I can't promise you that I remember every detail, but I remember the name, and I remember seeing him around your family."

My heart began beating faster.

For weeks, I had been trying to find a reliable way to contact him.

Now someone had given me something concrete enough to examine.

I asked whether she could read the name to me.

She did.

I wrote it down carefully.

I asked her to spell it, then repeated it back to make sure I had understood.

There was no address beside it.

There was no telephone number.

The program was old enough that the contact details, even if they had existed, would probably no longer be useful.

But I finally had a name I could connect to the memories I had carried for so long.

I thanked her.

She said she hoped it would help.

Then she became quiet for a moment.

"There was something else," she said.

I waited.

She explained that she remembered him being involved in a community gathering during the period when I was younger.

She did not remember the exact date.

She did not know whether the gathering had anything to do with my family.

She only remembered that he had been there and that my mother had seemed uncomfortable afterward.

I asked what she meant by uncomfortable.

My neighbor said she could not describe it clearly.

She remembered a conversation ending when someone approached.

She remembered my mother changing the subject.

She remembered very little beyond that.

"I don't want to make it sound like I know something I don't," she said.

I appreciated that.

"Neither do I," I replied.

I explained that I was trying to establish what had actually happened, not collect reasons to blame someone.

She said she understood.

We spoke for a few more minutes.

Before we ended the call, she told me that she still had the old program and could send me a photograph of the page if I wanted to keep a copy.

I said that would be helpful.

A little later, the image arrived.

I opened it on my phone.

The paper looked old, and some of the printing had faded.

Several names were arranged in a column.

The name she had read to me appeared near the bottom.

There was nothing else beside it that clearly connected him to me.

No family relationship was listed.

No personal message appeared in the margin.

It was simply a name printed in an old community program.

I studied it for a while.

I had imagined that the first solid information I found would bring a sudden feeling of recognition or relief.

Instead, I felt cautious.

A name could be a beginning without being an answer.

I saved the image and wrote the source of the information in my notebook.

I recorded that my former neighbor had identified the name.

I noted that she believed it belonged to the man I had seen.

I also recorded that her memory was not complete.

I wanted to preserve the information without making it stronger than it was.

Then I began looking for public information that might help me establish whether the name belonged to the same person.

I did not search for private records.

I did not try to uncover his home address or personal telephone number.

I was looking for a legitimate way to send a message.

The first results were unhelpful.

Several people shared the same name.

Some had no public information beyond an old directory listing.

Others were clearly different people.

I closed those pages rather than trying to connect them to him without evidence.

I needed something that matched the person I remembered, not merely someone who shared a name.

I returned to the old community program.

It identified the gathering's organizer.

That gave me another place to begin.

I looked for public information about the event and the organization that had arranged it.

The organization had changed over time, but some of its public material was still available.

One page mentioned a past committee.

The names listed there included the name I had written in my notebook.

I read the page slowly.

It was not enough to prove that the person listed was the man I had seen.

But the associated dates were consistent with the period my neighbor remembered.

I kept looking.

Eventually, I found a professional page that appeared to belong to someone with the same name.

It included a current photograph.

I opened it.

Then I sat back.

The image was not identical to what I remembered from the street.

The years had changed his appearance, and the photograph had been taken under different lighting.

But the eyes were familiar.

So was the shape of his jaw.

I compared it with the memory I had carried since that night beside the black SUV.

I did not need to convince myself that the resemblance was there.

I recognized him.

Still, I took a breath before moving forward.

I reminded myself that recognition was a reason to make a careful inquiry, not permission to demand his attention.

The page included a public contact form.

It did not display a private home address or personal number.

I decided that the most respectful approach would be to send a short message explaining who I was and asking whether he was willing to speak.

I returned to the draft I had written after our last conversation.

The message looked different now.

Before, I had been writing to someone I might never be able to identify.

Now I was writing to a person whose public profile appeared to match the man I had seen.

That made the message feel more real.

It also made me more nervous.

I read every sentence.

I removed anything that sounded like an accusation.

