It's just the honest answer.”

I looked down at the notes.

For years, I had tried to make uncertainty disappear by accepting the explanation that seemed most comfortable.

Now I was learning to leave a question unanswered until I had enough information to deal with it.

It felt slow.

It also felt fair.

To myself, and to everyone else involved.

That evening, I received a message from Landon.

He asked whether I had made progress with the remaining arrangements.

I read it while standing beside the kitchen counter.

The wording was familiar.

It reminded me of the countless times he had asked whether I had finished something he expected me to handle.

I almost replied that everything was under control.

Instead, I told him I was still reviewing the records and would respond when I had the information needed to make a decision.

I kept the message brief.

He did not answer immediately.

I set the phone down and continued preparing dinner.

For the first time, I did not feel compelled to fill the silence.

The next morning, I checked the records again.

I was not looking for evidence against Landon.

I was trying to establish what I could confirm and what still needed clarification.

That distinction had become important to me.

My father had warned me against turning fear into an accusation.

I had also begun to understand that I could not let the fear of appearing suspicious prevent me from asking ordinary questions.

Both lessons mattered.

Later that day, I found myself thinking about the years before the marriage began to fall apart.

Landon had been the person who remembered when bills were due.

He knew which documents belonged where.

He could speak confidently about an arrangement while I was still trying to understand the first page.

I had admired that ability.

I had even thanked him for taking so much responsibility.

There had been nothing inherently wrong with dividing responsibilities.

The problem was that I had allowed the division to become a reason not to learn.

I could see that now.

I did not know whether Landon had taken advantage of my trust.

I did know that I had left myself with too many questions at a time when I was already dealing with the end of my marriage.

That was enough reason to change.

By Wednesday, I had followed up on the records that remained outstanding.

I recorded the responses and kept the relevant documents together.

I did not discover anything that justified accusing Landon of wrongdoing.

I did not receive a complete answer to every question, either.

The situation remained unfinished.

I called my father and told him where things stood.

He asked whether I wanted him to come over.

I looked at the folder.

“No. I think I can handle the next steps.”

There was a brief silence.

Then he said, “All right.”

I had expected him to offer another warning.

Instead, he trusted me to continue.

That meant more than I could explain.

I was not suddenly an expert.

I was not certain of everything.

But I could identify what I needed to know, ask the appropriate questions, and keep a record of the answers.

I could do that much without waiting for someone else to take over.

That night, I opened the drawer to put away a receipt.

The envelope containing the black card was sitting beside the folder.

I touched the edge of it, then left it where it was.

I had no new information about the card.

I would not invent a meaning for it simply because I was frightened of what the past might contain.

I closed the drawer.

Then I went to bed.

I was still waiting for answers.

But I had stopped waiting for Landon to tell me when I was allowed to ask for them.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: My Father Had Taught Me to Follow the Records, but I Was Only Now Learning How Difficult It Was to Follow Them Without Fear

The first thing I learned was that being organized did not mean being finished.
