9 – The Reply to My Old Inquiry Was Modest, but It Finally Gave Me Somewhere Concrete to Begin

I checked my phone the next morning before I had even finished making coffee.

There was no new message.

I put the phone down and opened the kitchen cupboard.

For the first time in days, I laughed at myself.

I had spent years waiting for answers from people who did not want to give them, and now I was waiting for an ordinary reply from someone who had never met me.

The difference was that this person had no reason to make me feel guilty for asking.

I finished breakfast before checking again.

There was still nothing.

I went to work and tried to concentrate on the tasks in front of me.

I managed well enough until lunchtime, when I found myself thinking about the old card again.

I could still picture it inside the book.

The edges had been worn smooth, and the printed address had faded slightly.

I remembered how little importance I had attached to it when I first found it.

It had survived years of moving and sorting because I had never considered it worth throwing away.

Now it was the only object in my childhood belongings that had given me a possible lead.

I did not want to exaggerate its importance.

It might amount to nothing.

Still, I wanted to know why my mother had once mentioned the place and then told me we would not be going there anymore.

That was a memory worth examining, even if the answer turned out to be ordinary.

In the afternoon, I received a message.

The person who had acknowledged my inquiry had checked the information available to them.

The organization named on my card had once used the address printed there, but its operations had changed over the years.

They could not tell me whether anyone connected to my family had visited.

They did not keep personal records from that period, and they were careful not to suggest otherwise.

However, they gave me the name of a local archive where old public newsletters and community publications might still be available.

I read the message twice.

It was not the breakthrough I had imagined.

There was no confirmation that the man had ever been there.

There was no explanation of my mother's behavior.

There was no hidden record waiting to reveal everything.

There was simply a place where I might learn something about the years I was trying to understand.

I thanked the person who had replied.

Then I copied the archive's details into my notebook.

I felt grateful that someone had taken the time to answer me, even though the answer was limited.

For so long, my questions had met silence or irritation.

An ordinary, respectful response reminded me that uncertainty did not have to be frightening.

Sometimes it was just the beginning of a search.

I finished work and looked up the archive's opening hours.

It was in a public building not far from the center of town.

I could visit without making special arrangements.

I decided to go the following afternoon.

That evening, I took the old card out of its folder again.

I placed it beside my notebook and studied the printed name.

I tried to remember the place more clearly.

I remembered my mother mentioning it in a conversation that seemed to have taken place around the time I was still young enough to depend on her for nearly everything.

I remembered her putting the card away.

I remembered being told that we would not be going there again.

But I could not recall who else had been involved.

Perhaps the place had been connected to an ordinary activity that ended when our circumstances changed.

Perhaps the visit had been important to my mother for reasons I did not understand.

Perhaps it had nothing to do with the man at all.

I wrote those possibilities down without choosing between them.

That was becoming easier.

It was also becoming more necessary.

If I wanted to understand what had happened, I could not keep turning every uncertain detail into a piece of a single, predetermined story.

I needed to let the evidence lead me, even when it led nowhere.

The next afternoon, I went to the archive.

The building was quieter than I expected.

People sat at tables with papers spread in front of them, and a librarian spoke softly to someone near the entrance.

A notice explained how to request older materials.

I waited until the desk was free.

Then I explained that I had found an old card and wanted to see whether the archive held public newsletters from the years when the organization had used the address.

The librarian asked whether I knew the approximate dates.

I said I could only estimate.

She told me that was a reasonable place to start, but the collection might not be complete.

I understood.

I gave her the name from the card.

She wrote it down and checked the catalogue.

After a few minutes, she returned with a small stack of reference folders.

They contained old public documents.

Some were newsletters.

Others were event notices and printed announcements.

The paper was thin and slightly brittle.

A few pages had yellowed at the edges.

I began going through them carefully.

I did not expect to find my own name.

I did not even know whether the organization had ever recorded individual visits in anything that remained available to the public.

I was looking for something much smaller.

A date.

A reference to a meeting.

A familiar name.

Anything that might help me place the card in time.

Most of the pages were unhelpful.

They listed community events, fundraising activities, and announcements about changes in local services.

I read through them anyway.

There was value in knowing what the place had been and what it had offered.

It helped me imagine the surroundings without pretending I knew what had happened inside them.

I found one newsletter that mentioned the organization working with families during periods of difficult change.

The wording was broad.

It did not identify individual families or describe private cases.

I paused over the paragraph.

Then I reminded myself that the organization had probably helped many people.

The fact that my mother had known about it did not establish why she had gone there.

I kept reading.

A few pages later, I found a photograph from a public community event.

It showed a group of people standing in front of a table covered with boxes and paper decorations.

The image was grainy.

The caption named the occasion but did not identify every person in the photograph.

I studied the faces without expecting much.

Then I stopped.

Near the back of the group stood a woman whose posture seemed familiar.

I leaned closer.

I could not tell whether it was my mother.

The photograph was too unclear, and the woman was partly turned away.

For several seconds, I considered asking the librarian whether a larger copy existed.

Then I noticed that I was holding my breath.

I set the page down and breathed normally.

There was no reason to turn a resemblance into a discovery.

