But I don't think love is always the problem. Sometimes people love others and still make selfish decisions.”

Emily looked at me.

“That's a terrible answer.”

“I know.”

She rested the photograph on her lap.

“I keep remembering all the things he taught me. How to drive. How to change a tire. How to tell when someone was trying to sell me something I didn't need.”

“He was very good at that last one.”

Emily smiled.

Then her expression changed.

“And all those years, he was hiding Daniel.”

“Yes.”

“Did he ever think about what would happen if we found out?”

“I don't know.”

She turned the photograph over.

“Maybe he thought he could keep it separate forever.”

I thought of the storage unit.

The numbered key.

The carefully arranged folder.

The letters.

“He certainly tried.”

Emily placed the photograph on the table.

“Do you think he wanted us to meet Daniel?”

“I think he wanted the truth to come out eventually.”

“Eventually,” she repeated.

There was bitterness in her voice.

I didn't blame her.

Michael had left us to make decisions without him.

He had left us to answer questions he should have answered himself.

Emily spent the afternoon reading the letters.

I sat across from her while she went through them.

Sometimes she stopped to ask about a date.

Sometimes she read the same paragraph twice.

When she reached the final page, she put the letter down.

“I'm angry with him,” she said.

“I am too.”

“But I miss him.”

I reached across the table and took her hand.

“Me too.”

We stayed that way for a while.

Later, Emily asked whether Daniel had children.

I told her about his daughter and son.

She asked their ages.

She asked where they lived.

She asked whether Daniel had mentioned wanting to meet her.

“He didn't ask directly,” I said. “But I think he would be willing.”

Emily nodded.

“I need some time.”

“Take it.”

She looked toward the living room.

“Do you think Dad would have wanted us to become a family?”

“I don't know.”

I was tired of pretending I could answer questions about Michael's intentions.

“I think he wanted everyone to be all right,” I added. “But wanting that isn't the same as knowing how to make it happen.”

Emily considered this.

Then she helped me prepare dinner.

We cooked the chicken Michael used to make on Sundays.

It was the first time I had prepared it since his death.

Emily followed his recipe, measuring the spices with the same small spoon he had always used.

At the table, she looked at the empty chair beside mine.

“I keep expecting him to complain that we used too much pepper.”

“He always said that.”

“He never stopped eating it.”

“Your father believed complaints were part of the cooking process.”

Emily laughed.

It was the first easy laugh we had shared since the funeral.

After dinner, she helped me wash the dishes.

We didn't talk about Daniel again that evening.

We didn't need to.

The next morning, Emily asked to visit the storage facility.

I was surprised.

“Why?”

“I want to see where you found everything.”

“There isn't much to see.”

“I know.”

She looked at me.

“But I want to understand how he arranged it.”

We drove there together.

The young man at the office recognized me.

He led us to the corridor but remained at the entrance while we looked inside the empty unit.

Emily stood in the middle of the concrete floor.

She turned slowly.

“He chose this place.”

“Yes.”

“He paid for it.”

“Yes.”

“And he left instructions for you.”

I nodded.

Emily looked toward the metal door.

“Dad must have thought about this a lot.”

I hadn't considered that.

I had been so focused on what he had hidden that I hadn't asked how much effort it had taken to hide it.

The unit had been rented.

The documents had been collected.

The key had been placed in the toolbox.

The letters had been arranged.

Michael had spent time preparing for the moment when I would discover his secret.

He had made a plan.

But he had not made a plan for the conversations that would follow.

Emily walked back toward the entrance.

“Why didn't he just tell you?”

I had no answer.

On the drive home, she asked whether I thought Michael had been planning to confess before he died.

I told her about the date on the note.

March 14.

She checked her calendar.

“That's the day he had his annual medical appointment last year.”

I looked at her.

“How do you know?”

“He told me about it when I called him that evening. He said the doctor wanted him to make a few changes to his diet.”

I remembered Michael eating a second serving of dessert that same week.

I had teased him about his determination to ignore medical advice.

He had laughed.

We had both forgotten the conversation almost immediately.

Emily looked out the window.

“Maybe he meant to tell you after that appointment.”

“Maybe.”

“Or maybe he was going to tell you that day.”

We had no proof.

But the possibility stayed with me.

Perhaps the date marked a decision Michael had made and then postponed.

Perhaps it had nothing to do with his medical appointment.

The trouble with discovering a secret after someone's death was that every ordinary detail became a possible clue.

A date.

A receipt.

A phrase.

You could spend the rest of your life assigning meaning to things that might never have meant anything at all.

When we returned home, Emily went through the folder once more.

She found a bank transfer from the year she started college.

The payment was larger than the others.

It had been sent to Claire's account shortly before our daughter began her first semester.

Emily stared at the page.

“Did we ever have trouble paying my tuition?”

“Not that I remember.”

“Dad told me he had saved enough for college.”

“He had.”

She looked at me.

“Do you think he used money from our savings to help Daniel?”

I examined the statement.

“I don't know.”

There was no evidence that the money had come from our joint account.

But the account was unfamiliar, and the payment had occurred during a year when our expenses were high.

We had paid for Emily's education without taking out a large loan.

Michael had always been proud of that.

I had been proud of it too.

Now I wondered whether the money he had sent to Daniel had been earned separately, saved separately, or taken from funds I had assumed were entirely ours.

I hated the uncertainty.

Emily put the page down.

“I don't want to think that he took something from us.”

“Neither do I.”

“But we should know.”

She was right.

I had been so focused on the emotional betrayal that I had overlooked the practical questions.

The financial records mattered.

Not because money could explain the whole story.

But because Michael had used money to maintain a relationship he kept secret.

If he had moved funds from our shared resources without telling me, I deserved to know.

I gathered the bank statements into a separate folder.

The following Monday, I called the bank again.

This time, I asked what documentation would be required to determine whether the account belonged to Michael's estate and whether any transfers involved joint funds.

The representative explained the process.

It would take time.

I wrote down the instructions.

After the call, I returned to the desk and looked at the blue folder.

I had begun this search wanting to know whether my husband had been unfaithful.

I had discovered a son.

Now I needed to know whether his secret had affected the financial life we had built together.

It was not the question I had expected to ask.

But it was one I could no longer avoid.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: The Bank Records Forced Me to Face a Different Kind of Betrayal, and Daniel’s Next Call Changed What I Thought I Knew

Emily arrived the following weekend.
