7 – I Finally Understood That Finding Him Was Only Half the Work, Because I Also Had to Be Ready to Hear His Side

The following week, I made a decision that had less to do with courage than with practicality.

I needed to organize what I knew.

For days, my thoughts had been moving in circles.

I would remember something, connect it to another detail, then realize that I had no proof that the two belonged together.

I would imagine what might have happened and then have to remind myself that imagination was not evidence.

I was tired of feeling as though every unanswered question was a door I had to open immediately.

So I cleared my desk.

I brought out the notebook, the folder containing the old note, and the photographs I had set aside.

Then I divided a fresh page into three sections.

What I knew.

What I remembered.

What I needed to ask.

The first section was surprisingly short.

I knew that I had seen the man beside the black SUV.

I knew that I recognized his face.

I knew that my mother had reacted strongly when I told her.

I knew that she had refused to discuss whether he had tried to contact me.

And I knew that she had recently acknowledged she was not ready to explain what happened.

Everything else belonged somewhere else.

The second section was longer.

It contained memories of conversations, rooms, warnings, and moments when I had felt that something important was being kept from me.

Some of those memories were vivid.

Others were uncertain.

I marked the uncertain ones clearly.

I did not want to confuse a feeling with a fact.

The final section contained the questions I wanted to ask him if I ever had the opportunity.

Had he tried to contact me?

What had he been told about my life?

Did he know that I had spent years believing he had chosen to leave?

Was there something he had wanted me to understand?

And why had my mother been so determined to keep his name out of our conversations?

I looked at the list.

The questions were direct.

They were also difficult.

I could not assume that he would answer all of them.

I could not assume he would agree with my memories.

I could not assume that his version would be complete or uncomplicated.

He was a person with his own history.

He might have carried his own misunderstandings.

He might have made mistakes.

He might have believed things that were not true.

If I approached him expecting a perfect explanation, I would be setting myself up for another disappointment.

I needed to leave room for the possibility that the truth would be untidy.

That did not make it less worth finding.

It simply meant I had to approach it differently.

I read through the questions again.

Then I crossed out one.

It had been phrased as an accusation.

I rewrote it as a question about what he remembered.

That small change mattered.

I did not want the first conversation between us, if it ever happened, to be a trial.

I wanted to learn what he knew.

I wanted him to have a chance to speak.

And I wanted to be able to listen without abandoning my own judgment.

Those aims were not always easy to balance.

I had spent so long protecting myself from the possibility that he had left willingly that I had begun to imagine the opposite.

Perhaps he had been prevented from contacting me.

Perhaps he had been told to stay away.

Perhaps there were reasons beyond his control.

Those possibilities offered comfort.

They also tempted me to reach a conclusion before I had heard a word from him.

I had to be careful.

A hopeful explanation was still only an explanation.

I could not replace my mother's certainty with my own.

For several days, I focused on what might allow me to identify him more reliably.

I returned in my mind to the building where I had seen him.

I remembered the glass entrance and the security desk.

I remembered the café around the corner.

I remembered the direction in which the SUV had driven.

Those details were ordinary.

They were not enough to identify him.

But they gave me a place to begin.

I searched through the information I already had, looking for any old address or document that might connect him to a place or an organization.

I did not have access to his private records, and I was not going to obtain them improperly.

I was looking through my own belongings.

I wanted to know whether there was a detail I had overlooked.

I examined the old photographs again.

I checked the backs.

I looked at the edges of the envelopes.

I read the note one more time.

Nothing gave me a name.

At one point, I found myself wishing that my childhood had contained a simple written record of everything I had forgotten.

An address.

A telephone number.

A letter signed at the bottom.

Something I could hold without having to wonder what it meant.

But life did not work that way.

People lost things.

Families kept secrets.

Children remembered fragments.

And years passed.

I could not change any of that.

I could only decide how honestly I would handle the information I had.

One evening, I began thinking about the last time I had seen him before he disappeared from my life.

The memory was not as clear as I wanted it to be.

I remembered the setting only in pieces.

I remembered an ordinary day becoming uncomfortable.

I remembered wanting someone to explain what was happening.

Most of all, I remembered the feeling of being left out of a decision that would change my life.

I could not say exactly what had been spoken.

I could not be sure who had been present at every moment.

The more I tried to reconstruct the scene, the more I worried that I was filling the gaps with details from other memories.

So I stopped.

