17 – The More He Told Me About Those Years, the More I Understood Why My Mother Had Been Afraid of My Questions

I did not contact him immediately after our second meeting.

I needed time to think about what he had told me.

The conversation had answered some questions, but it had also shown me how much of the story existed beyond my own memories.

I had spent years imagining what he might say.

Now I had heard him speak, and I knew that I needed to be careful about what I did with his words.

He had admitted that he could have tried harder.

He had admitted that fear had kept him away.

He had also said that my mother had made it clear she did not want him involved in my life under the circumstances they were facing.

Those things mattered.

But I still did not know exactly what those circumstances had been.

I could not build a complete explanation from a handful of statements.

So I waited a few days before sending him another message.

I thanked him for meeting with me again.

I told him that I had been thinking about our conversation.

Then I asked whether he remembered the first time he had tried to contact us after the separation.

I explained that I had a childhood memory of overhearing my mother mention that a message had been returned.

I could not remember the date.

I could not even be certain the conversation had been about him.

But the memory had remained with me, and I wanted to know whether it meant anything to him.

I sent the message and returned to my work.

For the rest of the afternoon, I tried not to imagine what his answer might be.

That evening, I cooked dinner and ate at the table.

I put the dishes away.

I read for a while before going to bed.

Nothing about my routine had changed, yet I felt as though I were living beside another version of my life.

In that version, I was no longer a child waiting for my mother to decide what I could know.

I was an adult asking questions of the people who had actually lived through the events I was trying to understand.

The following afternoon, he replied.

He said he remembered sending a letter during the period after contact stopped.

He had used an address he believed was still valid.

The letter had been returned to him.

He did not remember every detail of the envelope, but he remembered the disappointment of receiving it back.

He had assumed that the address was no longer being used.

He had also wondered whether the return meant that there was no longer a practical way to reach us.

He admitted that he had not tried as persistently as he might have.

I read the email twice.

Then I opened my notebook.

My old memory came back with unexpected clarity.

I remembered my mother standing in the hallway with the telephone against her ear.

I remembered her saying that a message had been returned.

I remembered the silence that followed.

At the time, I had not understood the significance of those words.

I had been young, and the conversation had seemed like one of the many adult matters that had nothing to do with me.

Now I wondered whether the moment had been connected to his letter.

I could not establish that from memory alone.

But the possibility was strong enough that I wanted to ask my mother about it.

Before doing so, I wrote to him again.

I asked whether he remembered the name of the person who had returned the letter or whether he had kept any copy of it.

He said he had not kept the envelope.

He remembered receiving it back, but the details had faded.

He did not want to pretend that his recollection was more precise than it was.

I appreciated that.

For years, I had been surrounded by statements delivered with certainty.

I was learning that a person could be honest while admitting that they did not remember everything.

I thanked him for telling me.

Then I put my phone away.

I did not immediately call my mother.

I wanted to consider how to approach the conversation without turning it into an accusation.

If the returned message had been the one I remembered, it might explain why the phrase had stayed with me.

But I still did not know what my mother had known or what she had decided.

There was no reason to begin by assuming the worst.

I called her the following evening.

We spoke about ordinary things first.

She told me about a small inconvenience she had dealt with that day.

I listened and asked a few questions.

Then I told her that I had spoken with the man again.

She became quiet.

I continued speaking before the silence could become an argument.

"He remembers trying to contact us after we stopped seeing each other."

My mother did not answer.

"He said he sent a letter to an address he believed was still valid. It was returned to him."

Her breathing changed.

I recognized the sound immediately.

It was the same small interruption I had heard when I showed her the old photograph.

I waited.

Then I asked the question that had been sitting in my mind since I read his email.

"Do you remember a message being returned?"

For several seconds, she said nothing.

Then she asked why I wanted to know.

"Because I remember you talking about one when I was young. I don't know whether it was the same letter, but I'd like to understand."

My mother sighed.

She said that she remembered a letter being discussed.

She could not remember the exact date.

She did not say whether she had seen the envelope herself.

I waited for her to explain more.

Instead, she said that the period had been difficult.

I told her that I understood it had been difficult.

"But I still need to know what happened."

She was silent.

Then she asked whether I had any idea what it had been like for her.

I told her that I did not know everything she had experienced.

I had never claimed otherwise.

I also told her that I could not understand her experience if she refused to explain it.

That seemed to hurt her.

She said she had tried to do what she thought was best for me.

I listened.

I believed that she had made choices she thought were necessary.

I also knew that the results of those choices had followed me into adulthood.

Both things could be true.

"I am not asking you to defend yourself," I said. "I'm asking you to tell me what you remember."

She asked whether he had told me that she had stopped him from contacting me.

I hesitated.

The question sounded different from the others.

I told her that he had described disagreements and said he had felt discouraged from continuing.

He had also admitted that he could have tried harder.

I had not presented his account as proof that she alone was responsible.

I had told her what he said.

Nothing more.

My mother was quiet for a long time.

Then she said she needed to think.

I told her I understood.

We ended the call without resolving the matter.

I sat at the table afterward and wrote down the details.

My mother remembered a letter being discussed.

She had not confirmed that it was the same letter he described.

She had not explained what she had known at the time.

Those were the limits of what I had learned.

I wanted more.

But I had promised myself that I would not turn an uncertain connection into a proven fact.

I could wait for another conversation.

Two days later, my mother asked me to visit.

Her voice sounded tired when she called, and I could tell that the request had taken some effort.

I agreed.

When I arrived, she was sitting at the table.

There were two cups beside the kettle.