I made sure I did not claim to know why he had disappeared from my life.

I did not mention my mother's recent admission.

I did not include the old photograph or the details of my search.

Those things could wait until a conversation, if he agreed to have one.

I wanted to make it easy for him to understand my purpose without feeling that I had already judged him.

The message was simple.

I told him that I believed I had seen him recently.

I explained that I remembered him from my childhood and had spent years wondering what had happened between us.

I said that I was trying to understand the past and would appreciate the opportunity to speak.

I also made it clear that I understood he might not wish to respond.

I read the message one final time.

Then I sent it.

For a few seconds, I stared at the screen.

Nothing happened.

There was no immediate answer.

The page returned to its ordinary appearance, and the message disappeared from the form.

I set my phone down.

I felt as though I had just said something important in a room where nobody else was present.

I had reached out.

That was all I could control.

I went back to the kitchen and finished making dinner.

I ate at the table.

I washed the dishes.

I answered a message about work.

I tried to keep the rest of the evening ordinary.

But every so often, I thought about the message.

What if I had the wrong person?

What if he never saw it?

What if he recognized my name and decided that he wanted nothing to do with me?

I had spent years imagining possible answers.

Now I was learning what it felt like to wait for an actual one.

The following morning, I checked the public page.

There was no response.

I did not send another message.

I went to work and left my phone in my bag during a meeting.

At lunchtime, I checked again.

Nothing.

I told myself that people did not always respond immediately to unexpected messages.

He might not check that contact form regularly.

He might need time to decide whether to answer.

He might choose not to answer at all.

I could not know.

That evening, my mother called.

She wanted to ask whether I had managed to sort out a small matter she had mentioned earlier in the week.

I told her I had.

We spoke about it for several minutes.

Then she asked how I was doing.

I hesitated.

She had asked the question many times before.

Usually, it was part of an ordinary conversation.

This time, I wondered whether she was waiting to hear whether I had continued my search.

"I'm all right," I said.

She asked whether I was still thinking about the past.

I decided not to lie.

"Yes."

She sighed.

I could hear the disappointment in her voice.

"I thought we were getting somewhere," she said.

I wondered what she meant by somewhere.

Had she hoped I would stop asking?

Had she hoped our conversations would return to normal?

I could not know.

"I want us to be all right," I told her.

"Then why can't you leave this alone?"

I took a breath.

"Because I still don't know what happened."

She said that some things could not be changed.

I agreed.

I was not trying to change the past.

I was trying to understand it.

I explained that the years were gone, and no conversation could bring them back.

But I still had a right to know what had happened during them.

My mother did not respond.

After a moment, she said she had to go.

I told her goodbye.

I was disappointed, but I did not call her back to make the conversation easier.

I had said what I meant.

I could not force her to agree.

Two days passed.

Then three.

I continued working and tried not to organize my life around the possibility of receiving a reply.

I did not check the public page every hour.

I did not return to the street.

I had taken a step.

Now I needed to give the other person room to decide what he wanted to do with it.

On the fourth evening, I received an email.

The subject line was brief.

It contained only my name.

I stared at it before opening it.

My hands had become cold.

The message was short.

The sender said that he had received my inquiry and wanted to confirm that I was the person he thought I was.

He asked me to reply with a little information about the period we had known each other.

He did not ask for private documents.

He did not demand that I explain my entire life.

He simply wanted to make sure the message had reached the right person.

I read it twice.

Then I closed my eyes.

For the first time in twenty years, the possibility of a conversation was no longer something I had to imagine.

It was real.

But I still needed to be careful.

I could not assume that an email meant he was ready to answer every question.

I could not assume that recognition would make the years disappear.

And I could not assume that we would agree about what had happened.

I opened my notebook.

I wrote down the date and the basic facts of the message.

Then I began preparing my reply.

I wanted it to be honest.

I wanted it to be calm.

Most of all, I wanted to give him enough information to know that I was the person he remembered.

I had waited a long time to reach this point.

I did not intend to waste the opportunity by pretending I had no fear.

But I would not let fear make the decision for me either.
