16 – After Hearing His Side, I Could No Longer Pretend That One Person Alone Had Carried the Whole Story

I spent the next morning thinking about the meeting.

I had expected to feel either relieved or devastated.

Instead, I felt both at different times.

Some moments brought relief.

He had remembered me.

He had wanted to hear from me.

He had acknowledged that his absence had affected my life.

Other moments brought a quieter kind of pain.

He had known there was a chance I was growing up believing he had abandoned me.

He had still stepped back.

He had not stopped caring, but caring had not been enough to bring him back into my life.

I had to sit with that difference.

For years, I had imagined the past as a simple division between the person who left and the person who remained.

My mother had stayed.

He had disappeared.

That was the arrangement I had understood.

Now I knew that the decision had involved more uncertainty than I had been told.

He had tried to remain in my life, at least in the ways he described.

He had encountered resistance.

He had decided that continuing to push might cause more harm.

And he had allowed that decision to last for years.

My mother had made choices too.

I still did not know the complete reasons behind them.

I could not decide that the responsibility belonged entirely to one person simply because I was angry about the outcome.

I could also no longer accept that the entire separation had happened without anyone making choices.

I wrote that thought in my notebook.

Then I put the notebook away.

I did not want to spend the whole morning analyzing every sentence he had spoken.

I needed to allow the conversation to settle.

I made breakfast.

I answered a few messages.

I completed a task I had been putting off.

For a while, the ordinary routine helped.

Then I found myself thinking about one sentence he had said.

Some of it was probably fear.

I understood that more than I wanted to.

My own life had been shaped by fear in ways I had not recognized until recently.

I had stayed silent because I feared my mother's anger.

I had avoided asking difficult questions because I feared losing the relationship we still had.

I had convinced myself that accepting incomplete answers was a form of loyalty.

He had also been afraid.

But our positions had not been the same.

I had been a child.

He had been an adult.

I could acknowledge that his choices had been difficult without treating them as equivalent to mine.

That distinction mattered.

I was not responsible for the decisions that kept him away.

I had been the person living with their consequences.

I needed to remember that while I tried to understand him.

Later that afternoon, he sent a brief message.

He thanked me for meeting with him.

He said he had been thinking about what I had told him.

He did not ask me to forgive him.

He did not insist that his explanation should be enough.

He simply said that he understood why I had been hurt.

I read the message twice.

Then I replied that I appreciated his willingness to speak honestly.

I told him I needed time to think about everything.

He said he understood.

That was the entire exchange.

It did not repair the years between us.

It did not settle the remaining questions.

But it was a conversation in which neither of us tried to control what the other person was allowed to feel.

I wanted to remember that.

For the next few days, I did not contact my mother about the meeting.

I wanted to understand my own response before bringing her into it.

I also did not want to use his account as a weapon.

I had no interest in calling her and announcing that he had told me a different story.

That would have turned the next conversation into a contest over who was telling the truth.

I needed more than that.

I wanted to know what she remembered.

I wanted to understand what she had feared.

I wanted to hear why she believed that keeping him away was the right decision.

Those questions were still difficult.

But I could now ask them with a clearer understanding of what I did not know.

On the fourth day after the meeting, I called her.

She answered in her usual voice.

We spoke briefly about ordinary matters.

Then she asked whether I had seen him.

I told her that I had.

She became quiet.

"Did you talk?"

"Yes."

"What did he say?"

I took a breath.

"He told me that he remembered me. He said he had tried to remain in contact, but that things became difficult between the adults involved."

My mother did not respond.

I continued carefully.

"He said he was afraid that pushing harder would make things worse. He admitted that he could have tried harder."

She was silent for a long time.

Then she said that he had only told me his side.

I agreed.

"Yes. That's why I wanted to hear yours too."

She sounded unsettled.

I told her that I was not asking her to accept his account as the whole truth.

I was not asking her to agree with every memory he had.

I simply wanted her to explain what she remembered and why the decisions had been made.

She said that I did not understand the circumstances.

I told her that I knew I did not understand them.

That was precisely why I was asking.

For a moment, I hoped she would begin explaining.

Instead, she asked whether he had said anything about her.

I considered the question.

"He said there were disagreements. He didn't try to tell me what you were thinking."

That was true.