I looked at the photograph again.

The woman might have been my mother.

She might have been someone else.

I could not be certain.

I checked the caption for a date.

The event had taken place around the broad period I had been trying to reconstruct.

That was interesting, but it was not proof of a connection to the man.

I copied the publication's title and date into my notebook.

I also recorded the page number and the exact wording of the caption.

I did not write that I had found my mother.

I wrote that I had found a photograph that might warrant closer examination.

That distinction mattered.

A few pages later, I found a public announcement about a change in the organization's location.

The address on my card had been used for a period, then replaced by another.

The announcement listed the date of the move.

I compared it with the approximate period I remembered.

The timing was close enough to interest me, but not close enough to establish anything about my family.

I wrote it down.

Then I returned the folders to the desk.

The librarian asked whether I had found what I needed.

I told her that I had found a few dates and a photograph, but nothing conclusive.

She nodded.

She did not press me for details.

I thanked her for the help.

Before leaving, I asked whether the archive held any more material from the same organization.

She explained what was available and what had not survived.

There were gaps in the collection.

Some records had never been transferred.

Others had been discarded under ordinary retention policies.

She did not pretend that more searching would necessarily produce an answer.

I appreciated her honesty.

Outside, the afternoon air felt warmer than it had when I entered.

I sat on a bench near the entrance and opened my notebook.

I reviewed what I had learned.

The organization had existed.

It had used the address on the card.

It had worked with families.

It had moved during the general period I was trying to understand.

And an old public photograph might or might not contain my mother.

Those were the facts.

Everything beyond them remained uncertain.

I was tempted to feel disappointed.

I had hoped that the archive would give me something solid enough to change the direction of my search.

Instead, it had given me a few dates and a photograph that might be irrelevant.

But the visit had not been wasted.

I had found out that the card was real and that its printed details belonged to an actual place.

I had learned how to ask for records without expecting people to reveal private information.

And I had discovered that I could examine an uncertain clue without forcing it to support the answer I wanted.

That was progress of a quieter kind.

On the way home, I stopped at a shop and bought a simple folder.

I wanted to keep the old card, the notes from the archive, and my earlier observations together.

When I arrived home, I placed them inside.

The envelope with the unsigned note remained in its own clear sleeve.

I did not want to mix it with documents whose dates and origins were different.

For all I knew, the note might have nothing to do with the mystery.

It deserved to be treated as carefully as the other items, not because it was important, but because I did not yet know whether it was.

That night, I called my mother.

I had been considering whether to tell her about the archive.

Part of me thought that being open with her might encourage her to speak.

Another part worried that she would use the information as a reason to argue that I was becoming obsessed.

I decided not to hide what I had done, but I would not present it as evidence against her.

When she answered, I asked whether she had time to talk.

She said she did.

I told her I had visited a local archive and found public material related to the place named on the old card.

She did not interrupt.

I explained that I had not found a direct answer.

I told her that the records were incomplete and that I did not know whether the place had any connection to the man.

When I finished, she was quiet.

Then she asked me why I was telling her.

I had prepared for that question.

"Because I don't want to turn this into something secret between us," I said. "I'm trying to understand what happened."

She said I was making it impossible for us to have an ordinary relationship.

I felt the familiar sadness.

I wanted an ordinary relationship too.

I wanted to talk to her about daily life without feeling that a forbidden subject was sitting between us.

But it was already there.

I had not created it by asking about it.

"I want us to be able to talk about ordinary things," I said. "I don't want every conversation to become an argument."

"Then leave the past alone."

I closed my eyes.

I had heard those words too many times to mistake them for a new answer.

"I can't promise that."

She let out a slow breath.

For a moment, I thought she might end the call.

Instead, she asked what I expected to find.

I told her the truth.

"I don't know."

That answer surprised both of us.

For years, I had approached my mother with a list of questions that I thought should have obvious answers.

I had believed that if I could ask them correctly, she would eventually tell me what I needed to know.

Now I understood that the search might lead somewhere I could not predict.

I might find an explanation.

I might find a contradiction.

I might discover that some of my memories were wrong.

I might never understand every decision that had been made.

I could not tell her what the outcome would be because I did not know.

"I'm trying to find out what I can," I said.

She did not answer.

I waited.

Eventually, she told me that she was tired and wanted to end the conversation.

I said goodnight.

Afterward, I sat at the table and looked at the folder.

The archive had not solved anything.

My mother's response had not changed.

The man remained somewhere beyond my reach.

Still, I felt different from the person who had stood across the street watching the SUV disappear.

Back then, I had believed that seeing him was a chance I might never receive again.

Now I understood that even if I never saw him a second time, I could continue learning what I was able to learn.

The work did not depend entirely on chance.

It depended on what I chose to do with the information I already had.

I turned to a fresh page in my notebook.

At the top, I wrote the date of my visit to the archive.

Below it, I recorded the facts.

Then I wrote one sentence about the photograph.

I could not yet identify the woman.

I left the sentence exactly as it was.

I was learning to live with an unfinished answer.

And for the first time, that did not feel the same as giving up.

Click here to continue reading: PART 10: When I Showed My Mother the Photograph, She
