7 – When Landon Finally Answered Me, I Had to Resist the Habit of Accepting His Explanation Before I Had Checked It for Myself

Landon's message arrived late in the morning.

I was sitting at the kitchen table, reviewing the list of documents I still needed, when the phone vibrated beside my laptop.

His name appeared on the screen.

For a moment, I simply stared at it.

I had spent years recognizing his messages before I even read them.

I knew the way he wrote when he was busy.

I knew how he shortened sentences when he was impatient.

I knew how he sounded when he wanted something handled quickly but did not want to appear demanding.

Those habits had once made me feel close to him.

Now they made me cautious.

I opened the message.

He had provided some information about the arrangement he wanted me to confirm.

It was more than he had sent before, but I still needed to understand how the details connected to the records I had already gathered.

I read it once.

Then I read it again.

My first instinct was to reply that I would take care of it.

The words came to me automatically.

I had written some version of that sentence hundreds of times during our marriage.

It had been my way of ending a conversation before it became difficult.

I began typing.

Then I stopped.

The old black card was in the drawer beside the table.

I could not see it, but I knew exactly where I had put it.

I thought about the courthouse.

I thought about my father telling me to change the PINs before I did anything else.

At the time, I had been angry with him for refusing to let me have a quiet moment.

Now I understood that he had been trying to interrupt a habit.

I deleted my unfinished reply.

Instead, I opened the documents and compared the information Landon had sent with the details I already had.

Some of it was familiar.

Some of it needed clarification.

I wrote down the questions rather than guessing at the answers.

Then I sent Landon a short response asking him to explain the remaining points.

I kept the message polite.

I did not accuse him of hiding anything.

I did not mention my father's concerns.

I simply asked for information before making a decision.

After sending it, I felt the familiar discomfort return.

I wanted him to think I was reasonable.

I wanted him to believe I was being fair.

I wanted him to see that I was not trying to make the divorce harder than it already was.

But I also wanted to stop making decisions out of fear that he might be displeased with me.

Those desires did not fit together as neatly as I wished they did.

I called my father.

“I got the details.”

“Are they enough to answer your questions?”

“Some of them.”

“Then separate the questions that are answered from the ones that aren't.”

I looked at the notes.

“I've done that.”

“Good.”

I waited.

He knew I wanted more reassurance.

Instead, he asked whether I had eaten breakfast.

I looked at the untouched mug beside my laptop.

“Not yet.”

“Then do that before you spend another hour looking at the same page.”

I laughed despite myself.

My father had a way of making ordinary care sound like another practical instruction.

I made toast and ate it at the table.

When I finished, I returned to the documents with a clearer head.

I worked through the information one item at a time.

I did not find proof that Landon had done anything wrong.

I also did not find a reason to ignore the questions that remained.

The difference mattered.

By early afternoon, I had a better understanding of what I could confirm and what still needed documentation.

I sent another message asking for the missing details.

Then I put the phone away.

I was not going to spend the entire day waiting for his response.

I had other things to do.

I went through the mail, paid the bills that were due, and organized the documents that belonged to me.

It was ordinary work.

That was why it helped.

My life still contained responsibilities that had nothing to do with Landon.

I needed to remember that.

Later, I found myself standing in the kitchen with the old black card in my hand.

I had taken it out while organizing the drawer.

The card looked almost new from a distance, although the edges showed signs of use.

I turned it over.

There was nothing unusual about its appearance.

I had no new evidence about it.

I knew only that it was connected to an account I needed to understand and that Landon had treated it as though using it were his right.

I placed it back in the envelope.

I was not going to invent a story about a piece of plastic.

But I was not going to let familiarity make the decisions for me anymore.

That evening, Landon responded to my questions.

He clarified part of the arrangement and said he would provide the remaining information when he had it available.

I read his message and set the phone down.

I did not immediately answer.

I considered whether I needed to.

There was no question I had to respond to that evening.

There was no decision I needed to make before bed.

So I left it.

The silence felt uncomfortable at first.

Then it became ordinary.

I ate dinner.

I washed the dishes.

I watched half an episode of a show I had been meaning to finish.

For the first time in several days, I did not check my phone every few minutes.

I did not feel triumphant.

I felt tired.

But the tiredness was different from the helplessness I had felt outside the courthouse.

I had begun to understand that I could leave a message unanswered without the world falling apart.

I could ask for clarification without being cruel.

I could take time to read a document without proving that I distrusted everyone.

Those were lessons I should have learned years earlier.

I could not change that now.

Before bed, I opened the folder and added a note about the information Landon had provided.

I recorded what had been clarified and what remained outstanding.

Then I closed the folder.

The process was not finished.

I had no reason to believe every question would have an easy answer.

But I was no longer waiting for Landon to tell me when I was allowed to understand my own affairs.

That was a change I could feel.

Click
