he said.

His voice was familiar.

Not perfectly preserved in my memory, but close enough that I felt the years between us all at once.

"Hello."

We stood awkwardly beside the table.

Neither of us knew whether to shake hands or embrace.

In the end, we did neither.

He pulled out the chair opposite mine.

I sat down.

He removed his coat and placed it over the back of the chair.

Then he looked at me for a long moment.

"You've grown up."

The words were simple.

They were also difficult to hear.

I had been a child the last time our lives had overlapped in a meaningful way.

Now I was an adult sitting across from someone who had once been important to me.

I nodded.

"It's been a long time."

He looked down at the table.

"Yes."

A server came over.

We ordered coffee.

Neither of us touched the cups immediately after they arrived.

The first few minutes were awkward.

We asked about ordinary things.

He asked about my work.

I told him what I did without going into much detail.

I asked where he lived now.

He gave me a general answer.

We spoke about how the area had changed.

We talked about the weather and the traffic.

I knew we were both delaying the conversation we had come to have.

But I did not want to force it too soon.

Eventually, he placed his cup on the saucer.

"I've thought about this meeting quite a bit," he said.

"So have I."

"I wasn't sure you would contact me."

I looked at him.

"Why not?"

He paused.

"Because I didn't know what you had been told."

I felt something tighten in my chest.

I had spent years wondering what he knew about me.

Now he was telling me that he had wondered about the story I had been given.

"What did you think I had been told?"

He looked toward the window.

"I thought you might believe that I had chosen to disappear."

I did not answer immediately.

That was exactly what I had believed.

For years, I had carried his absence as evidence that I had not mattered enough.

Hearing him say it aloud made the belief seem both smaller and more painful.

"That's what I believed," I said.

He closed his eyes for a moment.

When he opened them, he looked older than he had when he entered the café.

"I was afraid of that."

I wanted to ask why he had allowed it to happen.

I wanted to ask why he had not found a way to explain himself.

Instead, I tried to remain with the question I had come to ask.

"Did you try to contact me?"

He looked directly at me.

"Yes."

The answer was immediate.

I felt the room seem to shift around me.

I had imagined hearing that word many times.

I had also imagined hearing the opposite.

Now that it had been spoken, I did not know what to do with it.

"How?"

He took a breath.

"Not in the way I should have. Not enough, perhaps. But I did try."

I waited.

He explained that after contact between us stopped, he had attempted to find a way to speak with my mother.

He had wanted to understand what had happened.

He had also wanted to know whether he would still have a place in my life.

He did not give me a detailed timeline.

He said that the period had been difficult and that there had been disagreements about what should happen next.

I listened without interrupting.

"Did you ask to see me?"

"Yes."

"Did she say no?"

He looked down at his hands.

"She made it clear that she didn't want me coming into your life the way things were then."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"Did you believe that meant you should stay away?"

"At the time, I thought continuing to push would make things worse."

He paused.

"I was trying to avoid turning every attempt into another fight."

I studied his face.

I had expected him to say that he had been prevented from contacting me.

I had expected him to blame my mother.

Instead, he was describing a series of choices.

He had tried.

He had met resistance.

He had decided not to keep pushing.

That did not make the years of separation simple.

It did not erase the fact that he had been absent.

But it was different from the story I had believed.

"You knew I was growing up without you?"

He swallowed.

"I knew there was a chance that was happening."

"Did you know what I believed?"

"No."

His voice became quieter.

"I didn't know exactly what you had been told. I didn't want to assume."

I looked away.

Part of me wanted to accuse him of hiding behind uncertainty.

Another part recognized that I had done the same thing for years.

I had allowed my mother's explanations to stand because I had been afraid to ask anyone else.

He had allowed the separation to continue because he believed that pushing might make things worse.

Our reasons were not necessarily equal.

But both of us had lived with assumptions that neither of us had tested.

I looked back at him.

"Why didn't you find another way?"

He did not try to answer quickly.

"I should have looked harder," he said.

The admission surprised me.

He did not defend himself immediately.

He did not tell me that everything had been beyond his control.

He acknowledged that there were things he might have done differently.

"I told myself I was respecting the situation," he continued. "Some of that was true. Some of it was probably fear."

I felt my eyes beginning to sting.

I looked down at my coffee.

I had wanted an explanation.

I had not expected to hear someone admit that fear had helped keep the years of silence in place.

I understood fear.

I had been living with it for most of my life.

I knew how easily a person could convince themselves that doing nothing was the safest choice.

But understanding the reason did not make the consequences disappear.

"You know what it was like for me?" I asked.

He shook his head.

"No. I don't."

I appreciated that answer more than I would have appreciated a promise that he understood everything.

So I told him.

I told him that I had spent years wondering why he had left.

I told him that my mother had given me explanations, but they had never fully answered my questions.

