2 – The Man I Trusted Had Always Sounded Certain About Money, and I Had Never Asked What His Confidence Was Hiding

I went home alone that evening.

The house felt different before I even opened the front door.

Landon's car was gone, of course.

His shoes were missing from the hallway.

The jacket he usually left over the back of a chair was no longer there.

Nothing had been thrown around.

Nothing had been broken.

He had simply taken the things he wanted and left the rest for me to understand.

I stood in the entrance with my keys in my hand.

For twelve years, I had believed a marriage ended when two people stopped loving each other.

Now I knew that the paperwork could finish before the heart had any idea what to do.

I put my bag on the kitchen counter.

Then I took off my shoes and sat at the table.

The divorce papers were still inside my bag.

I did not want to read them again.

I knew what they said.

I had read every page with my lawyer, asked questions, and signed where I was told to sign.

I had made the decision to end the marriage because I could no longer live with Landon's betrayal.

That decision had hurt.

It had also brought a strange kind of relief.

What I had not expected was to feel afraid of the life that came afterward.

My phone vibrated again.

This time, the message was from my father.

He wanted me to make a list of every account, card, and financial arrangement that Landon had been able to access during our marriage.

I stared at the message.

Then I put the phone facedown.

I was exhausted.

I wanted one evening when I did not have to think about accounts, lawyers, or the woman who had stood beside my husband outside the courtroom.

I wanted to eat something simple and watch television without hearing my father's voice in my head.

So I heated leftovers and sat on the sofa.

The food went cold before I finished it.

Eventually, I opened my laptop.

I told myself I was doing it to reassure my father.

I would check the accounts, see that everything was normal, and send him a message telling him he could stop worrying.

That was the plan.

I started with the accounts I knew best.

My checking account looked familiar.

The balance was close to what I expected.

There were the usual payments, a few purchases I recognized, and the automatic bills I had set up years earlier.

Nothing immediately stood out.

I moved to the credit cards.

Again, nothing seemed unusual.

I had frozen several cards, so I could no longer use them until the banks finished their verification steps.

That inconvenience annoyed me.

It also reminded me that I was now responsible for every decision about my own money.

I had spent years thinking of our finances as a shared responsibility.

In practice, Landon had often been the person who decided what required attention.

He liked to say he was saving me time.

I had liked the idea of being spared the details.

It had seemed reasonable when we were happy.

It seemed less reasonable now.

I opened the business account.

That account was different.

It was connected to the company expenses I was authorized to approve, and Landon had used it for certain purchases and travel arrangements.

I knew the basic process.

Receipts were submitted.

Expenses were reviewed.

Approved charges were paid.

It was not an arrangement I had considered dangerous.

I had never thought of it as a place where our personal problems could become financial problems.

I checked the recent activity.

Then I checked it again.

I could not identify anything that proved wrongdoing.

There were charges I recognized and entries I would need to review more carefully.

I made a note to ask the bank about the accounts that required additional verification.

I did not accuse Landon of anything.

I did not have evidence to support an accusation.

That distinction mattered to me.

Even after the divorce, I did not want my anger to become a substitute for facts.

I had seen enough damage caused by people who decided what they believed before they knew what had happened.

My father had spent his career warning people about that.

I was not going to ignore his advice simply because I was upset.

I wrote down the account names and the access arrangements I could remember.

The list grew longer than I expected.

Personal checking.

Credit cards.

Business expenses.

Travel purchases.

The emergency card.

The old black card.

There were also recurring payments I had not personally arranged because Landon had said he would handle them.

I did not know whether those arrangements would become a problem.

I only knew I had stopped asking questions about them.

That was enough to make me uncomfortable.

A little after nine, I called my father.

He answered immediately.

“Have you checked everything?”

“I'm working through it.”

“Anything you don't recognize?”

“Nothing I can honestly call suspicious yet.”

“Good. Keep it that way until you have the records.”

I leaned back in my chair.

“You really think something is wrong.”

“I think you need to know what you own, what you owe, and who can access either one.”

“That's not what I asked.”

He was quiet for a moment.

“I think you relied on Landon to handle things that you should have understood yourself.”

The words landed harder than I expected.

I looked at the list on my screen.

There were accounts I could explain easily.

There were others where I knew the purpose but not the details.

I had signed documents without reading every page because Landon had summarized them for me.

I had approved arrangements because he said they were standard.

I had accepted his confidence as proof that he knew what he was doing.

“I trusted my husband,” I said.

“I know.”

“So why does that sound like something I did wrong?”

“Trusting someone isn't the mistake. Giving up the ability to check what they're doing can become one.”

I pressed my fingers against my forehead.

I wanted him to tell me that I had done nothing wrong.

I wanted him to say that Landon was responsible for his own choices and that I did not need to question every decision I had made during twelve years of marriage.

Part of that was true.

I could not control another person's behavior.

But I could no longer pretend that I had always been careful.

“I'm not saying you caused this,” my father added. “I'm saying you need to understand your position before you make another decision.”

I swallowed.

“All right.”

“Tomorrow, gather the statements and agreements you can access. Don't change or delete anything. Keep the original records.”

“Are you going to go through them with me?”

“If you want me to.”

I looked around the kitchen.

Landon used to sit at the opposite end of the table with his laptop open.

He would turn the screen toward me and show me a chart or a balance.

Sometimes he would explain the figures.

Sometimes he would tell me there was nothing I needed to worry about.

I had rarely asked him to slow down.

I had rarely requested the original statements.

I had been so relieved to have a partner who seemed capable that I had not noticed how much of my own understanding I had surrendered.

“Yes,” I said. “I want you to help me.”

“Then we'll start with the records.”

After we hung up, I continued working.

I did not try to interpret every transaction.

I saved what I could access and wrote down questions beside the entries I did not understand.

I made a separate note about the cards I had frozen and the access I had removed.

I also wrote down the date of the divorce.

That date would matter if I needed to explain when I had changed the account permissions.

I had no idea whether I would ever need to do that.

I simply wanted a clear record.

Near midnight, I shut the laptop.

The house was silent.

I went to the bedroom and stood beside the dresser.

There was an empty space where Landon had kept his watch.

I had not noticed it earlier.

I sat on the edge of the bed and took off my wedding ring.

This time, I left it on the dresser.

I did not cry.

I felt too tired for that.

Instead, I thought about my father sitting beside me in the courthouse, insisting that I change my PINs before I could even begin to process the end of my marriage.

At the time, I had thought he was refusing to let me grieve.

Now I understood that he had been trying to make sure grief did not leave me careless.

The next morning, I would look at the records with him.

I would answer his questions.

I would learn whatever I needed to learn.

For the first time since the separation began, I stopped asking myself whether Landon still loved me.

I started asking myself what, exactly, I had trusted him to control.

Click here to continue reading: PART 3: When My Father Asked Me to Explain the Accounts, I Realized How Many Important Decisions I Had Accepted Without Seeing the Details

I went home alone that evening.