He had described his own choices and his own fears.

He had not claimed to know every thought my mother had carried.

She seemed surprised.

Then she asked whether I believed him.

I thought about the question before answering.

"I believe that he remembers things the way he described them. I don't know whether his account explains everything."

My mother sighed.

I continued.

"I don't think either of you can explain every part of what happened from memory alone."

She said that she had not expected me to judge her.

"I'm not trying to judge you," I said. "I'm trying to understand why I lost contact with someone who mattered to me."

She did not answer.

I could hear a faint sound in the background, perhaps something being moved across a table.

Then she said that she had done what she thought was best.

I wanted to ask what she believed she was protecting me from.

I wanted to ask whether she had understood how deeply the separation would affect me.

I wanted to ask whether there had been a point when she could have changed her mind.

I chose one question.

"Why did you think keeping us apart was the right thing to do?"

My mother breathed out slowly.

She said that the circumstances had been difficult.

She said there had been disagreements about the future.

She said that she had been trying to provide stability.

I listened.

Those were explanations, but they still did not tell me everything I needed to know.

I asked what stability meant in that situation.

She said that she had been afraid of what might happen if things continued as they were.

I waited for her to say more.

She did not.

"What were you afraid would happen?"

She said she did not want to go through all of it again.

I felt the familiar ache of a conversation reaching its limit.

But I did not interrupt her with another question.

I had learned that pushing harder did not always produce more honesty.

Sometimes it only made the other person retreat.

I told her that I was willing to continue the conversation when she felt able to explain more.

She said that she could not promise when that would be.

I said I understood.

Then I made one thing clear.

"I need you to know that I can't treat the old explanation as complete anymore."

She did not respond.

I continued.

"I love you. That hasn't changed. But I need to understand what happened, even if some of the answers are painful."

My mother told me that she had always tried to protect me.

I did not tell her she was wrong.

I also did not tell her that protection excused every choice.

Instead, I asked her whether she could understand that I had grown up with questions that nobody was willing to answer.

She said she knew I had been upset.

That was not quite the same thing.

Still, I could hear that she was struggling.

I decided not to demand an immediate resolution.

We ended the call quietly.

Afterward, I sat at the table and thought about what she had said.

She had mentioned stability.

She had mentioned fear.

She had said she believed she was protecting me.

Those words provided some understanding of how she saw her own actions.

They did not establish whether those actions had been necessary.

They did not tell me whether there had been other options.

They did not explain why she had discouraged me from asking questions even after I became an adult.

I wrote her words in my notebook.

Then I wrote my own response beneath them.

Understanding why someone made a choice does not automatically mean agreeing with it.

I wanted to remember that.

A few days later, I met the man again.

We had exchanged a couple of messages, and he had asked whether I would be comfortable speaking another time.

I said yes.

We chose the same café.

This meeting felt different from the first.

I was still nervous, but I no longer felt as though I were about to enter a completely unknown situation.

We had already spoken about the years of silence.

Now I wanted to understand more about the decisions that had followed.

He arrived on time.

We ordered coffee.

For a few minutes, we talked about ordinary things.

Then I asked whether he remembered the organization my mother had visited during that period.

He thought for a moment.

He said he remembered hearing its name, but he could not be sure whether he had known about the visit at the time.

I told him about the old card and the public photograph.

I explained that my mother had confirmed she had visited the organization.

He listened carefully.

He did not claim that the visit proved anything about the separation.

Instead, he said that there had been discussions about what would happen next, and that he had not understood all the reasons behind the decisions.

I asked what he had understood.

He said he had believed my mother wanted a different arrangement.

He had also believed that continuing to press the issue would create more conflict.

I asked whether anyone had clearly told him that he could never contact me again.

He took time to answer.

He said he remembered being discouraged from continuing in the same way.

He did not say that he had been given a single, unambiguous instruction that settled everything forever.

He acknowledged that some of the decision had been his.

He could have looked for another way to communicate.

He could have asked for a more definite answer.

He could have tried to establish whether contact might be possible later.

He had not done those things as persistently as he could have.

I listened to him without interrupting.

There was a difficult honesty in his answer.

He was not saying that every choice had been his to make.

He was saying that he had still made choices within a situation he found difficult.

That was closer to what I needed to understand.