I told him that whenever I tried to talk about him, the conversation ended.

I told him that I had learned to stop asking because I could not bear the arguments that followed.

I told him that seeing him beside the SUV had made me realize how much of my life I had built around an assumption I had never verified.

He listened.

He did not interrupt to correct me.

He did not tell me that my memories were wrong.

When I finished, he looked at the table for a long time.

"I'm sorry," he said.

I felt the familiar urge to make the conversation easier.

I wanted to tell him that he did not have to apologize.

I wanted to comfort him because he looked hurt.

But I stopped myself.

I had spent too many years managing other people's feelings before I had allowed myself to acknowledge my own.

So I simply nodded.

"Thank you for saying that."

He rubbed his hands together.

"I don't know whether I can explain everything in a way that will make sense to you."

"I don't expect you to explain everything today."

"There's a lot I don't know about what happened after we stopped seeing each other."

I looked at him.

"What do you mean?"

He said that he had not been present for the years of my life that followed.

He did not know exactly what my mother had told me.

He did not know what I had experienced at home.

He did not want to pretend that he could answer questions about things he had never witnessed.

I understood.

I had been seeking an account of his choices, not a complete explanation of my childhood.

Those were different matters.

"What do you remember about the decision?" I asked.

He was quiet for a while.

Then he said there had been disagreements between the adults involved.

He said he had wanted things to be different.

He had hoped there would be a way to remain present in my life without creating more conflict.

But he had also believed that the situation had become too difficult to manage through ordinary conversations.

I asked whether anyone had advised him to stop trying.

He nodded.

He did not explain every detail of that advice.

He said only that he had been told it might be better to give the situation time.

He had accepted that advice for longer than he should have.

I thought about my mother's words.

He wanted things to be different.

For the first time, I understood that the sentence might not have meant what I had initially imagined.

It could have meant that he wanted a different arrangement.

It could have meant that he wanted contact to continue under circumstances my mother did not accept.

It could have meant several things at once.

I still did not know the entire history.

But I finally had another person's account to compare with the one I had been given.

I looked at him.

"Did you ever stop wanting to hear from me?"

He answered without hesitation.

"No."

The simplicity of the answer hurt.

I looked toward the window.

Outside, people were walking past with their coats pulled close around them.

A bus stopped at the corner.

Someone hurried across the street before the traffic light changed.

The ordinary world continued while I tried to absorb what I had heard.

He had not stopped wanting to hear from me.

He had been uncertain about what he was allowed to do.

He had been afraid of making things worse.

And he had chosen to stay away.

Those facts could exist together.

They did not cancel one another out.

I could believe that he cared about me and still be hurt that he had not found another way.

I could understand his fear without agreeing that silence was the right answer.

For the first time, I felt able to hold those truths without forcing one to defeat the other.

We spoke for a while longer.

He asked what my life had been like.

I told him about the ordinary things first.

Work.

Places I had lived.

Changes I had made over the years.

I did not attempt to summarize my entire life for him.

There was no way to do that in one sitting.

He listened carefully.

Sometimes he asked a question.

Sometimes he seemed unsure whether he was allowed to ask at all.

I told him he could ask, and I would tell him what I felt comfortable sharing.

That seemed to ease some of the tension.

Eventually, we looked at the time.

Neither of us had realized how long we had been talking.

He asked whether I would be willing to meet again.

I considered the question.

Part of me wanted to say yes immediately.

Another part needed time to process what I had heard.

I did not want to turn the meeting into a promise that everything between us could be repaired.

"Yes," I said. "But I need to take this slowly."

He nodded.

"I understand."

We agreed to speak again after we had both had time to think.

He put on his coat.

I gathered my bag.

We walked toward the door together.

Outside, the air had grown cooler.

We stood on the pavement for a moment, neither of us quite sure how to say goodbye.

Then he looked at me.

"I'm glad you contacted me."

I believed him.

"I'm glad you answered," I said.

We went our separate ways.

I walked home slowly.

I did not feel as though everything had been solved.

I felt as though something important had finally become real.

For twenty years, I had imagined what he might say if I could ask him about the past.

Now I had heard some of his answers.

They were incomplete.

They were sometimes painful.

They also contained something I had not expected to receive.

An admission that he had made choices he regretted.

I could work with that.

I could ask more questions later.

I could compare his account with what my mother eventually chose to tell me.

I could decide what kind of relationship, if any, we might build from here.

I did not have to decide everything that afternoon.

For the first time in years, I was allowed to leave a conversation without pretending that it had ended the entire story.

I had heard his voice.

I had asked my questions.

And I had learned that the years of silence had meant something different to each of us.

That did not undo the past.

But it gave me a place to begin understanding it.

Click here to continue reading: PART 16: After Hearing His Side, I Could No Longer Pretend That One Person Alone Had Carried the Whole Story

I arrived at the café early.
