain what had changed since our first meeting.

I told him I understood more of the account arrangements and knew which questions remained unanswered.

He nodded.

“Do you feel more comfortable handling it?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

I looked at him.

“Do you think I should have known all this before?”

He took his time answering.

“I think you should have had a better understanding of your own financial arrangements. But knowing that now doesn't mean you have to punish yourself for not knowing it earlier.”

I lowered my eyes.

I had spent days feeling ashamed of the things I could not explain.

I had imagined my father silently judging every answer I gave.

His words made me realize that I had been doing enough judging on my own.

“I keep thinking about how easy it would have been to ask more questions,” I said.

“It probably would have been easier at the time.”

I looked up.

He did not soften the truth.

“But you can't go back and ask them now. You can ask the ones that matter today.”

I nodded slowly.

We continued reviewing the records.

When I made a mistake in my notes, I corrected it.

When I could not remember something, I marked it as uncertain.

I stopped trying to make the information look more complete than it was.

That was another kind of honesty.

By the time my father left, the folder contained a clearer record of what we had verified and what still required attention.

I put it away.

Then I returned the old notebook to the desk.

I did not want to erase the years of my marriage.

I wanted to learn from them without pretending that every good memory had been false.

Landon had been my husband.

I had loved him.

I had trusted him.

And I had allowed that trust to become a reason not to ask enough questions.

Those truths could exist together.

The divorce had changed our relationship.

It had not changed the past.

But the way I handled my future was still mine to decide.

Click here to continue reading: PART 11: I Had Stopped Treating Every Unanswered Question as Proof of Betrayal, but I Was No Longer Willing to Mistake Silence for an Answer

The next morning, I received an update about one of the records I had requested.
