5 – The Letter Michael Left Me Explained Why He Had Kept Daniel Hidden, but It Raised Questions He Could No Longer Answer

I didn't open Michael's second letter in the café.

I put it inside my handbag and left it there.

Claire watched me do it.

She didn't ask me to read it in front of her.

That was one small kindness I appreciated, even though I wasn't ready to feel grateful to her for anything.

We sat together for another twenty minutes.

I asked a few more questions about Daniel.

She answered what she could.

Then the conversation began to circle around things neither of us knew how to say.

Finally, Claire stood.

“I think I've taken enough of your time.”

“You haven't.”

She looked surprised.

“I still have questions,” I added. “I may need to speak to you again.”

“Whenever you're ready.”

She picked up her handbag.

At the door, she turned back.

“Helen, I never wanted you to be hurt.”

I looked at her.

“I believe you didn't want to hurt me.”

She nodded slowly.

It wasn't forgiveness.

It was simply the truth as I understood it then.

I watched her leave.

Then I returned to my coffee, which had gone cold.

The envelope felt heavier than paper should have felt.

I drove home without turning on the radio.

Michael's letter sat beside me in the passenger seat.

At every red light, I looked at it.

I wanted to open it.

I wanted to throw it away.

I wanted to ask him why he had made me wait until he was dead to hear the truth.

Instead, I kept both hands on the steering wheel and drove home.

I went straight to his office.

The desk was still covered with the documents from the blue box.

I placed the new envelope beside the first letter.

For a moment, I considered calling Emily.

But I knew what she would say.

Take your time, Mom.

You don't have to read it today.

She was right.

That was precisely why I decided to read it immediately.

I broke the seal.

The letter was three pages long.

Michael had written it by hand, using the blue ink pen he kept beside his calculator.

The first page began with an apology.

Not a general apology.

Not the sort of words people use when they want to escape an uncomfortable conversation.

He apologized for a specific decision.

He had chosen not to tell me about Daniel because he believed the truth would destroy the life we had built.

He admitted that he had confused protecting our marriage with protecting himself.

I stopped reading.

I had to get up and walk to the kitchen.

I poured a glass of water.

Then I returned to the desk.

The second page explained how he had met Claire.

They had known each other before he met me.

They had been young, serious about each other, and convinced that their future would work out.

Then Michael's father became ill, and the family business began to struggle.

Michael had taken on financial responsibilities he wasn't prepared for.

He had become frightened of failing the people who depended on him.

He and Claire had argued about money, family expectations, and whether they were ready to raise a child.

By the time Daniel was born, they were no longer together.

Michael wrote that he had helped Claire financially from the beginning.

He had visited Daniel when he could.

He had attended some important moments in the boy's life, though never as openly as he should have.

He had paid school fees.

He had contributed to medical bills.

He had tried to be dependable in every way except the one that mattered most.

He had not given Daniel a father who could stand beside him without looking over his shoulder.

I read that sentence several times.

Then I turned to the final page.

Michael explained that Claire had eventually told Daniel the truth about his father.

He had been a teenager when he learned that Michael was married.

The revelation had hurt him.

Michael had wanted to explain himself, but he had feared making things worse.

So he had done what he always did when life became complicated.

He had sent money.

He had written letters.

He had waited for the right time.

The right time never came.

I reached the bottom of the page.

There was one final paragraph.

I have no right to ask you to forgive me. I only ask that you understand Daniel did not choose the circumstances of his birth. Whatever you decide about me, please don't make him pay for my cowardice.

I put the letter down.

For a long time, I didn't move.

I had expected a confession.

I had expected excuses.

What I hadn't expected was that Michael would leave me with a moral decision he had spent decades avoiding himself.

He had asked me not to punish Daniel.

But I hadn't even met the man.

I didn't know what he wanted from me.

I didn't know whether he had known about me all his life or whether Michael had kept us apart until recently.

I didn't know whether he wanted a relationship with his father's family.

And I didn't know whether I was ready to share the memory of my husband with someone who had a different claim on him.

I picked up my phone and called Emily.

She answered quickly.

“How did it go with Claire?”

“She told me about Daniel.”

Emily was quiet.

“Dad's son?”

“Yes.”

“Did you read the letter?”

“I just finished.”

“What did it say?”

I looked at the three pages on the desk.

“It said your father was afraid.”

“Of what?”

“Of losing the life he had with us.”

Emily took a breath.

“Do you believe him?”

I thought about that.

“I believe he was afraid.
