I was going to ask Landon.”

“That's reasonable. Keep the question specific.”

I took a breath.

“You make it sound like I'm talking to a stranger.”

“No. I'm asking you to communicate clearly with someone whose financial access is changing.”

I leaned against the kitchen counter.

I did not like hearing Landon described that way.

For twelve years, he had been the person I called when something went wrong.

He had helped me through difficult days, remembered details I forgot, and made decisions with me about the life we built.

The fact that our marriage had ended did not erase every good thing that had happened.

I did not want to turn our entire history into a lie.

But I also could not keep using our history as a reason to avoid looking at the present.

“I'll ask him for the details,” I said.

“Good.”

“And if he explains it?”

“Then you can compare the explanation with the records.”

I rubbed my forehead.

“Do you ever get tired of being careful?”

“Of course.”

“Then why do you keep doing it?”

“Because being tired doesn't make the consequences disappear.”

I had no answer to that.

After we hung up, I opened a blank message to Landon.

I typed a question about the transfer and asked him to identify the account, the amount, and the purpose of the payment.

I read it twice before sending it.

The message was polite.

It did not accuse him of anything.

It simply asked for information I should have requested in the first place.

I pressed send.

Then I put the phone down.

My first reaction was relief.

My second was shame.

I had spent so long making sure Landon never felt questioned that asking an ordinary financial question now felt like an act of defiance.

I had to remind myself that I was allowed to understand my own money.

I went back to the records.

My father had helped me organize the information into three categories: accounts I understood, accounts that needed verification, and arrangements that required further documentation.

I added the latest requests to the list.

I also made sure I could access the relevant records without relying on Landon's devices or explanations.

It was slow work.

Every step required attention.

I could not simply trust my memory, and I could not assume that a familiar account name told me everything I needed to know.

Still, the process was helping.

I was no longer staring at a collection of financial details and hoping someone would tell me what mattered.

I was asking questions.

That evening, I received a reply from Landon.

He wanted to know why I needed additional details.

The question was not unreasonable by itself.

If I had received the same message before the divorce, I might have answered immediately and apologized for making the process more complicated.

Instead, I took a moment to think.

I was responsible for protecting my accounts.

I had already changed the PINs and restricted the access I could control.

I was entitled to know what a requested transfer involved before providing information or authorizing anything.

I wrote back that I was reviewing the financial arrangements following the divorce and needed the details for my records.

Then I stopped.

I did not add a long explanation.

I did not apologize.

I did not tell him what my father had advised.

I simply left the message as it was.

The phone remained silent for a while.

I tried to read a book, but I kept glancing at the screen.

When another notification appeared, I reached for it too quickly.

It was an ordinary alert from one of the accounts I had been reviewing.

I felt foolish for reacting so strongly.

My nerves were stretched thin.

I had become accustomed to Landon's messages determining the pace of my day.

Even after the marriage ended, I was still waiting for him to tell me whether I had handled something correctly.

I set the phone on the table and walked away.

A little later, I called my father again.

“I asked him for the details.”

“Good.”

“He asked why.”

“What did you tell him?”

“That I'm reviewing the arrangements and keeping records.”

“That's a fair answer.”

I waited for him to say something else.

He did not.

“Are you worried about what he'll do?” I asked.

“I'm concerned about what neither of us knows yet.”

I looked toward the envelope where I had placed the old black card.

It was only a card.

It could be nothing more than a payment method that needed to be closed or reassigned.

But the fact that Landon had always acted as though it belonged to him made me notice it differently.

I had never asked why he preferred that card.

I had never wondered whether I understood every part of the arrangement.

I had simply accepted the way things worked.

“Dad, I don't want to believe he used me.”

“Then don't decide that he did.”

I closed my eyes.

“But don't decide he couldn't have, either,” he added.

I felt the familiar irritation rise in my chest.

I wanted certainty.

I wanted my father to tell me whether I was safe.

Instead, he kept bringing me back to the same difficult point.

We did not know enough yet.

The following morning, I reviewed the documents I had gathered and wrote down the questions that remained unanswered.

I did not find proof of wrongdoing.

I did not find a reason to accuse Landon of stealing from me.

What I found was a set of financial arrangements that I needed to understand independently.

That was not the dramatic answer I had feared.

It was also not the comforting answer I wanted.

I called my father and told him where things stood.

“We'll keep checking,” he said.

I looked at the pages spread across the table.

For the first time, the work no longer felt like a punishment for trusting my husband.

It felt like a way to reclaim the part of my life I had neglected.

I could not undo the divorce.

I could not change the decisions I had made while I was married.

I could, however, stop treating another person's confidence as a substitute for my own understanding.

I returned to the message thread with Landon.

His request was still there.

So was my reply asking for details.

I did not know whether he would answer with a clear explanation or whether the conversation would become more difficult.

I decided that I would deal with whatever came next when I had the facts.

Until then, I would not send information simply because he expected me to.

I would not approve a transfer I did not understand.

And I would not pretend that asking a question meant I had stopped being fair.

Those were small decisions.

But they were mine.

I closed the laptop and placed the financial notes in the folder my father had brought.

Then I put the folder in the drawer beside the old black card.

The drawer shut with a soft click.

I stood there for a moment, looking at the handle.

I had spent years believing that keeping a marriage together required me to avoid certain questions.

Now that the marriage was over, I was learning that keeping myself secure required me to ask them.

<a