I asked whether he had imagined contacting me when I was older.

He said he had thought about it.

But he had not known whether I would welcome him.

He had worried that appearing after so many years might cause more pain.

He had also been unsure what my mother had told me.

I asked why he had not tried to find out.

He admitted that he should have made more of an effort.

He said that fear had become easier to live with than the possibility of being rejected.

I looked at him.

For the first time, I could see how the separation might have hardened into a habit.

At first, he had believed that staying away would prevent conflict.

As the years passed, the distance itself became another obstacle.

The longer he waited, the harder it became to imagine returning.

He had begun to treat uncertainty as a reason not to act.

I recognized that pattern.

It was different from my own experience, but I understood something about it.

I had done the same thing with questions.

The longer I waited to ask, the more frightened I became of the answer.

Eventually, silence had seemed safer than the truth.

I had not chosen the original separation.

But I had lived with the consequences of that silence.

He had lived with his choices too.

That did not make us equally responsible for what had happened.

It did mean that the past had been shaped by fear at more than one point.

I asked him whether he wished he had made different choices.

He looked at his coffee.

"Yes," he said.

Then he looked back at me.

"I wish I had found a way to keep the door open."

I felt tears gather in my eyes.

I did not try to hide them.

I had spent too long believing that his absence meant he had never cared.

Now I was hearing him admit that he regretted the way things had unfolded.

It did not erase the years.

But it gave me something real to consider.

I told him that I could understand why he had been afraid without pretending that his absence had not hurt me.

He nodded.

"I know."

I paused.

"I don't want us to rush into pretending that everything is fine."

"Neither do I."

I appreciated that answer.

We agreed that we could continue talking if we both wanted to.

We did not promise a particular relationship.

We did not decide what place he would have in my life.

We agreed only that we would be honest about what we wanted and what we were ready for.

When I left the café, I felt tired.

I also felt steadier.

The story of my past was still incomplete.

My mother had not explained every decision.

The man had not remembered every detail.

There were gaps that might never be filled.

But I was no longer trying to make one person's account carry the entire weight of the past.

I had heard both of them describe parts of what happened.

I could compare their statements.

I could identify what they agreed on and what remained uncertain.

And I could recognize the difference between an explanation and an excuse.

That mattered.

At home, I opened my notebook and wrote down the points from the second meeting.

I recorded what he remembered about the organization.

I recorded his admission that he had not tried as persistently as he could have.

I recorded his wish that he had found a way to keep the door open.

I also recorded what I still did not know.

I had no precise account of every conversation between him and my mother.

I did not know every reason she had feared the arrangement they once had.

I did not know whether either of them remembered all the details accurately.

I did not have to pretend that those gaps were unimportant.

But I no longer had to treat them as a reason to abandon the search.

I closed the notebook.

For the first time, I could look at the past without needing to decide immediately who had been right and who had been wrong.

I could recognize the pain I had experienced.

I could understand that the adults involved had been afraid.

I could acknowledge that the choices they made had consequences that lasted far longer than they might have expected.

And I could decide what kind of future I wanted without waiting for either of them to write it for me.

That evening, I sent my mother a short message.

I told her that I was grateful she had begun speaking with me, even though our conversations remained difficult.

I said that I wanted us to keep talking when she felt ready.

I did not demand a reply.

I did not promise to stop asking questions.

I simply told her that I loved her and that I hoped we could reach a place where honesty did not threaten our relationship.

She replied later.

Her message was brief.

She said she had read what I wrote and needed time.

I answered that I understood.

Then I put the phone away.

I did not know how long it would take for my mother to speak more openly.

I did not know whether the remaining questions would receive clear answers.

I did not know what kind of relationship I would eventually build with the man I had found again.

But those uncertainties no longer felt like commands to stop.

They were simply things I had not learned yet.

I had spent twenty years living inside an explanation I had never been allowed to question.

Now I had begun to hear the people who had lived through the same period from different sides.

Their memories were incomplete.

Their decisions were complicated.

Their fears had mattered.

So had mine.

For the first time, I understood that I did not have to turn the past into a simple story in order to move forward.

I only had to be honest about what had happened to me, what I had learned, and what I still needed to understand.

That was where I intended to begin.

Click here to continue reading: PART 17: The More He Told Me