She had already prepared the tea.

I sat opposite her.

For a while, neither of us spoke.

Then she said she remembered more about the period than she had admitted.

I felt my hands tighten around the cup.

I wanted to ask everything at once.

Instead, I waited.

She said the years around the separation had been difficult in ways she had never properly explained to me.

There had been disagreements about what my life should look like and about the role the man would have in it.

She had believed that the existing arrangement could not continue.

She had worried that the adults involved would keep fighting and that I would be caught between them.

She said she had wanted stability.

She had wanted the arguments to stop.

I listened.

Those were explanations, but they were still broad.

I asked what she had believed would happen if he remained involved.

She looked toward the window.

She said she had been afraid that decisions about my life would no longer be within her control.

The admission surprised me.

She had framed her choices as protection for so long that I had rarely considered how much the need for control might have mattered to her.

I asked whether she thought he was a danger to me.

She shook her head.

"That isn't what I'm saying."

"Then what are you saying?"

She rubbed her hands together.

"I was afraid of what would happen if everything continued the way it was."

I asked whether she had explained those fears to him.

She said they had argued about them.

I asked whether they had ever tried to reach an agreement.

She did not answer immediately.

Then she said that she had not believed an agreement would last.

I looked down at my cup.

For years, I had imagined that someone must have made a single decision that changed everything.

Now I was beginning to see the possibility of a series of decisions.

An argument.

A refusal.

A letter.

A returned message.

Another attempt that never happened.

Then the years accumulated.

The longer the separation continued, the harder it became to reverse it.

I asked my mother whether she had wanted him out of my life permanently.

She closed her eyes.

"No," she said quietly. "Not when it first happened."

I felt the words land between us.

They did not mean that she had wanted him to return.

They did not explain what she had done.

But they suggested that the outcome might have become permanent even if that had not been her intention at the beginning.

I asked what had changed.

My mother looked at me.

She said that time had changed things.

The longer he stayed away, the more she believed that bringing him back would upset the life we had built.

She had grown used to being the person who made the decisions.

She had told herself that reopening the past would cause more pain than leaving it alone.

I asked whether she had considered how I might feel when I grew older.

She looked down at the table.

"No," she said after a while. "Not properly."

That answer hurt more than I expected.

I had wanted her to acknowledge the consequences of her choices.

Now that she was doing so, I felt grief for the years in which those consequences had been invisible to her.

I did not know whether she had deliberately ignored my feelings or simply convinced herself that I would eventually stop asking.

I could not know the exact reason.

But I knew that she had not fully considered what the silence would mean to me as an adult.

I took a breath.

"Did you ever think about telling me the truth?"

She nodded.

"Sometimes."

"Why didn't you?"

She said that she was afraid I would blame her.

She was afraid I would see her differently.

She was afraid that I would want to leave the life she had built for us and go looking for something she could no longer control.

I listened without interrupting.

For the first time, I could hear her fear without automatically treating it as an instruction.

She was afraid of losing her place in my life.

She had tried to protect that place by keeping the past closed.

But the very thing she had done to protect our relationship had made me question it.

I told her that I was hurt.

I told her that I wished she had trusted me enough to let me ask questions when I was older.

I told her that I could not make the years disappear simply because she regretted how things had unfolded.

She nodded.

Then she said something that I would remember for a long time.

"I thought if I kept it away from you, it couldn't hurt you."

I looked at her.

"But it did hurt me."

She began to cry.

I had seen my mother angry.

I had seen her frustrated.

I had seen her turn away whenever a conversation became too difficult.

I had not often seen her sit in front of me and acknowledge that her decisions might have caused pain.

I did not know what I was supposed to do with that moment.

Part of me wanted to comfort her.

Part of me was still the child who had spent years wondering why he was gone.

I did not want to abandon that child simply because my mother was finally showing me her fear.

So I stayed in my chair.

I let the silence last.

After a while, she wiped her eyes.

She said she could not change what had happened.

I told her I knew.

"But you can tell me the truth now."

She nodded.

She did not promise to explain every detail.

She did not suddenly become able to remember everything.

But she agreed that she would try to stop treating the past as a subject I was not allowed to discuss.

It was not the complete answer I had wanted.

It was a beginning.

I finished my tea before leaving.

On the way home, I thought about the man and my mother.

Neither account made the separation simple.

He had been afraid of continuing to push.

She had been afraid of losing control of the situation.

He had made choices that allowed the silence to continue.

She had made choices that made his return harder.

And I had been left to grow up with an explanation that concealed more than it revealed.

I did not have to excuse either of them to understand that the past had been shaped by fear.

I did not have to decide who was a good person and who was a bad one.

I only had to acknowledge the choices and their consequences.

That night, I wrote the conversation down in my notebook.

I carefully separated what my mother had said from what I inferred.

I recorded her admission that she had not wanted the separation to become permanent at the beginning.

I recorded her fear that the disagreements would continue and her acknowledgment that time had made the situation harder to change.

I also recorded what she had not told me.

She had not confirmed the exact circumstances surrounding the returned letter.

She had not explained every conversation with the man.

She had not given a precise account of all the decisions made during that period.

I wanted to remember that the story was still incomplete.

But it was no longer closed.

For the first time, my mother had sat across from me and spoken about her own choices without immediately telling me to stop asking.

I could not change the past.

I could decide what to do with the truth that had finally begun to emerge.

And I knew that the next part of my life would depend less on making them explain everything perfectly than on deciding how I wanted to live with what I had learned.

Click here to continue reading: PART 18: My Mother