I put down the pen.

I let the memory remain incomplete.

That was difficult because I wanted something firm to hold on to.

But the fact that I could not remember everything did not make the things I did remember meaningless.

It meant I had reached the limit of what memory alone could tell me.

I needed another person's account.

That was another reason to find him.

Not to prove that my mother was wrong.

Not to prove that I had been abandoned.

Not to prove that he had been prevented from returning.

I needed to know what had actually happened, as far as we could establish it.

A few nights later, I dreamed about the street.

In the dream, I crossed toward the SUV and called out to him.

He turned immediately.

He knew who I was.

He looked relieved to see me.

Then I woke up.

For a few seconds, I lay still, caught between the feeling of the dream and the reality of my bedroom.

I hated how quickly my mind had created the encounter I wanted.

In the dream, I had been given recognition without having to ask for it.

I had been given relief without having to earn it.

The truth might not be so generous.

He might recognize me and still have difficulty speaking.

He might not know what to say.

He might want to explain himself before listening to my questions.

He might even decide that he did not want contact.

I could not control any of that.

What I could control was whether I remained prepared to hear him.

I got out of bed and made a cup of tea.

Then I stood by the kitchen window until the sky began to brighten.

I thought about what I would do if he refused to speak.

I would be hurt.

I would need time to process it.

But I would not allow that refusal to determine the worth of the next twenty years of my life.

I had already lost enough time to questions I was afraid to ask.

I could grieve an answer without allowing it to become another prison.

That thought stayed with me throughout the day.

When my mother called that afternoon, I answered.

We talked for several minutes.

Her voice sounded more natural than it had during our recent conversations.

She told me about something that had happened with a neighbor.

I listened.

I asked a few ordinary questions.

Then she said she missed the way things used to be between us.

I felt a familiar ache.

I missed parts of it too.

I missed being able to call her without wondering whether every ordinary sentence concealed a warning.

I missed feeling that we could disagree without losing each other.

I missed believing that love meant we could tell each other difficult things.

But I could not return to the old arrangement merely because we were both tired.

"I miss being close to you too," I said.

She was quiet.

"Then why are you doing this?"

I took a breath.

"Because I don't understand what happened, and I can't keep pretending that I do."

She said that she had never wanted to hurt me.

I believed that she might mean it.

"I hear you," I said.

There was a pause.

Then I added, "But I still need answers."

She did not respond immediately.

For a moment, I hoped she might offer something new.

Instead, she said we had already discussed the matter enough.

I felt the old disappointment settle over me.

But it no longer carried the same power.

I did not need to convince her that my questions were reasonable.

I did not need her agreement before I could continue looking.

We ended the call politely.

Afterward, I sat at the desk and looked at the three sections in my notebook.

I felt sad for the relationship my mother and I might have had if difficult subjects had been easier to discuss.

I also felt a new kind of respect for myself.

I had acknowledged that I loved her.

I had acknowledged that I wanted to remain close to her.

And I had refused to treat those feelings as reasons to abandon my own questions.

That was progress.

Not the kind that showed up in a photograph.

Not the kind anyone else would necessarily notice.

But it was real.

The next morning, I decided to make another attempt to find the man.

This time, I would not simply return to the street and hope he appeared.

I would look for a legitimate way to identify the place where I had seen him and determine whether there was a public contact route that might allow me to make an inquiry.

I would not ask anyone to disclose private information.

I would not follow him or try to force a meeting.

I wanted the chance to make contact respectfully.

If I eventually found a way to reach him, I would introduce myself.

I would tell him that I had seen him.

I would tell him I had questions about the past.

And I would give him the freedom to decide whether he wanted to respond.

That last part was important.

I had spent years being denied choices.

I did not want to answer that experience by taking choices away from someone else.

I wanted an honest conversation, not a confrontation he had no opportunity to refuse.

I wrote those intentions at the top of a new page.

Then I underlined the first sentence.

I would ask.

I would listen.

I would not decide the truth before I heard it.

It was a simple plan.

It did not promise me the reunion I sometimes imagined.

It did not promise forgiveness or an explanation.

But it offered something I had not allowed myself to seek before.

A chance.

I closed the notebook.

For the first time, I felt prepared to meet the man as he was, rather than as the person I had spent twenty years imagining.

Click here to continue reading: PART 8: When I Finally Stopped Searching for the Answer I Wanted, I Found a Way to
