14 – His First Message Was Careful and Brief, but It Told Me He Had Not Forgotten Me

I read his email several times before answering.

I had expected to feel relieved when he replied.

Instead, I felt exposed.

Until that moment, I had been searching for someone who existed mostly in my memories.

Now I was writing to a real person who could read my words and decide how he felt about them.

That changed everything.

I returned to his question.

He wanted to know whether I was the person he thought I was.

I understood why.

My message had arrived unexpectedly.

He had no reason to trust that the person contacting him was the child he remembered.

I could not expect him to take that on faith.

So I answered carefully.

I mentioned a few ordinary details from the period when we had known each other.

I did not include anything deeply personal.

I did not want to prove my identity by revealing information that should not have been necessary.

I simply explained that I remembered him and that I had seen him beside the black SUV.

I described the street and the moment when our eyes met.

I wrote that I was not certain whether he had recognized me at the time.

Then I told him why I had reached out.

I had spent years believing that his absence meant he had chosen to leave my life.

Recently, I had begun questioning that belief.

I wanted to hear what he remembered.

I did not expect him to explain everything in one message.

I only wanted to know whether he would be willing to speak with me.

I read the reply one final time and sent it.

Then I put my phone away.

I made myself wait.

I went to work the next morning.

I spoke to a colleague about an ordinary task.

I completed the work I had promised to finish.

I ate lunch without checking my inbox.

When I returned home, I found no new message.

I felt a small wave of disappointment.

Then I reminded myself that I had asked him for a conversation, not an immediate answer.

He had his own life.

He might need time to remember.

He might need time to decide whether speaking to me was something he could manage.

I knew how difficult the past had become for both of us, although I still did not know what it had meant to him.

I did not want to turn my impatience into another person's obligation.

The following morning, I received another email.

This one was longer.

He thanked me for explaining who I was.

He said he had recognized the name, but he had not been sure whether the message was genuine.

He also confirmed that he had been the man beside the SUV.

I read that sentence several times.

There was no uncertainty left about the identity.

The person I had seen was the person I remembered.

He wrote that he had noticed someone across the street that evening.

He had wondered whether the person might be me, but he had not been certain.

He said that the years had changed the way he remembered faces.

He had not wanted to make a mistake.

I sat down.

He had seen me.

He had wondered whether it was me.

The moment I had replayed so many times had not existed only in my imagination.

I read the email again.

He did not explain why he had looked away.

He did not say he had been trying to avoid me.

He did not say he had wanted to approach me.

He simply explained that he had been unsure.

I appreciated that.

It was the first time in a long while that I had received an answer that did not pretend to be more certain than the person giving it could reasonably be.

He went on to say that he did remember me.

He remembered the years before contact stopped.

He remembered things about my childhood that I had nearly forgotten.

He did not list them in detail.

He only said that he had not erased that part of his life.

I stopped reading.

For several minutes, I sat still.

I had spent years wondering whether I had mattered enough to be remembered.

I had imagined that he might have forgotten my face, my voice, and the small things that had once connected us.

His email did not resolve every question.

But it answered that one.

He remembered me.

I did not know whether I wanted to laugh or cry.

Instead, I put the phone down and went to the kitchen for water.

I drank slowly.

Then I returned to the table and read the rest of the message.

He said that he was willing to speak with me.

He suggested meeting in a public place where we could talk without being rushed.

He offered a day the following week.

He also said that if I preferred not to meet, we could continue by email.

I appreciated that he had given me a choice.

For years, my decisions had felt shaped by other people's reactions.

Now I was being offered a chance to make one without pressure.

I looked at my calendar.

The proposed day was possible.

I checked my work commitments and made sure I could leave enough time.

Then I wrote back.

I accepted the invitation.

I asked whether a quiet café near the center of town would suit him.

I suggested a place I knew because it was public and easy to reach.

I explained that I did not want either of us to feel trapped in a conversation we could not comfortably leave.

I hesitated before sending that sentence.

It sounded overly cautious.

But it was true.

I wanted us both to be able to speak honestly.

That required a setting in which either of us could pause, take a breath, or end the conversation if it became too difficult.

I sent the email.

He replied later that afternoon.

The café would be fine.

We agreed on a time.

I added the details to my calendar and closed the message.

The meeting was now arranged.

I should have felt happy.

Instead, I felt nervous in a way that reminded me of childhood.

I had spent so much time imagining what I would say that I had not thought enough about what it would feel like to sit across from him.

What if I could not find my voice?

What if he answered a question in a way I did not expect?

What if I felt more connected to him than I had prepared for?

What if I discovered that the memories I had carried were incomplete or wrong?

I could not plan for every possibility.

I needed to let the meeting happen.

Over the next several days, I prepared without turning the preparation into a performance.

I reread the notes I had made.

I selected a small number of questions.

I did not bring every memory or every suspicion.

I wanted to leave room for a real conversation.

I also wrote down the things I did not want to do.

I did not want to accuse him before hearing his account.

I did not want to treat his financial success as evidence of happiness or indifference.

I did not want to assume that he had been free to make every choice during the years when he was absent.

I did not want to hide the pain his absence had caused me.

The last point mattered.

Being fair to him did not require me to minimize my own experience.

I could tell him that I had spent years wondering why he was gone.

I could tell him that my mother's explanations had never fully answered my questions.

I could tell him that seeing him again had unsettled everything I thought I had understood.

I did not need to apologize for those feelings.

They were part of my life.

I wrote the questions on one page.

Then I put the page away.

I did not want to spend every night rehearsing the meeting.

I needed to arrive as myself, not as someone who had memorized a script.

The day before we were due to meet, my mother called.

She sounded calmer than she had during our recent conversations.

We spoke about an ordinary matter first.

Then she asked whether anything had changed.

I knew what she meant.

I told her that I had managed to contact him.

She went quiet.

"Have you spoken to him?"

"Only by email."

"What did he say?"

I hesitated.

I did not want to tell her everything before I had heard him in person.

But I also did not want to behave as though I were hiding information from her to punish her.

"He remembers me," I said.

My mother said nothing.

"He has agreed to meet me."

I heard a soft breath on the other end.

Then she asked when.

I told her the day.

She asked where we would meet.

I gave her the name of the café.

She was quiet for a while.

Then she said that she hoped I knew what I was doing.

I told her I was trying to be careful.

She asked whether I believed him.

I thought about the question.

"I believe that he remembers me," I said. "I don't yet know what happened between us."

My mother did not answer.

I continued.

"That's why I'm going to listen."

She said that she did not want me to get hurt.

I believed her.

"I don't want that either."

We spoke for another minute.

Then she told me she had to go.

I said goodbye.

After the call, I felt a mixture of sadness and anticipation.

My mother knew that I was going to meet him.

She had not asked me to cancel.

She had not offered to explain what had happened.

She had simply expressed her concern.

I could not tell what that meant.

I refused to turn her silence into an answer.

That evening, I laid out the clothes I planned to wear.

I chose something comfortable.

I did not want to feel as though I were attending an interview or presenting a case.

I wanted to be able to sit across from him and speak plainly.

Before going to bed, I reread his emails one last time.

He had confirmed that he remembered me.

He had agreed to meet.

He had not yet explained why contact had stopped.

Those were the facts.

Everything else would have to wait.

I turned off the light.

I was afraid of the conversation.

I was also grateful that it was going to happen.

For the first time since I had seen the black SUV, I did not have to imagine every possible outcome alone.

A real conversation was ahead of me.

I could not know what it would bring.

But I could show up and listen.

That was enough for the night.
